Chapter 123 - Expecting the Unexpected Pt2

A few seconds later, the front door opened.

Jack walked inside with Haley beside him.

Haley made it approximately two steps before stopping.

Her eyes moved across the living room.

Her parents were there. Alex and Luke were there. Jay, Gloria, Manny, Mitchell, Cam, and Lily were there. Jack's parents were standing near the other side of the room. The space around the stairs looked really crowded.

Everyone was looking directly at them.

Haley slowly turned toward Jack.

The expression on her face asked the question before she managed to say anything.

"You called everyone?"

Jack gave her hand a nervous squeeze. "I thought we'd only have to explain it once."

Haley looked around the room again, clearly reconsidering every life decision that had brought her to this exact moment.

Phil stepped forward. "Okay, you two are scaring us. What's going on?"

Jack opened his mouth, then stopped.

He inhaled slowly.

His grip around Haley's hand tightened.

Then he looked around the room and said, "Underage kids, go upstairs."

Manny and Luke moved instantly.

Neither of them argued, which probably worried Claire more than anything else that had happened since the emergency message arrived. Manny headed toward the staircase with Luke directly behind him, while Lily looked up at Mitchell in confusion.

Mitchell gave his daughter a gentle push toward the stairs. "Go with Manny, sweetie."

Lily hurried after them, her little footsteps disappearing upstairs.

The house became painfully quiet.

Haley's hand was still in his, and Jack could feel how tense her fingers had become. His own weren't much better. He'd spent the entire drive preparing himself for this moment, going through different ways to say it and discarding every one because they all sounded wrong.

There wasn't a clever way to announce something that had changed their lives in the space of one afternoon.

Jack took one more deep breath before saying, "Haley and I are having a baby."

For several seconds, nobody reacted.

Claire stared at them as though she'd heard the individual words without managing to assemble them into a sentence. Alex's eyes widened beside her. Mitchell went completely still, while Cam's mouth slowly opened. Gloria's hand rose toward her lips.

Jay simply stared at Jack and Haley.

Phil was the first person who managed to speak.

His eyes moved from Jack to his daughter. "You're pregnant?"

This time Haley gathered her courage and replied, "Yes." She cleared her throat, her voice wavering slightly despite her effort to sound confident. "And w-we're really happy about it."

Phil's expression softened. "Why wouldn't you be?"

Haley blinked.

Of all the reactions she'd imagined during the drive over, that hadn't been the one she'd expected from her father. Some of the tension left her face as she looked at him, though her attention almost immediately shifted toward Claire.

Her mother still hadn't said anything.

Claire had spent so much time worrying about this exact possibility that actually seeing it happen left her strangely unprepared.

Only hours earlier, she'd stood in the kitchen talking to Phil about Haley and Jack spending nearly every night together. She'd worried about protection, about an accidental pregnancy, about their careers, about everything they might have to give up if one careless decision changed their lives.

Now her nineteen-year-old daughter was standing a few feet away, telling her that the thing she'd been afraid of had already happened.

"Wow!" Claire finally managed.

Haley searched her face nervously. "Mom?"

Claire drew in a slow breath. "It's... it's a lot to process at once, and..." She sighed as her eyes briefly dropped toward Haley's stomach before returning to her daughter's face.

The words 'I was right' came dangerously close to escaping.

Claire swallowed them.

For once, being right didn't matter.

"A baby. Unbelievable!"

A large smile finally broke across her face as she opened her arms.

Haley's eyes immediately filled with tears.

She crossed the small distance between them and fell into her mother's embrace. Claire wrapped both arms around her tightly, one hand moving instinctively to the back of Haley's head as her own eyes became wet.

The fear was still there. Claire knew it wasn't going anywhere simply because she loved her daughter. There would be difficult conversations later. Doctors, plans, work, living arrangements, and a thousand practical questions were waiting for all of them.

None of those things mattered during the hug.

