Chapter 7: Shadows on the Road

The wind had shifted. It carried the scent of smoke and something acrid—like iron and decay. Kael's eyes narrowed, scanning the darkness ahead. The road stretched endlessly toward the Blackstone Mountains, each step pulling him deeper into uncertainty.

Beside him, the cloaked woman walked silently. Her presence was steady, a quiet anchor against the storm of chaos building inside Kael. Yet even she cast glances over her shoulder, alert to every movement in the shadows.

"They're close," she said finally, voice low. "You can feel them too, can't you?"

Kael nodded. The hairs on his arms stood on end. Beneath his skin, faint lines pulsed like veins of molten light. The creatures had not forgotten him, he realized—they were tracking him, waiting for the next opportunity.

A low rustle came from the forest lining the road. Kael stiffened.

"Show yourself!" he shouted, trying to keep his voice steady.

Silence.

Then—a scream, sharp and unnatural, split the air.

From the shadows, a figure appeared. Not one, but three, emerging like wraiths from the dark. Their faces were hidden beneath hoods, but the gleam of blades in their hands caught the dim starlight.

Kael's heart sank.

Not creatures… humans.

"Prophecy hunters," the woman whispered. "They know. They're here to claim you before the Forgotten fully awakens."

The lead figure stepped forward, a man whose movements were precise, trained. "The heir walks alone," he said, voice ringing with authority. "Step aside, or you die with him."

Kael's fists clenched. The energy inside him flared instinctively. Pale light flickered across his arms, surging outward like liquid fire. The hunters froze.

"You don't understand," Kael said, voice trembling. "I'm not… I'm not what you think I am."

The man's lips curved into a thin, cruel smile. "Oh, we understand perfectly. You are the last hope of the Forgotten, and we will stop you before it's too late."

Kael felt the pull again—stronger than ever. The road, the wind, the distant mountains… all of it thrummed in rhythm with the power inside him.

They're testing me.

The hunters lunged. Kael barely had time to react. Energy erupted from his hands, forming jagged arcs of light that slammed into the attackers. One fell to the ground with a scream, clutching his chest as smoke rose from his body.

The others paused, but only for a heartbeat.

Then they attacked again, faster, more coordinated. Kael moved instinctively, letting the power flow through him. The lines under his skin flared brighter, his senses sharpening. Every step, every motion, felt amplified—as if his body were no longer his own.

And it wasn't.

Something ancient, something hungry, whispered in his mind:

Strike. Claim. Show them who you are.

Kael shook his head, struggling to maintain control. "No… not like that!" he shouted, forcing his will against the surge of power.

The lead hunter's blade came down. Kael sidestepped barely in time, energy snapping outward, throwing the man backward. Sparks of light danced across the ground like fireflies.

The woman stepped forward, chanting low, strange words that made the air ripple. Shadows twisted around her hands, forming barriers that slowed the attackers.

"You cannot hold them all," she warned. "Control your power, Kael—or it will consume you before the fight even begins."

Kael's hands glowed fiercely. He drew in a deep breath, focusing—not on destroying, but on containing. The energy contracted, coiling like a serpent beneath his skin, responding to his command for the first time with obedience instead of chaos.

A flash of light shot from him, and the hunters were thrown back, tumbling to the side, wounded but alive.

Kael fell to his knees, gasping. His skin burned where the energy pulsed, and he felt a strange exhilaration mingle with fear.

The woman knelt beside him. "Good. That was only a taste. You have much to learn. And many more will come."

Kael looked up, his glowing eyes meeting hers. "I… I can't let them stop me. I have to reach the mountains."

Her face softened slightly, though her expression remained serious. "Then we move.

Every step from now on will be a test. And the road ahead is full of shadows—both human and otherwise."

Kael rose unsteadily. Behind him, the hunters stirred, watching him with suspicion and fear. They would follow, he knew. Others would come.

But something had changed.

The Forgotten inside him was no longer just a whisper. It was awake.

And it was listening.
