Chapter 11 - At the edge of becoming

The hall was too quiet.

Not empty—never empty.

It felt like a place that had seen too much… and was waiting to see more.

Arai stood near the center, arms at his sides, posture straight despite the lingering ache in his body. The bandages beneath his clothes pulled slightly with every breath, but he didn't react.

Pain was expected.

What mattered was what came after it.

Beside him, Shizuma stretched his shoulder slowly, rotating it with a faint wince.

"…Still not used to this," he muttered.

"You don't need to be used to it," Arai replied without looking at him. "Just don't let it slow you down."

Shizuma smirked faintly. "…You've gotten serious."

Arai didn't answer.

His gaze stayed fixed ahead—on nothing in particular, yet everything at once.

Because this place… wasn't normal.

Even the air felt different.

Heavier.

Focused.

Then—

The door behind them opened.

Both of them turned slightly.

A woman stepped in.

Her presence wasn't loud.

But it didn't need to be.

She walked with controlled, deliberate steps—each one measured, efficient. No wasted movement. No hesitation.

Her eyes were sharp.

Observing.

Calculating.

She stopped a short distance away.

"…So this is where they called us."

Her voice was calm. Flat. Almost uninterested.

Arai studied her for a second.

"…You're here for the same reason."

She glanced at him briefly.

"…Obviously."

A pause.

Then—

"Jenres."

She didn't offer anything more.

Shizuma raised an eyebrow. "…Straight to the point, huh."

Jenres didn't respond.

She had already started scanning the hall again.

Walls.

Distance.

Positions.

Like she was preparing for something that hadn't started yet.

Another set of footsteps echoed.

Slower this time.

Heavier.

A tall girl entered next, her posture perfectly aligned, movements clean and precise.

She stopped near Jenres, but didn't acknowledge her.

Her eyes moved once across the room.

Then settled.

"…This place is structured well."

Her voice carried a quiet authority.

"Mei."

Simple.

Controlled.

Shizuma leaned slightly toward Arai. "…We're collecting serious people now."

Arai ignored him.

A loud step broke the rhythm.

Then another.

"…Tch."

A broad-shouldered boy walked in, cracking his knuckles as he moved.

His presence was the opposite of the others.

Loud.

Unfiltered.

Alive.

He looked around with a grin.

"…Hope this isn't a waste of time."

He stopped near the center, rolling his neck slightly.

"Daigo."

Shizuma sighed. "…Yeah, that's exactly what I expected."

Daigo glanced at him. "Got a problem?"

"…Not yet."

Then—

Silence returned.

For a moment.

Until—

The door opened again.

This time…

No confidence.

No presence.

Just… hesitation.

A boy stepped in slowly.

His movements were careful, almost uncertain.

His eyes didn't settle on anyone.

They moved constantly—

Door.

Corners.

Distance.

Space.

Like he was measuring something no one else was.

He stopped near the edge.

Keeping distance.

"…C-Corajudo," he said quietly.

Daigo stared at him for a second.

Then laughed.

"…No way that's real."

Shizuma tilted his head. "…Corajudo? Seriously?"

No response.

Corajudo just lowered his gaze slightly.

But Arai noticed something.

He wasn't avoiding them.

He was analyzing the room.

Especially the exits.

Six.

Now complete.

And then—

"You've all gathered."

The voice cut through the silence.

Kaizen.

No one saw him enter.

But he stood there.

At the front of the hall.

Still.

Unmoving.

Like he had always been there.

The atmosphere shifted instantly.

All attention moved to him.

His eyes passed over each of them—

Arai.

Shizuma.

Jenres.

Mei.

Daigo.

Corajudo.

Not judging.

Not praising.

Just… understanding.

"…Good."

He stepped forward.

"You were not called here because you are strong."

No one reacted.

"You were called here because you encountered your limits."

Arai's jaw tightened slightly.

Shizuma's expression lost its humor.

Jenres remained still—but her eyes sharpened.

Mei listened without movement.

Daigo clicked his tongue softly.

Corajudo… stayed quiet.

"You faced something beyond you," Kaizen continued.

"And for the first time—"

His voice lowered slightly.

"You understood."

Silence deepened.

"…You are not enough."

No denial came.

Because they all knew it.

Kaizen nodded faintly.

"That understanding… is your qualification."

He turned slightly, gesturing to the vast hall around them.

"This is not a training ground."

A pause.

"It is a threshold."

Arai spoke.

"…To what?"

Kaizen's gaze met his.

"To what remains… when everything else fails."

Then—

Without raising his voice—

"Fire of the Hell."

The name settled into the room.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Daigo smirked. "…Finally, something interesting."

Mei didn't react.

Jenres crossed her arms slightly. "…Explain."

Kaizen continued calmly.

"This training takes place within Hell Chambers."

"Each chamber is different."

"Each has its own rules."

"And its own conditions for survival."

Shizuma frowned. "…Survival?"

"Yes."

Kaizen's tone didn't change.

"This is not about victory."

"This is about adaptation."

Arai's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…So strength alone won't be enough."

"No."

Kaizen looked at him directly.

"It will fail you."

A faint silence followed.

Then—

"You will be placed into pairs."

That shifted the air.

Daigo scoffed. "I don't need one."

Jenres spoke without looking at him.

"…That mindset will get you killed."

He smirked. "You wanna test that?"

"Enough."

Kaizen's voice cut through instantly.

Silence returned.

"You will face conditions where your current self cannot succeed."

"You will be forced to change."

A pause.

"Or you will be removed."

No exaggeration.

No threat.

Just truth.

Corajudo's fingers tightened slightly.

But he didn't step back.

Kaizen turned slightly.

"The pairings will be announced soon."

"You will begin immediately after."

He paused.

Just enough for it to sink in.

"Decide now."

Arai stepped forward.

"I'm in."

No hesitation.

Shizuma smirked faintly. "…Yeah. Same."

Mei nodded. "Understood."

Daigo grinned. "Obviously."

Jenres spoke calmly.

"…If this is necessary, I'll proceed."

Then—

Silence.

All eyes shifted.

Corajudo.

He hesitated.

His breathing uneven for a moment.

His eyes moved again—

Exit.

Distance.

People.

Risk.

Everything.

Then—

Quietly—

"…I'll do it."

Not strong.

Not confident.

But certain.

Kaizen watched him.

Longer than the others.

Then nodded.

"…Very well."

He turned away.

"From this moment—"

"You are participants of Fire of the Hell."

Silence filled the hall once more.

But now—

It wasn't empty.

It was waiting.

Six individuals.

Different paths.

Different beliefs.

Standing at the same starting point.

None of them realizing—

That what they would face next…

Would not just test their strength.

But decide…

Who they become.

And who doesn't make it that far.
