Chapter 23 - Chapter 22 — The Thunder Tournament

Three days after the strategy lecture, the academy courtyard buzzed with rumors.

Students whispered across training fields.

Dorm hallways were louder than usual.

Even the instructors seemed unusually busy preparing something.

Daigo leaned across the dining table dramatically.

"I heard it's happening."

Akari didn't look up from tying a new bowstring.

"You say that every week."

"No seriously."

Daigo lowered his voice.

"The Thunder Tournament."

That got Raizen's attention.

He had heard the name before in the academy library.

A competition held only a few times each year.

The Announcement

By midmorning all academy students had gathered in the central training valley.

Five classes stood in organized rows beneath the mountain cliffs.

Instructor Hayate stepped forward.

"The Kumogakure Academy forges strength through challenge."

His voice echoed across the stone walls of the valley.

"Today we announce the beginning of the Thunder Tournament."

Excited murmurs erupted across the gathered students.

Hayate raised a hand for silence.

"This tournament will test three aspects of shinobi development."

He raised three fingers.

"Individual combat."

"Team coordination."

"And tactical intelligence."

Akari folded her arms thoughtfully.

"That actually sounds interesting."

Daigo cracked his knuckles.

"Finally."

Tournament Structure

Instructor Tetsuya stepped forward holding a scroll.

"The tournament will take place over several weeks."

He unrolled the scroll revealing dozens of names.

"Matches will rotate between students from different classes."

A few groans appeared immediately.

"Meaning you will fight people you rarely train with."

Tetsuya nodded.

"Correct."

"Unknown opponents force adaptation."

Raizen understood the reasoning immediately.

A shinobi rarely chose their enemies.

The Reputation Board

Later that afternoon students gathered around a newly installed wooden board near the arena.

Names were listed in columns.

Wins.

Losses.

Performance rankings.

Daigo pointed excitedly.

"Look!"

"They're tracking everything… publicly."

Akari studied the board carefully.

"This isn't just a tournament."

"It's a reputation system."

Students who performed well would gain recognition among instructors.

Future elite candidates would begin separating themselves from the rest.

Raizen glanced at the board briefly.

Then walked toward the training grounds instead.

Training Before the Storm

Most students spent the afternoon preparing.

Some practiced taijutsu combinations.

Others sparred intensely with wooden weapons.

Akari focused on rapid archery drills, releasing arrows faster with each repetition.

Daigo worked on movement speed, trying to chain his momentum attacks together smoothly.

Raizen trained differently.

He stood near the edge of the field, practicing controlled chakra flow through his body.

Lightning chakra flickered faintly along his fingertips—controlled, contained, waiting.

Not a jutsu.

Just control.

Understanding the flow of energy.

Quiet Observation

From the balcony above the training field several instructors watched.

Hayate folded his arms.

"That one again."

Tetsuya nodded.

"Raizen Tenrai."

Hayate glanced down at the field.

"He doesn't rush."

Tetsuya smiled faintly.

"Storms rarely do."

First Match Pairings

By evening the first match list appeared on the reputation board.

Students crowded around immediately.

Daigo forced his way through the crowd.

"Move!"

"Important person coming through."

Akari sighed and followed behind him.

Raizen arrived moments later.

Daigo scanned the board quickly.

"Okay…"

"Okay…"

"Ah!"

He pointed dramatically.

"My first opponent is… someone named Hoshi."

Akari found her name next.

"Mine too."

Raizen quietly scanned the board.

His name appeared halfway down the list.

Opponent: Renji Kuroda

Akari glanced over his shoulder.

"You know him?"

Raizen shook his head.

"No."

Daigo grinned.

"Perfect."

"First mystery opponent."

Night Before the Match

That evening the dormitory felt unusually tense.

Students discussed strategies.

Some practiced movements even inside the hallways.

Others sat quietly reviewing academy lessons.

Daigo paced back and forth across the dorm room.

"What if he's huge?"

Akari didn't even look up from cleaning her bow.

"Then aim higher."

Raizen sat quietly near the window.

Outside the storm clouds rolled slowly across the mountains.

Competitions were useful.

They revealed weaknesses.

But Raizen wasn't focused on winning.

He was focused on learning.

Astra's Question

Inside his mind Astra spoke calmly.

"User emotional state stable."

Raizen nodded slightly.

"Just another lesson."

"Query: do you intend to win?"

Raizen looked toward the storm clouds.

"If possible."

"But understanding matters more."

Quiet Ending

The academy slowly fell silent as students returned to their dormitories.

Tomorrow the arena would come alive.

Students would test their skills.

Reputations would begin forming.

And somewhere within those matches…

The future leaders of the next generation would start to reveal themselves.

Raizen closed his eyes.

Storms didn't rush.

But when they arrived… no one could ignore them.
