Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 - The Pattern

The traffic lights flickered once more… and then went completely dark.

Rain continued falling steadily as cars slowed near the intersection.

Drivers leaned out their windows, confused.

Some honked impatiently.

Others tried to move forward cautiously.

Liya stared at the broken signal.

Her chest tightened.

"Ethan… this is bad."

He frowned.

"It's just a traffic light."

"No," she said quietly.

"It's not."

He looked at her.

"You've seen something like this before?"

She nodded slowly.

"In the other loops… something always goes wrong before your accident."

"What kind of things?"

"Small things," she said.

"Mechanical failures. Distractions. Unexpected events."

She gestured toward the dark intersection.

"Like that."

Ethan watched the traffic carefully.

"So fate creates the conditions."

"Yes."

"And then waits."

"Exactly."

A car moved slowly through the intersection.

Another followed.

Drivers were clearly nervous now without the signal guiding them.

Ethan crossed his arms thoughtfully.

"Interesting."

Liya glanced at him.

"You sound like a detective."

"Well, we are investigating a murder."

She blinked.

"A murder?"

"My future one."

Despite herself, she almost smiled.

Then suddenly—

A loud crash echoed from the intersection.

Two cars collided in the middle of the road.

Metal crunched loudly.

People nearby shouted in shock.

Liya flinched.

The accident wasn't huge.

Just a fender-bender.

But it proved something important.

Ethan watched the scene carefully.

"See?" he said quietly.

"The universe isn't aiming directly at me."

"What do you mean?"

"It's creating chaos."

He pointed toward the crashed cars.

"If I had been standing there…"

"…that accident could've killed me."

Liya felt a chill.

"You're saying fate builds situations."

"Exactly."

"And if I'm in the wrong place at the wrong time…"

"…I die."

Rain dripped from the store awning above them.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Then Ethan asked quietly,

"What time did the accident happen in the first loop?"

"11:59 PM."

"And the second?"

"Also right before midnight."

He nodded slowly.

"So midnight is the trigger."

"Seems like it."

He leaned against the wall, thinking deeply.

"That means the universe has a deadline."

Liya frowned.

"A deadline?"

"Yes."

"If I'm still alive at midnight…"

"…the loop resets."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"That makes sense."

"But it also means something else."

"What?"

Ethan looked directly at her.

"We've been playing defense."

"Trying to avoid the accidents."

"Yes."

"But maybe we should do the opposite."

"Opposite how?"

His expression turned serious.

"What if we face fate directly?"

Liya blinked.

"You want to challenge destiny?"

"Why not?"

"That sounds incredibly dangerous."

"I'm already scheduled to die tonight."

He shrugged lightly.

"So the risk is already included."

She rubbed her temples.

"You're insane."

"Probably."

Then he checked his phone.

6:18 PM.

"We still have several hours."

"So what's your plan?"

Ethan glanced toward the city skyline.

Rain clouds hung heavy above the buildings.

"My plan," he said slowly,

"…is to find the exact moment fate tries to kill me."

"And stop it."

Liya stared at him.

"That sounds easier said than done."

He smiled.

"True."

Then he pointed down the street.

"Let's keep moving."

"Where are we going now?"

"Somewhere unpredictable."

"Why?"

"Because if fate is watching our patterns…"

"…we're about to break all of them."

They stepped away from the store and continued walking through the rainy streets.

The city lights reflected across the wet pavement.

For the first time since the loop began…

They weren't just reacting to fate.

They were hunting it.

But far away, above the city…

The clock tower continued counting down.

And midnight was getting closer. ⏳
