Chapter 57 - The Trial of Worth

The sun had barely risen over Hastinapur…

Yet the training grounds were already alive.

Steel clashed.

Feet shifted across dust.

Warriors pushed themselves beyond limits.

At the center of the vast field—

A space had been cleared.

Not for training.

For something else.

Something deliberate.

Word had spread quickly through the city.

A test.

A demonstration.

A challenge.

From the elevated stone platform, the elders watched.

Bhishma stood tall, arms behind his back.

Beside him, Dronacharya observed with sharp, calculating eyes.

Kripacharya remained calm, silent.

Nearby—

The Pandavas stood together.

Bhima looked impatient.

"Why all this formality?"

Arjuna's eyes remained fixed on the empty field.

"This isn't formality."

A pause.

"It's judgment."

On the opposite side—

Duryodhana stood with quiet confidence.

Vrinda beside him.

Watching everything.

Understanding more than most.

She spoke softly.

"This isn't just about skill."

Duryodhana smirked.

"No."

"It's about acceptance."

Then—

The gates to the training ground opened.

And Karna walked in.

Golden armor gleaming under the rising sun.

Every step steady.

Every movement controlled.

The murmurs began immediately.

"He's really here…"

"The King of Ang…"

"Duryodhana's warrior…"

But Karna ignored it all.

His gaze moved only once—

Toward the center of the field.

Then—

Another figure stepped forward.

Arjuna.

Silence fell instantly.

The distance between them wasn't far.

But it felt like two worlds standing apart.

Dronacharya stepped forward.

His voice echoed clearly.

"Today is not a battle."

A pause.

"It is a measure."

His eyes moved between both warriors.

"Of discipline."

"Of control."

"Of worth."

Bhima muttered under his breath.

"Sounds like a battle to me."

Yudhishthira didn't respond.

But his expression remained serious.

Drona raised his hand.

"You will each demonstrate your mastery."

He looked at Arjuna first.

"Begin."

Arjuna stepped forward.

He closed his eyes briefly.

A single breath.

Then—

His bow moved.

Fast.

Precise.

Effortless.

Three arrows released in a single motion.

Thwack. Thwack. Thwack.

Three targets.

Three perfect centers.

Without pause—

He moved again.

Arrows curved mid-air.

Striking moving targets.

Impossible angles.

Perfect timing.

Gasps spread through the watching crowd.

Bhishma nodded slightly.

Drona's eyes showed quiet approval.

Arjuna lowered his bow.

Calm.

Composed.

Dronacharya turned.

"Karna."

Karna stepped forward.

No dramatic movement.

No display.

Just stillness.

Then—

He raised his spear.

A weapon different from the bow.

Different from Arjuna.

A whisper of golden energy flickered along its edge.

Some in the crowd frowned.

Others leaned forward.

Karna moved.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Perfect.

He threw the spear.

It cut through the air like sunlight itself.

Struck the first target.

And didn't stop.

It pierced through three targets in a straight line—

Before embedding into stone.

Silence.

Then—

Murmurs erupted.

Drona's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Again."

Karna extended his hand.

The spear trembled—

Then returned to him.

The crowd froze.

Even Arjuna's expression shifted slightly.

This time—

Karna moved faster.

The spear spun in his hand.

Then—

Multiple throws.

Each strike precise.

Each movement controlled.

Targets shattered.

Not just hit.

Destroyed.

Vrinda watched quietly.

"He's not showing everything."

Duryodhana smiled.

"He never does."

The demonstration ended.

Silence filled the training grounds.

Dronacharya stepped forward.

Both warriors stood before him.

Equal.

Yet different.

He spoke slowly.

"Two paths."

A pause.

"Two forms of mastery."

His gaze lingered on Karna.

"You are not my student."

The words carried weight.

But Karna didn't react.

Drona continued.

"Yet your skill…"

A brief pause.

"Cannot be denied."

That alone shocked many.

Recognition.

From Dronacharya.

Then—

Before anyone could speak—

A voice rang out.

"Then let them fight."

All heads turned.

Bhima.

He stepped forward.

Eyes blazing.

"Enough demonstrations."

His gaze shifted between Karna and Arjuna.

"Let's see who's stronger."

The tension spiked instantly.

Arjuna didn't speak.

But his grip tightened slightly.

Duryodhana stepped forward.

"I agree."

Bhishma's voice thundered across the field.

"No."

Silence.

Absolute.

"This is not the time."

His gaze hardened.

"And not the place."

Krishna, watching from a distance, smiled faintly.

"Not yet…"

The moment passed.

But not the tension.

Dronacharya lowered his hand.

"This trial is concluded."

But as the crowd began to disperse—

Arjuna stepped closer to Karna.

Just enough for only him to hear.

"When the time comes…"

His voice was calm.

But firm.

"I won't hold back."

Karna met his gaze.

"Neither will I."

For a brief second—

The world around them faded.

Two warriors.

Bound by destiny.

As Karna turned to leave—

Krishna watched him carefully.

His eyes thoughtful.

Calculating.

Because now—

He knew.

The war of the future…

Would not be decided by armies alone.

But by men like these.

Above them—

The sun climbed higher into the sky.

Unstoppable.

Unavoidable.

Just like what was coming.
