The walk to the convenience store was painfully silent.
Zi Han's mind scrambled for something, anything, just anything to say. A topic, a question, even a simple comment about the weather would have been better than this suffocating quiet. But every time she opened her mouth, the words seemed to dissolve before they could form.
It didn't help that Shi Xian's expression from earlier kept replaying in her mind.
She had apologized quickly before leaving with Yu Wuxian, but it had been obvious he wasn't happy. Or perhaps "unhappy" wasn't the right word. He had looked… puzzled. As if he couldn't quite understand why she had suddenly chosen someone else.
The memory made her chest tighten slightly.
"Would you like a cupcake?"
Yu Wuxian's voice broke the silence.
Zi Han blinked and looked over. Yu Wuxian had already opened a small pastry box she had bought and was holding out a neatly frosted cupcake.
"Um… yeah," Zi Han said, a little startled. "Thank you."
