Chapter 56 - The Line That Divides Kings

The royal court of Hastinapur had not regained its calm.

Not truly.

Even after the assembly had resumed…

Even after voices lowered…

Something had changed.

An invisible line had been drawn.

At the center of the hall stood Karna.

Unmoving.

Unbending.

Across from him—

The Pandavas.

Yudhishthira stepped forward first.

His expression calm, but serious.

"If what you say about these hidden forces is true…"

He paused briefly.

"Then Hastinapur must act wisely."

Before Karna could respond—

A sharp voice interrupted.

"And who decides what is wise?"

Duryodhana stepped forward.

His presence firm.

Uncompromising.

The court tensed again.

Yudhishthira met his gaze without anger.

"The throne does."

Duryodhana smirked slightly.

"And yet, the throne does not always act."

A subtle shift.

A direct challenge.

On the throne, Dhritarashtra remained silent.

But beside him, Vidura's eyes sharpened.

Karna watched everything.

Every word.

Every reaction.

This was not a discussion.

This was positioning.

Then—

A deep voice echoed through the hall.

"Enough."

Bhishma stepped forward.

His presence alone silenced both sides.

"Hastinapur does not fracture over words."

But even as he spoke—

The fracture already existed.

Krishna, standing quietly among the observers, watched with interest.

He spoke softly—

But every word carried weight.

"Sometimes…"

A pause.

"Words reveal what already exists."

All eyes turned toward him.

Duryodhana frowned slightly.

"Speak clearly."

Krishna smiled faintly.

"I always do."

He stepped forward.

His gaze moved between both sides.

"Two paths stand before Hastinapur."

He looked toward Yudhishthira.

"One of balance."

Then toward Duryodhana.

"One of ambition."

The air grew heavier.

Bhima stepped forward immediately.

"And what's wrong with ambition?"

Krishna's smile didn't fade.

"Nothing."

A pause.

"Until it consumes everything else."

Duryodhana's eyes hardened.

Karna stepped forward.

Breaking the tension.

"This is not why I came."

The court shifted slightly.

Karna continued.

"Internal conflict will only weaken Hastinapur."

His voice remained calm.

Controlled.

"And that is exactly what our enemies want."

A brief silence followed.

Dronacharya nodded slightly.

"There is truth in that."

Kripacharya added,

"A divided kingdom invites attack."

For a moment—

The court aligned.

But only for a moment.

Shakuni chuckled softly.

"Or perhaps…"

He leaned forward slightly.

"The real question is…"

His gaze locked onto Karna.

"Which side you strengthen."

The tension returned instantly.

Arjuna's eyes narrowed slightly.

Watching.

Waiting.

Karna didn't hesitate.

"I strengthen strength."

A pause.

"Wherever it stands."

Bhima scoffed.

"That's not an answer."

Karna turned toward him.

"It is."

His voice sharpened slightly.

"If Hastinapur stands united—"

"I stand with it."

Another pause.

"If it divides…"

His golden eyes moved between the Pandavas and Kauravas.

"Then I stand with the one who does not break."

Silence.

The meaning was clear.

Duryodhana smiled.

Yudhishthira remained calm.

But thoughtful.

Arjuna stepped forward slightly.

"And who do you think that is?"

The question hung in the air.

Karna met his gaze directly.

"When the time comes…"

His voice was steady.

"You'll know."

A long silence followed.

Then—

Unexpectedly—

Vidura spoke.

"We are asking the wrong question."

The court turned toward him.

His voice was calm.

Wise.

"The question is not where Karna stands."

A pause.

"It is whether Hastinapur stands as one."

That struck deeper than anything else.

Even Bhishma remained silent.

Because he knew.

That answer…

Was uncertain.

Krishna's eyes gleamed slightly.

The board was shifting.

Slowly.

Inevitably.

Dhritarashtra finally spoke.

"Then it is decided."

The court stilled.

"We will not ignore this threat."

His voice carried authority.

"A council will be formed."

"To investigate these hidden forces."

A pause.

"And Karna of Ang…"

All eyes turned to him again.

"You will remain in Hastinapur…"

"Until this matter is understood."

Duryodhana smiled faintly.

This was exactly what he wanted.

Karna nodded once.

"As you wish."

But across the hall—

Arjuna watched him carefully.

This was no longer just rivalry.

This was something greater.

Two warriors.

Two ideologies.

Two destinies.

And now—

They stood in the same city.

Under the same sky.

Krishna turned slightly toward the open windows.

Where sunlight streamed into the court.

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"The line has been drawn."

And this time—

No one could erase it.
