For several seconds after Gloria's announcement, nobody in the Dunphy living room seemed capable of reacting.
The family had only just finished processing Haley and Jack's pregnancy. Claire was still trying to understand how she'd become a future grandmother at forty, Phil had already started mentally designing grandfather titles, Cam was emotionally planning a baby shower, and Mitchell was working very hard to remain supportive while still grieving the adoption that had fallen apart.
Then Gloria had looked directly at Jay and said she was pregnant.
Mitchell broke first.
"Oh, come on!" he exclaimed, throwing both hands into the air as though the universe had personally targeted him.
Cameron's mouth dropped open as he stared at Gloria. "Pregnant?!"
Jay looked at his wife with complete disbelief. "You gotta be kidding me!"
Luke's face twisted with sudden horror as a completely different realization hit him. "Oh, gross. I didn't know Grandpa could still do it."
Phil immediately turned toward his son with a disapproving expression. "Don't be disrespectful, Luke. Anyone could do it with Gloria."
The room went quiet again.
Claire slowly turned toward her husband.
Phil's eyes widened as he heard his own sentence several seconds too late.
"I meant because she's beautiful," he said quickly. "Very beautiful. Respectfully beautiful. Married-to-Jay beautiful."
Gloria barely noticed the whispering.
Her attention remained fixed on Jay, whose first reaction had confirmed every fear she'd carried since discovering the pregnancy the previous night. She straightened her shoulders and lifted her chin, preparing herself for the argument she'd spent all morning imagining.
"And if you're too set in your old ways to be happy about it, I can raise it on my own," Gloria declared, her voice rising with every sentence. "I have done it before, and I can do it now. I come from a very long line of strong Latin women whose husbands are nowhere to be found!"
Jay waited until she finally stopped.
"Are you done?" he asked.
Gloria crossed her arms tightly across her chest. "Yes!"
Jay shifted closer and looked directly into her eyes. "Can I say something?"
"Go on!"
His expression softened so suddenly that Gloria's anger began fading before he even spoke.
"That's the greatest news I've ever heard."
Gloria blinked, and everyone was surprised too. They expected Jay to freak out or create a drama, yet he looked really happy.
"It is?" she asked quietly.
Jay nodded as emotion slowly replaced the shock on his face. He reached for her hands and held them between his own before glancing around the crowded living room.
"I've spent the last twenty minutes watching this family ride one brutal emotional roller coaster," he said, looking at Jack and Haley. "Half of us are celebrating a whole new generation because Haley and Jack are having a baby," He turned toward Mitch and Cam. "And the other half is hurting because Mitchell and Cam just had another adoption fall apart."
Mitchell lowered his eyes while Cameron rested a hand against his shoulder.
Jay turned back toward Gloria.
"And somewhere in the middle of all this chaos, I started feeling like my time as the guy holding this family together was slipping away from me. The kids are grown. Claire's about to become a grandmother. Mitchell already has Lily. Everybody's moving into another stage of their lives."
His voice roughened slightly, which caused Gloria's expression to soften completely.
"Then you tell me that we get to bring our own new life into this mess," Jay continued. "That I get another chance to do all of it again, except this time I get to do it with the woman of my dreams."
Gloria's eyes immediately filled with tears.
Jay gave her a small smile.
"I think I'm gonna cry."
From somewhere beside Claire came a loud sniff.
Phil wiped beneath both eyes with his fingers. "I'm way ahead of you."
Cameron stared around the room with tears already streaming down his face. "Can you believe this?"
Mitchell rubbed both hands across his face and sighed. "I know. They wouldn't even let us get a cat."
Jay laughed despite the emotion threatening to overwhelm him. He pulled Gloria closer and rested one hand carefully against her waist. "It's gonna be great."
Gloria smiled through her tears before another realization made her glance down at herself. "I'm gonna get so fat!"
Jay's smile remained steady. "Mostly great."
Gloria smacked him lightly on the chest.
The family erupted.
Everyone started talking again at once. Cam moved toward Gloria with both arms already open. Claire laughed while trying to keep her calm. Phil hugged Jay hard enough that Jay immediately tried to peel him away. Luke began asking questions nobody wanted him to ask, while Alex stood near the couch watching the entire scene with the expression of someone witnessing mathematics violate several laws of nature.
Jack and Haley watched the family enjoy and smiled.
"Thank you," Haley whispered.
"For what?" Jack asked.
"For taking the heat off us," Haley whispered, letting out a breath she felt like she'd been holding all day. She leaned into his side, a genuine, relieved smile finally breaking across her face as she watched the family swarm Jay and Gloria. "After we got out of the hospital, I was the scandalous teenage pregnancy of the century. Now? Our kid is just going to be part of the opening credits budget increase. You timed this perfectly, Jack."
Jack chuckled, kissing the top of her head as Phil loudly tried to pitch 'Grandpa-Bro' to Claire in the background. "I told you we'd be fine."
"Yeah, well," Haley said, squeezing his hand tightly, her eyes reflecting a mix of lingering terror and deep excitement for the absolute chaos ahead. "Let's just see if you're still saying that when my uncle and my baby are sharing the same diaper brand."
Jack's parents congratulated Jay and Gloria.
The room settled again as the implications of two simultaneous pregnancies finally began reaching everyone.
Claire's hands slowly rose toward her head.
