Chapter 10 - Beyond victory

The battle was over.

Kaibutsu Kaze was dead.

But the village…

Still looked like it had lost.

Broken houses leaned against each other like they were about to collapse at any moment. The ground was cracked in long, jagged lines, and the air carried a faint, metallic scent that refused to fade.

Blood.

Even the wind felt heavy.

Arai moved carefully through the ruins, helping a wounded villager sit against what remained of a wall.

"It's okay… just stay still," she said softly.

The man nodded weakly, his hands shaking.

Arai forced a small smile, but the moment she turned away—

It vanished.

Nearby, Tetsuya lifted a thick wooden beam off a trapped survivor and tossed it aside.

"Easy… you're fine now," he said, offering a hand.

The villager grabbed it, pulling himself up.

"T-thank you…"

Tetsuya just gave a small nod.

"No problem."

Shizuma stood at a distance.

Silent.

Unmoving.

His eyes weren't on the survivors.

They were on everything else.

The destruction.

The bodies that couldn't be saved.

The result of a fight that had already ended.

Hours passed.

They searched every house.

Cleared every path.

Called out again and again—

But fewer and fewer voices answered.

By the time they were done—

The sun had begun to fall.

The sky burned in deep shades of red, casting long shadows across the ruined village.

"…That's everyone," Tetsuya said quietly.

Arai nodded, her gaze still low.

Shizuma turned without a word.

And just like that—

They left.

The road back to Ein Kage Dan stretched long and empty before them.

No one spoke.

Not at first.

Only the sound of footsteps filled the air.

Step… step… step…

Tetsuya glanced between them.

Arai walked slightly behind, her shoulders tense.

Shizuma walked ahead, his presence distant.

A faint smirk formed on Tetsuya's face.

"…Trying to be me, huh?"

Arai frowned. "What?"

Tetsuya shrugged casually.

"This whole silent, brooding thing."

He glanced at Shizuma.

"Kinda my style."

A short pause.

"…You two aren't pulling it off."

Arai clicked her tongue. "Shut up."

But despite herself—

Her expression softened just a little.

The silence didn't disappear.

But it loosened.

Then—

Shizuma spoke.

"…I thought I was strong enough."

The words stopped everything.

Arai's steps slowed.

Tetsuya's eyes shifted toward him.

Shizuma didn't look back.

"I thought I could handle anything."

A pause.

"But I was wrong."

The wind passed through them, colder now.

"I wasn't fast enough."

"I wasn't strong enough."

"And because of that…"

A brief pause.

"People died."

No one argued.

No one could.

Then—

"…And I couldn't protect Arai."

Arai stopped walking completely.

"…What did you just say?"

Tetsuya let out a quiet breath.

Yeah… here it comes.

Shizuma didn't turn.

"I failed."

Arai stepped forward, anger rising.

"I don't need your protection."

Shizuma stopped.

Arai's fists clenched tightly.

"Do you think I'm weak?"

"You hesitated."

The words landed instantly.

Arai's breath shook.

"That was because of his ability—!"

"And that's why you lost control."

Silence.

Sharp.

Arai's eyes trembled—not from fear—

But from frustration.

"Then what about you?!" she snapped.

"You think you were perfect?!"

Shizuma paused.

For a moment—

Just a moment—

"…No."

Arai froze.

Shizuma's voice remained calm, but heavier now.

"I misjudged him."

"I underestimated the situation."

"And that mistake…"

A pause.

"Cost lives."

The wind moved through them again.

But this time—

No one felt it.

Silence settled once more.

Deeper than before.

Then—

Tetsuya spoke.

"…Alright, real talk."

Both of them looked at him.

He stretched slightly, as if shaking off the weight of the conversation.

"You're both wrong."

Arai frowned. "Excuse me?"

Tetsuya shrugged.

"Shizuma, you're acting like strength is just crushing whatever's in front of you."

His gaze shifted.

"And Arai… pretending you didn't mess up won't fix anything."

Neither of them replied.

Tetsuya looked ahead, hands relaxed.

"We won. Cool."

A pause.

"…But if that was enough, that place wouldn't look like a graveyard."

That hit.

Harder than anything else.

Because it was simple.

And true.

Tetsuya's tone didn't change.

Didn't need to.

"So yeah," he continued,

"next time…"

He glanced at them, a faint smirk on his face.

"…let's not suck this much."

Arai looked away.

"…I hate that you're right."

Tetsuya chuckled softly.

"I know."

Arai's fists tightened.

"…I won't lose like that again."

Shizuma closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened them.

Clear.

Focused.

"…Same."

And just like that—

Something shifted.

Not their strength.

Not yet.

But their resolve.

By the time they reached the gates of Ein Kage Dan—

Night had fallen.

Torches flickered along the walls, casting shadows that danced with the wind.

A figure stood waiting.

Arms crossed.

Silent.

Tetsuya smirked slightly.

"…He was definitely waiting."

Arai exhaled.

"Kaizen…"

Shizuma's gaze hardened.

Kaizen watched them approach.

Carefully.

Silently.

"…You're late."

Tetsuya shrugged.

"Had to clean up the mess."

Kaizen's eyes moved across them.

Their silence.

Their expressions.

Their exhaustion—hidden, but present.

"…You defeated him."

"Yeah," Tetsuya replied.

A pause.

"…And yet—"

Kaizen's voice sharpened slightly.

"You don't look like victors."

Silence.

Arai looked away.

Shizuma said nothing.

Tetsuya smirked faintly.

"…Guess we're not."

Kaizen stepped aside.

"Good."

They paused.

"Because that means…"

"You understand your weakness."

The words sank deep.

Shizuma's grip tightened slightly.

Arai's eyes sharpened.

Tetsuya walked past him.

"…We're getting there."

Kaizen didn't respond.

"Rest," he said.

A brief pause.

"Tomorrow—"

His voice echoed behind them.

"We begin again."

The gates closed.

And that night—

Sleep didn't come easily.

Because for the first time—

They didn't just see victory.

They understood something far more important.

What remained…

Was not strength.

But the distance they still had to cross.
