Chapter 49 - Chapter 49 — The One Who Knows Your Name

They didn't move for a long time after it disappeared.

Not because they couldn't.

But because something about that encounter demanded stillness.

The wind had returned.

The pressure was gone.

The land had sealed itself as if nothing had happened.

But the silence—

That silence felt different now.

Heavier.

Knowing.

Liora stood where the fracture had been, her gaze fixed on empty ground that no longer looked broken. Her fingers were still slightly curled, like she expected the world to split open again at any second.

"…It's gone."

Her voice sounded distant.

Even to herself.

Cairis didn't step away from her.

"…For now."

That answer didn't help.

But it was honest.

She exhaled slowly.

Trying to steady something inside her that hadn't fully settled.

"…It said I'd come back."

"Yes."

"That didn't sound like a possibility."

"No."

A pause.

"…It sounded like a promise."

Silence.

Because they both knew—

It probably was.

Liora turned away from the sealed ground.

Finally.

But her expression hadn't softened.

"…I need answers."

Cairis didn't argue.

"…I know."

"No."

Her voice sharpened slightly.

"…Not guesses. Not assumptions."

Her eyes lifted to meet his.

"…Answers."

Real ones.

Dangerous ones.

The kind that didn't come without consequences.

Cairis studied her for a moment.

"…Then we go somewhere that still remembers."

Liora frowned slightly.

"…The Spirit Realm?"

"No."

A pause.

"…Somewhere worse."

That was not reassuring.

"…You're going to have to be more specific."

Cairis's gaze shifted toward the distant horizon, where the Borderlands fractured into deeper, darker regions.

"…There are places even the Voidbound avoid."

Her expression tightened.

"…That's not helping your case."

"It's not supposed to."

A pause.

"…But if anything knows what that was—"

He looked back at her.

"…It'll be there."

Liora crossed her arms slightly.

Thinking.

Weighing.

"…And you know someone there."

It wasn't a question.

Cairis didn't deny it.

"Yes."

"Someone you don't trust."

"…Yes."

Silence.

Because that told her everything.

"…And we're going anyway."

"Yes."

She let out a slow breath.

"…Of course we are."

They didn't move immediately.

But the decision—

Had already been made.

Then—

A voice cut through the air.

"You're going the wrong way."

Both of them reacted instantly.

Cairis stepped forward.

Power rising.

Liora's silver light flickered faintly—

Controlled.

Ready.

But there was no one there.

At least—

Not where the voice had come from.

"…Show yourself."

Cairis's voice dropped.

Cold.

Sharp.

Silence.

Then—

Movement.

Not from the ground.

Not from the air.

But from the space between.

A figure stepped forward like he had always been there—

Just unnoticed.

The StrangerHe didn't look threatening.

That was the problem.

Tall.

Calm.

Dressed in simple, dark clothing that didn't match any realm's style.

No armor.

No visible weapon.

But his presence—

It didn't belong.

Liora's eyes narrowed immediately.

"…You were hiding."

He tilted his head slightly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…You just weren't ready to see me."

That—

That was worse.

Cairis didn't lower his guard.

"…State your purpose."

The man's gaze shifted between them.

Lingering on Liora.

Longer than necessary.

Then—

"…I'm here because of her."

Of course he was.

Liora stepped forward slightly.

"…Join the line."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"…I'm not here to hunt you."

"That's what they all say."

"Yes."

A pause.

"…I'm just one of the few who doesn't need to lie about it."

Cairis's energy sharpened.

"…Speak clearly."

The man didn't react.

Didn't flinch.

Didn't step back.

"…You're going to the Deep Border."

Liora's expression shifted slightly.

"…And?"

"…You won't survive it."

Silence.

"…That's not new information."

"No."

A pause.

"…But I will."

That—

That got their attention.

Cairis's eyes narrowed.

"…Explain."

The man looked at Liora again.

Not casually.

Not curiously.

But knowingly.

"…Because I've seen you die there before."

Everything stopped.

The wind.

The movement.

The world itself.

Liora's chest tightened sharply.

"…What?"

The man didn't look away.

"…Not like this."

A pause.

"…But close enough."

Fragments.

Again.

Flashes.

Pain.

Darkness.

Falling—

She clenched her hand tightly.

"…You're lying."

"No."

"…Then prove it."

The man studied her for a moment.

Then—

He stepped closer.

Not aggressively.

But without hesitation.

Cairis moved instantly.

Blocking his path.

"…That's far enough."

The man stopped.

Not because he was forced to.

But because he chose to.

"…Fair."

A pause.

Then—

"…Your name isn't Liora."

Silence.

Liora froze.

Her breath caught.

"…What did you say?"

The man's expression didn't change.

"…That's just the name you're using now."

Cairis's presence sharpened dangerously.

"…You're crossing a line."

But the man ignored him.

His gaze locked on Liora.

"…Do you want to hear the name you were given when the world ended?"

The air snapped.

Something inside her reacted instantly.

Not her power.

Not her control.

Something deeper.

Something older.

Her voice came out quieter than she expected.

"…Say it."

Cairis turned sharply toward her.

"…Liora—"

Too late.

The man spoke.

"…Aetheris."

Everything broke.

Not physically.

Not outwardly.

But inside her mind—

Something shattered open.

Light—

Not silver.

Not controlled.

Something vast.

Something endless.

A sky collapsing.

A world tearing itself apart.

A voice—

Her voice—

Saying something she couldn't fully hear—

Then—

Darkness.

Liora staggered.

Her vision blurring violently.

Her breath catching—

Cairis caught her instantly.

"…Liora!"

The man watched.

Carefully.

Closely.

"…See?"

His voice lowered slightly.

"…You remember."

Her fingers tightened weakly against Cairis's arm.

"…That's not my name…"

But the words didn't feel certain.

Didn't feel true.

Because something inside her—

Had answered to it.

The man stepped back slightly.

Giving them space.

But not leaving.

"…Now."

A pause.

"…Do you still want to go alone?"

Silence.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Because now—

This wasn't just about power.

Or survival.

Or control.

This was about who she had been—

And what she had done.

And for the first time—

They had someone who knew.
