Chapter 32 - Chapter 30 - The Strategist

The academy bell rang across the terraced courtyards of Kumogakure.

Students moved through stone corridors, many still talking about the previous day's matches.

Others carried weapons and scrolls toward their morning classes.

The Challenger Tournament did not stop the academy from functioning.

If anything— it made every lesson more important.

Classroom Theory

Inside one of the academy's upper lecture halls, Instructor Hoshin stood before a large chalkboard.

Dozens of students filled the tiered seating.

Raizen sat near the center with Daigo and Akari.

Hoshin tapped the board once.

Three words were written there.

Speed.

Power.

Control.

"Most young shinobi think combat is about strength." the instructor said calmly.

"That is wrong."

He circled the three words.

"These are the three pillars of effective combat."

Several students leaned forward.

Hoshin pointed to the first word.

"Speed."

He glanced toward Ren Sōma sitting several rows away.

"A fast shinobi controls distance."

Then he tapped the second word.

"Power."

His eyes shifted briefly toward Daigo Mizuta.

"Strength breaks defenses."

Finally he tapped the third word.

"Control."

His gaze landed on Raizen.

"Control wins wars."

The class remained quiet.

Hoshin continued.

"Control is the ability to manage timing, space, chakra, and decision-making under pressure."

He faced the class.

"This is why we hold tournaments."

"To reveal which pillar each of you relies on."

He paused.

"And which pillar you lack."

Daigo leaned toward Raizen and whispered.

"I'm pretty sure he was talking about you."

Raizen shrugged slightly.

Akari didn't speak.

She was staring at the board thoughtfully.

A Strategist's Mind

After class ended, students spilled out into the academy courtyard.

Training fields stretched between stone towers and mountain ledges.

Groups practiced taijutsu drills.

Others threw kunai at wooden targets.

Daigo stretched his arms.

"Alright," he said.

"I'm going to the sparring yard."

He pointed at Raizen.

"You coming?"

Raizen shook his head.

"Later."

Daigo grinned.

"Don't study too hard."

He jogged off.

Raizen turned toward Akari.

"You're quiet."

Akari crossed her arms.

"I've been thinking."

"About your match?"

She nodded once.

"Yes."

Raizen studied her expression.

"You already chose your opponent."

"Yes."

She gestured toward the arena visible across the academy grounds.

"An elite class leader."

Raizen raised an eyebrow slightly.

"That's ambitious."

Akari smirked faintly.

"No."

She tapped her temple.

"It's logical."

The Strategist's Preparation

Later that afternoon the Challenger Arena filled again.

Students packed the stands.

Word spread quickly.

Akari Mizuta had issued a challenge.

And not just to anyone.

Her opponent was an upper-year elite class leader.

A calm-looking boy with short dark hair named Hikaru Raikō.

Lightning affinity.

Elite class leader.

Favored to win the match.

Akari stepped into the arena carrying only a small pouch of tools.

Kunai.

Wire.

Smoke tags.

Raizen noticed immediately.

She's already planned something.

The instructor raised his hand.

"Begin!"

Hikaru moved first.

Lightning chakra sparked faintly around his body.

A speed enhancement technique.

He closed distance instantly.

Akari threw two kunai.

Not at him.

At the ground.

Hikaru frowned.

Then smoke exploded across the arena.

Visibility collapsed.

Students in the stands gasped.

"What is she doing?"

Inside the smoke, Hikaru rushed forward.

Lightning chakra crackled around his fist.

He swung.

But his strike hit nothing but air.

A wire snapped tight around his ankle.

His balance shifted.

Another wire pulled from the opposite direction.

Hikaru dropped to one knee.

The smoke cleared slowly.

Akari stood several meters away.

Her hand held the end of three wires stretched across the arena floor.

The trap had been set in the first seconds of the match.

The instructor stepped forward.

"Match concluded."

The crowd erupted.

Hikaru stared at the wires for a moment.

Then laughed.

"Well played."

Akari bowed slightly.

"Thank you."

The Instructor's Lesson

Later that evening, several students gathered around Instructor Hoshin near the training yard.

The instructor gestured toward the arena.

"What did you learn from that match?"

One student answered.

"Traps are useful?"

Hoshin shook his head.

"No."

He pointed toward Akari.

"Preparation wins battles."

He turned to the group.

"A strategist does not fight the opponent."

"They fight the situation."

Raizen nodded quietly.

Akari smiled slightly.

Daigo crossed his arms.

"So basically…"

He pointed at Akari.

"So she cheated."

Akari elbowed him.

"It's called strategy."

The Board Changes Again

As evening settled, the Thunder Ranking Board updated again.

Students gathered around it.

New positions appeared.

Near the top now were several familiar names.

Raizen Tenrai.

Akari Mizuta.

Daigo Mizuta.

Ren Sōma.

Tetsuo Kurogane.

Kaede Arashino.

Students whispered excitedly.

"The Seven Stars…"

"They're all climbing together…"

Across the hall, Raizen studied the board quietly.

Akari stood beside him.

Daigo stretched his arms.

"This tournament's getting crazy."

Raizen nodded slightly.

"Yes."

Because the deeper the rankings climbed…

The stronger the opponents became.

And somewhere in the academy—

Someone else was already watching.