"Wait. Hold on. Stop."
Phil looked toward her.
Claire pointed first at Haley and then at Gloria. "You two are pregnant at the same time?"
Haley glanced toward Gloria before looking back at her mother. "Yes."
Claire's voice climbed slightly higher. "So my daughter is having a baby, and my stepmother is having a baby. Which means my grandchild and my new sibling are going to be in the same sandbox."
Alex tilted her head. "Statistically, probably."
Claire ignored her.
"I am way too young to be a grandmother and an older sister to a newborn at the same time," Claire continued before turning desperately toward her husband. "Phil, do something!"
Phil stood completely still while his mind processed the situation from a very different angle.
"I don't know what to do, honey, but think about this," he said as wonder slowly spread across his face. "An uncle and nephew could be the exact same age. They could grow up together. Same school, same birthday parties, maybe even the same sports teams."
Claire closed her eyes.
Phil became increasingly excited by his own idea. "It's like the movie Twins, Claire, except hopefully neither of them looks like Danny DeVito."
Jay looked toward him.
Phil immediately corrected himself. "Danny DeVito is a handsome man."
Claire lowered her hands. "You're making everything worse."
Phil turned toward Jay with open admiration. "Also, Jay, man, you still got it."
He raised one hand enthusiastically for a high-five.
Jay stared at him.
Phil's hand remained in the air for several uncomfortable seconds before he slowly lowered it.
"Sorry," Phil said. "Respect. Keeping that in my pocket."
Mitchell had apparently reached another stage of emotional processing.
He stepped into the middle of the room and gestured toward himself and Cameron.
"Okay, let me make sure I understand the universe's math here," he began. "Haley gets a baby. My dad and Gloria get a baby. Meanwhile, Cam and I spend months preparing ourselves emotionally, financially, and psychologically for another child, and the universe looks directly at us and says, 'No. You two get to watch everyone else multiply like rabbits.'"
Cam gave him a warning look. "Mitchell."
"No, I'm happy," Mitchell insisted, although his expression made the statement difficult to believe. "Really, I am happy for everybody. I just need a very strong drink."
He paused.
"Or a baby."
Cameron sighed.
"Preferably a baby," Mitchell continued. "Tonight, though, I'd settle for a triple scotch."
Cameron immediately pressed one hand dramatically against his chest. "Mitchell, how can you think about alcohol at a time like this?"
Mitchell stared at him. "Very easily."
"This is beautiful," Cam declared as he pulled a linen pocket square from his jacket and dabbed beneath his eyes. "It's tragic, joyful, complicated, and completely unexpected. This family has somehow turned one afternoon into a Shakespearean masterpiece."
Mitchell looked toward Claire. "He's going to start assigning acts."
Cameron ignored him and turned toward Haley and Gloria.
"I am so happy for both of you," he said, already crying openly. "I will gladly design both nurseries."
Haley opened her mouth.
Cam raised one finger.
"However, if one of you chooses farmhouse chic and the other doesn't, I will consider it a personal attack."
Mitchell sighed. "Nobody asked you to design anything."
"They haven't had time," Cameron replied.
Manny had been sitting on the couch during the entire exchange, growing progressively more disturbed as the family structure reorganized itself around him.
He finally leaned back and stared toward the ceiling.
"Great. This is just great."
Jay looked toward him. "What's your problem?"
Manny gestured helplessly around the room. "I went from being an only child to having a half-sibling, and now I'm also going to be a step-uncle to a baby that could be practically the same age as my sibling."
Luke looked impressed. "That sounds awesome."
"It sounds psychologically exhausting," Manny replied.
He rubbed one hand across his face.
"My art portfolio is going to get so dark this semester."
Luke turned toward Haley with a grin.
"Hey, if your kid and Grandpa's kid are the same age, does that mean I get to be the cool uncle and the cool uncle-cousin?"
Alex didn't even look up from her phone.
"No, Luke. It just means our family tree is officially a tumbleweed."
Luke considered that.
"I like tumbleweeds."
"Of course you do."
Near the center of the room, Jack had remained surprisingly quiet.
Haley looked toward Gloria, then down toward her own stomach.
"So does this mean we're pregnancy buddies?"
Gloria's eyes lit up immediately.
Haley looked at her with growing excitement. "Can we share maternity clothes? Because your wardrobe is way more expensive than mine, and I am not wearing those giant floral tents my mom wore when she was pregnant with Luke."
Claire's mouth opened.
Alex smirked.
"I've seen the pictures," Haley added.
Claire pointed toward her. "Those were fashionable."
"In what country?"
"It was 1998!"
"That doesn't answer the question."
Gloria hurried toward Haley and took both of her hands.
"Yes, mi amor," Gloria said happily. "We will shop together, we will do prenatal yoga, and we will eat spicy food so the babies become strong."
Claire frowned. "I don't think spicy food makes babies strong."
Gloria dismissed the objection immediately. "It makes Colombians strong."
Haley laughed.
Gloria squeezed her hands. "And we will terrorize both our husbands until they go completely crazy."
For the third time in less than an hour, the Dunphy living room fell completely silent.
Haley's smile froze while Gloria continued holding both of her hands. One word from Gloria seemed to echo louder than everything else that had been said since the family gathered.
Husbands.
Haley blinked several times before her eyes drifted toward Jack. "H-husband?"