Haley was scared, even if she'd just stood in front of the family and declared that she was happy. Claire could feel it in the way her daughter held onto her.

Phil came over a moment later and wrapped his arms around both of them, pulling Jack into the embrace as well.

For a few seconds, Jack found himself caught in the middle of the Dunphy family.

Jack's father waited until the family hug loosened before stepping toward his son. He didn't say anything immediately. He simply put an arm around Jack and patted him firmly on the back.

"Used up all your courage?"

Jack let out the breath he'd apparently been holding since he entered the house and leaned slightly closer to his father.

"My legs are jelly."

His dad gave his back another reassuring pat. "You'll do just fine. Always take care of her."

Something about hearing those words from his father nearly broke through the calm Jack had been desperately maintaining since the hospital.

He nodded and hugged him a little tighter. "I will."

Nearby, Jack's mother had already gone to Haley. She cupped Haley's face for a moment, studying the nervous young woman in front of her before pulling her into a warm hug.

Haley stiffened for only a fraction of a second.

She'd spent part of the afternoon worrying about this reaction almost as much as Claire's. Jack's parents had every reason to look at her and think about what this might mean for their son's career. He was nineteen, his career was accelerating faster than ever, and suddenly there was going to be a baby in the middle of everything.

Instead, Jack's mother simply held her.

Haley's arms slowly tightened around her.

Behind them, Cam finally lost whatever control had prevented him from exploding earlier.

"Oh, my gosh! A baby!"

His voice filled the room with enough excitement that Mitchell immediately grabbed his arm before he could launch himself at the expectant parents.

Cam pressed both hands against his chest, his face already glowing with the emotional intensity of someone who had mentally skipped several months ahead.

"A baby," he repeated, softer this time. "We're having another baby in the family."

Mitchell smiled despite himself. The disappointment of their own failed adoption was still painfully fresh, and for the briefest moment something complicated passed across his expression. Then he looked at Haley, saw the mixture of happiness and fear on her face, and let the feeling go.

He walked over and hugged his niece.

"Congratulations," Mitchell said warmly. When he pulled back, he looked between Haley and Jack. "This is huge, and I'm guessing completely terrifying, but you have all of us."

"That might be the terrifying part," Alex said from nearby.

The joke broke the remaining tension.

Jack laughed first, followed by Haley, and soon even Claire was smiling through the emotion still sitting on her face.

Alex stood and walked toward her sister.

Haley watched her approach with a slightly wary expression. "Please don't calculate the statistical probability of me ruining my life."

"I wasn't going to," Alex replied.

Haley looked genuinely surprised.

Alex's expression softened as she hugged her. "I was going to say congratulations."

Haley hugged her back. "Thanks."

Alex remained there for another moment before quietly adding, "You're going to be a good mom."

Haley's smile disappeared beneath sudden emotion.

She tightened her arms around Alex before her sister could see how much the words had affected her.

Across the room, Jay had remained unusually quiet.

He watched Claire for a moment before walking toward her. She had stepped aside to give Haley room with everyone else, though her eyes hadn't left her daughter.

Jay slipped an arm around Claire and pulled her into a hug with a small smile.

"You handled that a lot better than I did back in the day," He said.

Claire sighed and leaned against him for a moment. "Outside. On the inside, I'm you."

Jay gave a slow, understanding nod. "Mm-hmm."

Claire looked back toward Haley.

Her daughter was standing between Jack and his mother now, smiling while Cam excitedly talked to Mitchell. Phil hovered close enough that he was clearly fighting the urge to hug everyone again, while Alex stayed beside her sister.

Claire let out another breath.

She was going to be a grandmother.

The thought was so absurd that she almost laughed.

Phil seemed to reach the same realization because his eyes suddenly widened.

"Wait."

Claire immediately knew she wasn't going to like whatever came next.

Phil looked at her with growing excitement. "We're going to be grandparents."

"Yes, Phil."

His smile became enormous. "I'm going to be a grandpa."

