Chapter 6: The First Test

Kael staggered back, his glowing hands trembling violently. The creatures—the twisted forms of bone and shadow—had stopped at his presence, their glowing eyes fixed entirely on him.

They hissed softly, almost reverently, like worshippers of a god they barely understood.

The woman standing beside him lowered her hand slowly, her silver-emblazoned cloak brushing the dirt of the road. Her gaze never left Kael.

"You need to control it," she said, voice low but urgent. "Or it will destroy you before you even reach the mountains."

"I can't control it!" Kael shouted, fear and frustration cracking his voice. "I don't know what it is!"

The creatures moved as one, stepping closer—but not to attack. They circled him, keeping just enough distance to remind him of their power.

"It's part of you," she said. "The power of the Forgotten flows through your blood. You are the heir, Kael. And they know it. That is why they obeyed your presence… and why they will test you."

Kael's pulse raced. "Test me? By what?"

Before the woman could answer, a shrill, ear-piercing screech ripped through the air. The creatures stiffened, their forms shimmering unnaturally. Shadows twisted around Kael, tightening like smoke around a candle flame.

Something emerged from the darkness of the trees—the first real test.

A single creature, larger than the rest, stepped forward. Its body was jagged, twisted, and far more defined than the others. Its eyes burned with a deep, red intelligence. It crouched low, its maw dripping black ichor.

"You must face it," the woman said, her voice calm but firm. "Or the Forgotten will claim you, not control you."

Kael swallowed hard. His hands flared with light, the glow spreading up his arms in violent streaks. The creatures around him hissed again, bowing slightly, waiting.

The large creature lunged. Kael barely had time to react. He raised his hands instinctively—and the energy surged forward, a shockwave of pure force that slammed into the creature, sending it crashing into the dirt.

But it didn't die.

It rose again, faster this time, snarling, its eyes locked onto him.

Kael stumbled backward, trying to understand the strange connection. Every motion of the creature seemed linked to his own fear, his own uncertainty.

"Focus," the woman said, stepping closer. "You feel it in your blood, don't you? That pull—the power is responding to your will, but your mind is still weak. Control it. Control yourself."

Kael clenched his fists. The glow beneath his skin flared brighter, the heat searing into his veins. He could feel the Forgotten stirring within him, a presence ancient and impatient.

He took a deep breath, forcing his fear aside. Slowly, deliberately, he willed the energy in his body to calm, to flow instead of explode.

The creature froze mid-lunge. Its eyes blinked. Its head tilted.

Kael raised his hands. This time, the energy responded—flowing outward in controlled waves, not jagged bursts. The ground quaked slightly underfoot, and the creature shrieked, then sank to its knees, lowering its head.

The surrounding creatures bowed deeper. Kael's heart pounded, but for the first time, he felt… in command.

The woman smiled faintly. "Good. This is only the beginning. Each test will be harder, each challenge closer to what awaits in the mountains. But you will learn… or the Forgotten will consume you."

Kael lowered his hands slowly. The glow faded, leaving faint lines beneath his skin that pulsed gently, like embers waiting to ignite.

"I—what happens now?" he asked, voice barely steady.

The woman turned, eyes toward the distant mountains where black peaks clawed at the sky. "Now… we continue. The road ahead is long, Kael. And the first echoes of what sleeps in the Blackstone Mountains are already stirring. We must reach the ancient shrine before the others awaken fully."

Kael nodded, though fear still gnawed at his stomach. Behind him, the creatures receded into the shadows, waiting, watching—but no longer attacking.

He took a step forward, then another. The road ahead was dark, the wind carrying whispers he could not understand.

But he walked.

And somewhere deep within him, the Forgotten stirred, aware, impatient… and hungry.
