Chapter 29 - Chapter 29 - The First Change

The woman wandered through the bookstore slowly.

Her umbrella dripped quietly near the door.

She ran her fingers across a row of journals before pulling one out.

"Excuse me," she said, looking at Liya."Is this one leather?"

Liya blinked.

"…Yes."

Her voice sounded distant.

Because this had never happened before.

Not once in twenty-seven loops.

The woman smiled politely.

"I'll take it."

Liya rang up the purchase automatically.

The entire time, Ethan watched with curiosity.

When the woman finally left, the doorbell rang again.

Ding.

Silence returned to the bookstore.

Ethan leaned forward on the counter.

"Well."

"Well?" Liya asked.

"That was new."

"Yes."

"Which means something changed."

Liya nodded slowly.

"But what?"

Ethan crossed his arms, thinking.

"In every previous loop, the timeline was rigid."

"Yes."

"The same people."

"The same accidents."

"The same disasters."

"And the same ending."

Liya finished quietly.

"Midnight."

Ethan tapped the counter again.

"But this time…"

"…something small shifted."

She looked at the door where the woman had exited.

"A random customer."

"Exactly."

"And that tiny difference means the system is unstable now."

"The system?"

"The loop."

He smiled slightly.

"Think about it."

"For twenty-seven loops, fate repeated the same script."

"Yes."

"But now the script has changed."

Liya felt a small spark of hope.

"You think we're breaking the loop?"

"Not yet."

"Then what?"

"I think we're… rewriting it."

She frowned.

"How?"

Ethan pointed at her.

"You."

"Me?"

"You changed the pattern."

Liya blinked.

"How?"

"Last loop."

"You convinced me to face fate."

"Yes."

"And I chose to die."

Her chest tightened again.

"That didn't work."

"No."

"But something important happened."

"What?"

"You changed the story."

Ethan leaned back slightly.

"In every loop before that…"

"…we spent the entire night running."

"Yes."

"But last time…"

"…you changed the ending."

Liya looked down at the counter.

"So fate responded."

"Exactly."

"But not how we expected."

The clock on the wall ticked quietly.

4:12 PM.

Liya looked up again.

"So what do we do now?"

Ethan smiled.

"This time…"

"…we stop reacting."

"Then what?"

"We experiment."

She sighed slightly.

"That sounds dangerous."

"Everything tonight will be dangerous."

He grabbed a random book from the shelf and flipped it open.

"But if we want to understand the loop…"

"…we need to test it properly."

"How?"

Ethan closed the book.

And his next words made Liya freeze.

"Tonight…"

"…we do absolutely nothing."

Her eyes widened.

"What?!"

"No running."

"No avoiding disasters."

"No interfering with fate."

"That's insane!"

"Maybe."

"But if the universe keeps trying to kill me…"

"…let's see what happens when we don't fight it."

Liya stared at him.

"You're basically saying we wait for death."

"Not exactly."

Ethan looked toward the rainy street outside.

"I'm saying…"

"…we let fate show its hand."

The idea made her nervous.

But deep down…

She knew something had changed in the loop.

For the first time…

The future wasn't completely predictable anymore.

And that meant one thing.

Tonight…

Anything could happen. ⏳
