Cherreads

Chapter 49 - Chapter 47 — Blades and Needles

The Challenger Arena inside Kumogakure

buzzed with energy again.

Word had spread quickly.

Raizen Tenrai had won another match.

And that meant another challenger.

Students filled the stands early.

Some curious.

Some excited.

Some watching more carefully than before.

Not all of them were cheering anymore.

Some were measuring.

Waiting.

Morning Study

Earlier that day, Raizen sat quietly in the academy library.

A thick book rested open before him.

Basic Shinobi Weapon Theory.

His eyes moved steadily across the page.

Inside his mind Astra spoke calmly.

"Reading speed stable."

Raizen didn't react.

He continued reading.

Kunai combat principles.

Balance.

Grip positions.

Throwing angles.

Astra absorbed each page as he finished it.

Not faster.

Exactly the same pace.

A rule they had learned.

Anything Raizen read—

Astra could retain perfectly.

But only after he read it first.

A small list formed in his thoughts.

Recommended reading order:

Weapon Theory

Chakra Control Manual

Academy Strategy Text

Raizen turned the page.

Efficient.

Training Adjustment

Later that afternoon, Raizen stood in a quiet practice ring.

A kunai flipped in his hand.

The balance was familiar.

But not his preference.

Senbon rested in a pouch along his left leg.

His weapon of choice.

Still—

Kunai were universal.

He needed to master them.

Raizen threw.

The blade struck the target cleanly.

But the rotation wavered slightly.

Inside his mind Astra spoke.

"Grip misalignment detected."

Raizen adjusted.

Threw again.

This time—

Dead center.

Stable.

Better.

A faint pause followed.

Then Astra added:

"Consistency improving."

Raizen allowed himself a small smirk.

The Next Opponent

By afternoon, the Challenger Arena filled again.

Students crowded the stands.

Akari Mizuta leaned against the railing calmly.

Beside her, Daigo Mizuta grinned widely.

"You see who he's fighting?"

Akari nodded.

"Yes."

"That one will be interesting."

Across the arena stood Raizen.

Opposite him—

Taro Kurogane.

Tall.

Lean.

Weapon pouches lined both sides of his belt.

Kunai handles filled his vest.

Shuriken rested between his fingers.

Daigo laughed.

"That guy sleeps with weapons."

Akari replied calmly.

"He's the best weapons specialist in the year."

Around them, a few students spoke more quietly.

"This might slow Tenrai down…"

"He can't just adapt forever…"

The Opening

The instructor stepped forward.

"Match begins on my signal."

Taro spun a kunai between his fingers.

"You're the one everyone keeps talking about."

Raizen shrugged.

"Maybe."

Taro smirked.

"Good."

Because in one smooth motion—

Three shuriken cut through the air.

Raizen felt it.

Not just visually—

A faint disturbance in the air.

A shift.

His body moved.

Two senbon flashed from his fingers.

Metal collided midair.

One shuriken deflected.

The others struck the ground behind him.

The arena erupted.

Daigo shouted from the stands.

"NOW THAT'S A FIGHT!"

Inside his mind Astra spoke.

"Projectile velocity: high."

"Trajectory variation detected."

Weapon Dance

Taro moved immediately.

Another kunai already in hand.

He closed distance fast.

Raizen stepped off-line.

A senbon snapped toward Taro's shoulder.

Taro twisted aside cleanly.

His kunai slashed toward Raizen's arm.

Raizen met it with his own.

Metal rang sharply.

The exchange tightened.

Faster.

Closer.

Sharper.

Taro didn't just use weapons—

He flowed through them.

Every motion connected.

No hesitation.

No wasted movement.

Students murmured.

"That guy's dangerous."

Akari nodded.

"He's been training weapons since childhood."

A New Challenge

The fight accelerated.

Kunai flashed.

Shuriken spun.

Senbon streaked through the air.

Angles shifted constantly.

Distance changed every second.

Raizen's eyes narrowed slightly.

This wasn't like Shin.

There was no body to control.

Only space.

Only timing.

Only precision.

Another set of projectiles flew.

Raizen felt it again—

A faint shift in the air.

Earlier than sight.

He moved just before the weapons arrived.

A subtle step.

Cleaner than before.

Inside his mind Astra spoke again.

"Reaction timing improved."

A brief pause.

Then—

"Predictive response emerging."

Raizen didn't answer.

But he understood.

The Storm Watches

Thunder rolled faintly across the mountains surrounding Kumogakure.

Wind shifted through the arena.

Steel flashed.

Footwork adjusted.

Timing tightened.

And across the stands—

More students were no longer talking.

They were watching.

Carefully.

Because Raizen Tenrai wasn't just reacting anymore.

He was starting to read the fight before it happened.

And the duel between blades and needles—

Had only just begun.
