Chapter 8
The clearing fell into complete silence. No one moved, and no one even seemed to breathe.
Ariana hovered above the ground again, surrounded by bright golden light. The energy spread around her, strong and difficult to control, slightly distorting the air. Behind her, a large shape formed from the light, resembling wings, while above her head, a crown of fire burned steadily.
Cassian stared upward. "Well," he said quietly, "that's definitely new."
Even the hunters looked uncertain now.
The High Alpha slowly released Kael. The massive white wolf stepped back, its blue eyes still fixed on Ariana.
Kael dropped briefly to one knee before shifting back into human form. Blood ran down the side of his neck where the High Alpha's fangs had grazed him, but he ignored it. His focus remained on Ariana.
"Ariana…" he said.
She didn't respond.
Her golden eyes burned brighter than before. They were no longer wild or uncontrolled. They were focused, steady, and unsettling. The power around her spread across the clearing, and every creature felt it.
The winged guardian stepped forward slowly, its silver eyes filled with shock. "It's real," it said.
Cassian glanced at it. "What is?"
The guardian lowered its voice. "The Sovereign."
The word spread through the clearing, and several hunters stiffened. Even the High Alpha's expression darkened.
"That title was erased centuries ago," he said.
The guardian kept its eyes on Ariana. "Apparently not."
Ariana felt something shift inside her mind.Voices began to rise, faint at first, then louder. They weren't clear, but they were there.
Images followed. Cities she had never seen. Battles she did not remember. Creatures kneeling before someone surrounded by golden light.
Her chest tightened. "What is happening to me?"
The wings behind her flickered.
Kael stepped closer, careful. "You're awakening."
"I don't want this," she said.
"You don't get to choose this… but you won't face it alone."he replied quietly.
The High Alpha stepped forward in human form, his presence heavy as he studied her.
"If this is true," he said, "then everything we believed about the Fifth Blood is wrong."
Cassian crossed his arms. "Not wrong," he said. "Just incomplete."
The High Alpha turned toward him. "Explain."
Cassian shrugged. "According to the oldest records, the Fifth Blood was never just a bloodline."
He gestured toward Ariana. "It was a throne."
The guardian nodded once. "A throne meant to rule all supernatural races."
Murmurs spread across the clearing.
"That throne was destroyed," the High Alpha said.
Cassian smiled slightly. "Apparently not."
Ariana's breathing became uneven. "I don't want to rule anyone."
The guardian stepped closer. "You don't have a choice."
The crown above her head burned brighter.
"You were born for it."
Kael moved instantly. "She's not ruling anything."
The guardian looked at him. "You cannot stop destiny."
"Watch me."
The High Alpha studied Kael. "You're willing to challenge the entire council for her?"
"Yes."
The answer came without hesitation. The hunters shifted again, uneasy.
Cassian let out a quiet laugh. "This keeps getting better."
Then the golden light around Ariana flickered. The wings behind her trembled. Her breathing became uneven again.
Kael stepped forward immediately. "Ariana?"
Her body shook as the voices inside her mind grew louder.
Too loud.
"I can't…" she said weakly.
Kael moved closer. "Look at me."
Her eyes shifted toward him, and fear showed clearly on her face.
"Kael… I can't control it."
A sharp cracking sound echoed as the crown above her head began to break.
The guardian's expression darkened. "That's not good."
The light around her suddenly pulled inward. Ariana screamed. Energy burst outward across the clearing.
Kael ran toward her. "Ariana!"
He reached her just as the light began to expand again. For a brief moment, their eyes met. Then the energy exploded.
A powerful shockwave tore through the clearing. Trees snapped, hunters were thrown back, and even the High Alpha lost his footing.
Then everything went quiet. When the light faded, Ariana was gone.
The clearing fell silent again.
Kael looked around, panic rising. "No…"
The guardian stepped forward, scanning the empty space. "She's not here."
Cassian raised an eyebrow. "That's inconvenient."
Kael turned sharply. "Where is she?"
The guardian looked toward the sky, its expression serious. "She didn't disappear."
Kael's chest tightened. "Then where did she go?" The guardian spoke quietly. "She was taken."
The High Alpha's eyes narrowed. "By who?" The guardian looked directly at him. "The ones who have been waiting for the Sovereign to awaken."
Kael's stomach dropped. "Who?"
The guardian's wings shifted slowly.
"The original bloodline."
The clearing went silent.
Cassian blinked. "That bloodline is extinct."
The guardian shook its head. "No."
It paused, then said quietly,
"They've been hiding."
"And now they have her."
