Chapter 50 - Chapter 50 — A Name That Should Not Exist

The name didn't fade.

It lingered.

Not in the air—

But inside her.

Aetheris.

Liora's breath came unevenly as the echo of it settled deep within her chest, somewhere her current memories couldn't reach but her instincts refused to deny. Her fingers tightened weakly against Cairis's sleeve, grounding herself in something real, something present.

"…That's not my name."

The words came out quieter this time.

Less certain.

The man watched her carefully.

Not with sympathy.

Not with concern.

But with interest.

"…It wasn't always."

Cairis's presence sharpened immediately.

"…You've said enough."

His voice dropped, cold and controlled, but beneath it was something far more dangerous—warning.

The stranger didn't react.

Didn't flinch.

Didn't step back.

"…You can try to protect her from it," he said calmly, his gaze still on Liora, "but that won't change what she is."

Cairis's power surged.

Crimson energy pressing outward, distorting the air around them.

"…Careful."

For a moment—

It looked like a fight would break out.

But the man simply tilted his head slightly.

Observing.

Measuring.

"…You're strong."

A pause.

"…But not strong enough to stop what's coming."

Silence.

Because that—

That wasn't arrogance.

That was certainty.

Liora steadied herself slowly, pulling away just enough to stand on her own. Her legs still felt unsteady, but her gaze—

Her gaze was sharp again.

Focused.

"…You said you've seen me die."

The man nodded once.

"Yes."

"…Then start talking."

Cairis glanced at her.

"…We don't know if—"

"I know."

She cut him off.

Her voice calm.

Firm.

"…That's exactly why I'm listening."

Silence stretched between them.

Tense.

Unresolved.

Then—

The man exhaled softly.

As if deciding something.

"…You weren't called Liora."

He didn't hesitate this time.

"…Not when the war reached its end."

Her chest tightened again.

"…Then what was I."

A pause.

Not for effect.

But because even he seemed to choose his words carefully.

"…A convergence point."

That wasn't what she expected.

Her brows furrowed slightly.

"…That's not a name."

"No."

A faint tilt of his head.

"…It's what you became."

The wind shifted slightly.

Colder now.

"…All power—demonic, celestial, spiritual—began collapsing into one point."

His gaze didn't leave her.

"…You."

Cairis's expression darkened.

"…That's impossible."

"No."

The man's voice didn't rise.

Didn't argue.

"…It's exactly what happened."

Liora's mind struggled to keep up.

Fragments flickering again.

Power surging beyond control.

Not just hers—

Everything.

Pulled toward her.

"…I didn't choose that."

The words came out instinctively.

Defensive.

The man's eyes flickered.

"…No."

A pause.

"…But you didn't stop it either."

That—

That hit harder.

Cairis stepped forward.

"…That's enough."

But Liora didn't look away.

Didn't retreat.

"…And the world breaking?"

Her voice lowered.

"…That was because of me too?"

The man was silent for a moment.

Long enough to matter.

"…Partly."

Not fully.

Not completely.

But not innocent either.

Liora exhaled slowly.

Her chest tightening.

"…You're not telling me everything."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"…Of course not."

Cairis's eyes narrowed sharply.

"…Why."

The man finally looked at him directly.

For the first time.

"…Because truth is dangerous."

A pause.

"…And you're not ready for all of it."

That answer—

That answer confirmed everything.

Liora crossed her arms slightly.

"…Or you just don't want to give it."

"That too."

At least he was honest.

Silence settled again.

But it wasn't the same as before.

Now—

It was calculated.

Measured.

"…You said I died in the Deep Border."

She stepped forward slightly.

"…How?"

The man's gaze returned to her.

Studying.

Evaluating.

"…You didn't lose control."

That made her pause.

"…You chose it."

The words landed heavier than anything else.

Cairis's expression sharpened instantly.

"…Explain."

The man didn't respond immediately.

Then—

"…You realized what you were becoming."

A pause.

"…And what it would cost."

Liora's breathing slowed.

Not from calm.

But from focus.

"…So I ended it."

The man nodded slightly.

"…You tried."

That—

That wasn't reassuring.

"…Tried?"

His expression didn't change.

"…Something stopped you."

The air shifted again.

Subtly.

But enough.

Cairis's voice dropped.

"…What."

The man's gaze flickered briefly toward the distance—

Toward where the fracture had been.

"…That."

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

Liora's chest tightened again.

"…The thing from earlier?"

"Yes."

Her mind raced.

Trying to piece it together.

"…It remembers me because—"

"…It was there."

Everything clicked.

Not fully.

But enough to be dangerous.

"…It didn't just watch."

Her voice lowered.

"…It interfered."

The man didn't confirm it directly.

But he didn't deny it either.

"…You're starting to understand."

Cairis's expression hardened.

"…And your role in all this?"

The man smiled slightly.

But there was no warmth in it.

"…Observer."

A pause.

"…Occasional participant."

That—

That was worse than an enemy.

"…You let it happen."

The accusation came sharp.

Direct.

He didn't deny it.

"…I didn't stop it."

Silence.

Liora stared at him.

Really looked at him now.

Not as a stranger.

Not as a guide.

But as something else entirely.

"…You're not here to help me."

The man tilted his head slightly.

"…I didn't say that."

"…Then what are you here for?"

A pause.

Then—

"…To see what you choose this time."

That answer settled cold.

Because it meant one thing.

He wasn't on their side.

But he wasn't against them either.

He was watching.

Waiting.

For her to decide something—

That even she didn't fully understand yet.

Liora exhaled slowly.

Then—

"…You're coming with us."

Cairis turned sharply.

"…No."

The man raised an eyebrow slightly.

"…That's unexpected."

Liora didn't look at him.

Didn't hesitate.

"…You know too much."

A pause.

"…And I don't trust you."

Silence.

"…But I need answers."

The man smiled again.

Slightly wider this time.

"…That's the right decision."

Cairis's voice dropped.

Dangerous.

"…If you try anything—"

"I won't."

A pause.

"…Unless it becomes necessary."

That—

That didn't help.

But it was honest.

And somehow—

That made it worse.

The wind picked up again.

Stronger.

Colder.

Three figures stood at the edge of the broken world.

Bound not by trust.

Not by loyalty.

But by something far more dangerous.

Purpose.

And somewhere far beyond them—

Something ancient waited.

Because this time—

The story wouldn't end the same way.
