Chapter 5 - The Awakening

Chapter 5

The creature's wings spread across the clearing, blocking out the moonlight.

Ariana had never seen anything like it. Its form was humanoid, but dark feathers covered its shoulders and arms like armor. Massive wings curved behind it, stretching wide enough to dominate the entire clearing. Its silver eyes glowed cold and steady, fixed directly on her.

Ariana's breath trembled. "What is that?" she whispered.

Kael stepped slightly in front of her without hesitation, his body instinctively shielding hers. "A problem."

The creature tilted its head, studying them with unsettling calm.

"Alpha Vaughn," it said.

Its voice carried across the clearing, low and controlled, but powerful enough to silence everything around them.

"You should step aside."

Kael's muscles tightened. "That's not happening."

Behind them, the council hunters poured out of the broken house, spreading across the clearing as torches flickered in the wind. The tension thickened instantly.

Cassian stepped forward, clearly intrigued, his expression relaxed despite the chaos. "Well," he murmured, "that's unexpected."

The winged creature did not even look at him.

"We are not here for the council."

Its glowing gaze remained locked on Ariana.

"We are here for the Fifth Blood."

Ariana felt Kael's grip tighten slightly around her wrist.

"Who are you?" Kael demanded.

The creature studied him for a moment before answering.

"A name your kind once knew. We were called Guardians."

Kael's expression darkened. "That title died centuries ago."

"Did it?" the creature replied calmly.

Ariana's heart pounded harder. Everything was happening too fast. Hunters, vampires, and now this… creature. All of them were focused on her. The creature took a slow step forward.

"The Fifth Blood must come with us."

Kael didn't move. "No."

The creature's eyes narrowed slightly. "You misunderstand, Alpha. This is not a request."

Kael's wolf surged beneath the surface. "Try."

The clearing went silent.

Cassian let out a quiet chuckle from the side, clearly enjoying the situation. "Oh, this is getting interesting."

He leaned casually against a tree.

"The council wants her dead. You want to take her. And the Alpha refuses both."

His red eyes gleamed. "I'm curious how this ends."

The creature ignored him again. Its attention remained on Ariana.

"You feel it, don't you?" it said.

Ariana froze.

The light beneath her skin pulsed again, stronger this time, reacting to the creature's presence.

"I don't know what you're talking about," she said, her voice unsteady.

"You do," the creature replied calmly. "You are the Fifth Blood. You were always meant to awaken."

Ariana shook her head. "No."

"Yes."

Its tone didn't change.

"The balance of this world is breaking, and you are the key to restoring it."

Kael stepped forward again. "She's not going anywhere with you."

The creature finally looked at him. "You cannot protect her forever."

"Watch me."

For a moment, neither of them moved. Then the creature sighed. "Very well."

Its wings lifted slightly.

"We tried diplomacy."

It moved. Ariana barely saw it happen. One moment it stood several feet away. The next, it was right in front of her.

She gasped.

Kael lunged instantly, but the creature was faster. Its hand closed around Ariana's wrist.

The moment their skin touched, everything changed.

Light exploded across the clearing.

Ariana screamed as power surged through her body, sharp and overwhelming. Wind roared outward, extinguishing every torch at once. The hunters stumbled backward, and even Cassian took a step away.

"What is this?" someone shouted.

The creature froze, its silver eyes widening. "The power…" it whispered.

Ariana cried out as the energy tore through her veins. It felt like something inside her was breaking open.

Kael grabbed her shoulders. "Ariana!"

The ground trembled. Trees bent under the force of the wind. The light beneath Ariana's skin spread rapidly, moving up her arms, across her chest, and toward her heart.

The creature released her immediately. "This shouldn't be happening."

Kael pulled her behind him. "What did you do to her?"

"I did nothing," the creature said, still staring at Ariana.

Cassian's voice cut through the chaos.

"Well…"

He stepped forward slowly, his expression shifting from amusement to fascination.

"That explains everything."

Kael turned sharply. "Explains what?"

Cassian smiled. "The prophecy."

Ariana barely heard him. The power inside her was growing stronger, harder to control.

"What prophecy?" Kael demanded.

"The one the council buried," Cassian replied.

He looked directly at Ariana.

"The Fifth Blood does not awaken alone."

Kael went still. "What does that mean?"

Cassian's smile deepened. "It means you're already too late."

Ariana's breath shook. "Too late for what?"

Cassian's voice dropped. "For the bond."

Kael's heart slammed against his ribs. "What bond?"

Cassian's expression turned sharp. "The one forming right now."

Kael turned toward Ariana. And then he saw it. The silver light in her veins flickered, then shifted. The color changed, deepening into gold. The same gold as his eyes.

Kael's wolf roared inside his mind.

"No…" he whispered.

Cassian straightened slightly. "Well… that's new."

The golden light burst outward again, throwing everyone backward.

When the light faded, silence followed.

Cassian slowly stood, his expression no longer amused.

"Well…"

Kael looked up.His blood ran cold.

Ariana was no longer on the ground. She was floating. Golden light surrounded her, steady and powerful.

When she opened her eyes, they were no longer human. They were gold.

The light was bright, unnatural, and ancient.

Cassian took a slow step back. "The prophecy…" he murmured.

Kael stared at her, something shifting deep inside him. Because for the first time since meeting her, his wolf did not say mate.

It said,

Queen.
