The shadows of the Void stirred long before Juno appeared. She stepped through the darkness with a cold, lethal grace. She didn't offer a smile or a comforting word. She ignored her other siblings, her gaze fixed only on Koa. To Juno, only power determined who stood above the rest. She was prepared to prove she was the superior flame.
"Follow me," Juno commanded. Her tone left no room for questions. Koa lowered her head and followed the girl into the gloom.
They reached a wide expanse where the floor felt like solid shadow. Juno turned around, her gaze piercing Koa's soul.
"Show me your fire," Juno said. Her voice echoed in the empty space. "Release the full extent of your power. Release your yan and yen and show me everything you have. I was sent back to train my master's younger sister and I have no intention of being soft. I am going to break you. I am going to give you the same rigorous training my master gave me until there is nothing left of the girl you used to be."
Koa took a breath, her hands trembling as she tried to summon the heat from within. Juno watched with predatory stillness.
"If you cannot even stand before me without shaking then you have already lost. My master did not accept weakness and neither will I. If you want to survive you will learn to burn through the pain or you will be consumed by it. Now show me what you are or step aside and let the darkness take you. I want to see the yan and the yen. I want to see the core of what you are hiding."
She would not stop until the fire in Koa was either extinguished or turned into a roar.
A few clicks out from the doctor's residence, the air was different. It was heavy with the scent of pine and old wood. Kota's eyes fluttered open to a low wooden ceiling. The light was soft. Early morning. To his surprise, the leaden weight in his chest was gone. He didn't feel the sting of his wounds or the exhaustion from the battle. He felt restored. He couldn't understand how his body had repaired itself so quickly.
"Where am I?" Kota whispered. His voice was surprisingly clear. He looked around the small room, trying to piece together the journey through the settlement. "What happened?"
A shadow moved by the bedside. Leiya was leaning over him. Her face was pale and dark circles sat under her eyes, but she managed a small, relieved smile.
"Kota? You're awake," Leiya said. Her voice trembled with relief. "You gave us a scare. We found a place to hide while you recover. Just stay still."
Leiya gestured toward the hallway. A young woman and her older brother stood watching the doorway. They looked haggard, their clothes torn and stained from the raid.
"These are the people you saved in the settlement. This is Mira and her brother Thorne. They know this area very well because they live out here. They helped us reach this spot so you could rest. They're in the same situation as us with nowhere left to go because the raiders destroyed everything they had."
Kota looked past Leiya toward the siblings, his brow furrowing.
"Why are they here?" Kota asked. "How can someone I saved save me?"
As Leiya spoke, the memory of the previous night began to surface. Earlier in the evening, right after Kota had driven off the raiders, Mira had looked at Thorne with wide, terrified eyes.
"We should follow them," Mira had whispered urgently. "That guy might need our help, Thorne. He saved us from those raiders. We cannot just let them go off on their own after what he did for us."
Thorne had looked at the smoking ruins then back at the pair walking toward the outskirts.
"You're right," Thorne had replied.
They had followed at a distance, keeping them in sight as the night took a darker turn. They were trailing behind when the confrontation with Kova happened. They watched from the shadows as the battle unfolded. Only when the dark figures vanished did they emerge. They saw Kota unconscious on the floor and rushed in to help Leiya lift him. They guided them to this hidden area. It was a lonely, empty place.
Leiya looked back at Kota, her eyes widening as she noticed him sitting up without effort.
"You're moving? You were half dead when we carried you here."
Kota looked at his hands, feeling an unsettling surge of energy beneath his skin. He didn't know why he was standing or why the pain had vanished, but he could feel that something was different. He looked at Mira and Thorne, then back at Leiya.
He was alive and restored, but the chase was far from over. The house was quiet, but the world outside was still searching. Shadows were getting longer. He knew they couldn't stay here long, but for the first time in days, the screaming in his mind had gone quiet.
He looked at the window. He wondered how much time they really had before the peace was shattered once again.