Claire pointed at him. "Don't start picking grandfather names."

"I wasn't."

"You were."

"I had one thought."

"No."

Phil looked wounded. "You don't even know what it was."

"I know you."

Before Phil could defend whatever terrible grandfather name had entered his mind, footsteps came racing down the stairs.

Apparently, the three children upstairs had decided they'd waited long enough.

Luke appeared first with Manny close behind him, while Lily carefully hurried after them.

Luke looked around at the adults. "Can we know what happened now?"

Phil glanced toward Haley.

Haley looked at Jack, who gave her a small smile and squeezed her hand again. This time she didn't look nearly as frightened. She faced Luke, Manny, and Lily. "Jack and I are having a baby."

Luke stared at her.

Manny's mouth fell open.

Lily looked at Haley's stomach.

Luke's eyes suddenly widened. "You're having a baby?"

Haley laughed. "Yes. We are."

Luke looked toward Jack, then back toward his sister as a grin spread across his face. "That's awesome." He rushed over and hugged Haley hard enough to make Claire immediately tell him to be careful.

Manny approached more calmly, though his smile was just as genuine. "Congratulations."

"Thank you," Haley replied as she hugged him.

Lily had yet to move.

She continued staring at Haley's stomach with intense concentration until Haley finally noticed.

"What are you doing?"

"Looking for the baby."

Mitchell rubbed his forehead. "Lily, you can't see it through her stomach."

Lily looked disappointed by this obvious design flaw. "Why not?" She asked.

Haley crouched carefully in front of her. "It's really tiny right now."

Lily considered that before asking, "Can it play with me when it comes out?"

"In a few years."

Lily frowned. "That's too long."

Haley laughed and opened her arms. Lily walked into them and allowed herself to be hugged, apparently deciding she could tolerate the baby's developmental schedule for the moment.

The room became loud again almost immediately.

Luke wanted to know whether the baby would call him Uncle Luke. Manny had already begun discussing the importance of reading to children from an early age. Phil was still trying to reopen negotiations regarding grandfather names. Cam had started talking about baby showers despite Mitchell repeatedly telling him they had only learned about the pregnancy ten minutes earlier.

Even Jay had begun asking Jack practical questions about whether he'd thought about what would happen with work.

For the first time since leaving the hospital, Haley felt as though she could breathe normally.

She found Jack beside her and slipped her hand back into his.

He looked at her.

"You okay?" he asked quietly.

Haley nodded and leaned slightly against him. "Ask me again when my mom remembers she's supposed to yell at me."

Claire heard her from across the room. "Oh, we're still having a conversation later."

Haley closed her eyes. "There it is."

Jack laughed and kissed the side of her head.

Gloria watched them from beside Jay.

She'd been smiling throughout the celebration, genuinely happy for Haley and Jack, though another thought had been growing increasingly impossible to ignore.

Her own secret.

She had spent the entire morning trying to tell Jay. Every time she came close, something interrupted them. Then she'd gone to Claire and finally admitted it to someone, only for the rest of the day to become consumed by everything else happening in the family.

Now she stood in a room celebrating a new baby while carrying news of another one.

Gloria looked at Jay. He was smiling. Then she turned to Jack. He was only 19, but he had the courage to tell the truth and take responsibility. He could have let Haley handle the hard part, but he didn't.

'And here I am trying to delay her surprise.'

She raised her voice above the conversations filling the living room.

"I also have an announcement to make."

The room gradually quieted.

Phil stopped talking in the middle of whatever grandfather title he'd been trying to sell Claire. Cam turned away from Mitchell. Luke and Manny looked toward Gloria, while Lily remained close to Haley.

Claire knew immediately.

Her eyes moved toward Gloria.

Gloria ignored everyone else.

She looked directly at her husband.

Jay's smile slowly faded as he recognized the same expression she'd been giving him all morning.

Gloria took a breath.

"I'm pregnant."
