Chapter 17: The Silence Between Powers

The battlefield roared with energy.

Light clashed with shadow. Force bent against suppression. The mountain itself trembled under the weight of conflicting resonance.

And in the middle of it all—

There was silence.

Dain moved again.

No glow.

No pulse.

No visible power.

Yet every step he took…

Something stopped.

An Order soldier swung at him—blade charged with Veil energy.

Dain didn't block.

Didn't dodge.

He simply touched the blade.

The light vanished.

Not deflected.

Not absorbed.

Gone.

The soldier froze in shock—

Just long enough.

Dain's strike was clean.

Precise.

Final.

Kael saw it.

And for the first time since awakening—

He felt something that wasn't fear…

Confusion.

"What… is that?" he muttered.

Seris, holding back two attackers with a wave of pressure, answered without looking at him:

"That…"

A pause.

"…shouldn't exist."

Across the battlefield, even Vaelor had stopped moving.

His eyes locked onto Dain.

"…So it's true," Vaelor said quietly.

Lyra followed his gaze.

Her expression hardened.

"You shouldn't have come," she said under her breath.

Dain didn't respond.

Another soldier rushed him—

This time faster.

Stronger.

Dain stepped forward.

And the world around him—

dimmed.

Not darker.

Not colder.

Just… empty.

The soldier's energy flickered—

Then died.

His body collapsed mid-motion, as if the force animating him had been cut away.

A ripple spread outward from Dain.

Kael felt it.

And it terrified him.

The Forgotten inside him—

Recoiled.

"What was that?" Kael said, stepping back instinctively.

Lyra answered this time.

"…Null Resonance."

The words landed heavy.

"Resonance is connection," she continued. "To the Veil. To nature. To the Forgotten."

Her eyes didn't leave Dain.

"But he…"

A pause.

"…is the absence of it."

Kael's chest tightened.

"So he cancels it?" he asked.

"No," Seris corrected, forcing an enemy back.

"He erases it."

Silence hit harder than any explosion.

Even the Order hesitated now.

Vaelor stepped forward slowly.

"You are a mistake," he said.

Dain finally spoke.

"Everything is," he replied calmly.

Then he moved.

Fast.

Not like Riven.

Not like Lyra.

Faster.

Cleaner.

He passed through the battlefield like a shadow cutting through light.

Wherever he went—

Power died.

Formations collapsed.

Energy shattered.

Even the Veil itself flickered.

Vaelor raised his hand.

"Veil Lock."

A dense field of suppressive energy formed instantly around him—stronger than anything used before.

Dain stepped into it.

And it cracked.

For the first time—

Vaelor's composure broke.

"…Impossible."

Dain's hand touched the Veil.

It unraveled.

Like it had never existed.

Kael stared.

"That power…" he whispered.

Lyra stepped beside him.

"It's older than the Veil," she said.

Kael turned to her. "Older?"

She nodded.

"Before the Veil was created… before the Forgotten was sealed…"

Her voice dropped slightly.

"There was balance."

The battlefield seemed to quiet as she spoke.

"Resonance existed in harmony. No suppression. No domination."

Her gaze shifted toward the mountains.

"Then the Forgotten King rose."

Kael's chest tightened.

"He didn't just wield power," she continued.

"He consumed it. Bent it. Rewrote it."

A pause.

"And the world broke trying to contain him."

Kael swallowed.

"The Veil was created to stop that," he said slowly.

"Yes."

"And the Devourers?"

Lyra's expression darkened.

"They were his answer to resistance."

Kael looked toward the distant peaks.

"Then what is Dain?"

Silence.

Even Lyra hesitated.

Finally—

"…A correction," she said.

Kael blinked.

"What does that mean?"

She didn't answer.

Because Dain had reached Vaelor.

The two stood face to face.

One radiating absolute control.

The other—

Nothing at all.

Vaelor drew his blade.

"For the first time," he said, "you are worth killing personally."

Dain tilted his head slightly.

"For the first time," he replied…

"You're afraid."

Vaelor struck.

Dain didn't block.

He stepped in.

Hand raised—

And everything went silent.

No sound.

No light.

No energy.

Just one moment—

Where the world itself seemed to pause.

Then—

Vaelor was thrown back.

Not violently.

Not explosively.

Simply… removed.

He slid across the stone, stopping at the edge of the battlefield.

Alive.

But shaken.

The Order fell back instantly, regrouping around him.

Vaelor rose slowly.

His gaze moved from Dain…

To Kael.

"…This changes nothing," he said.

But his voice had lost something.

Certainty.

"We will meet again."

A pause.

"And next time…"

His eyes hardened.

"There will be no interference."

He raised his hand.

The remaining soldiers withdrew instantly.

Gone into the mountain paths.

Just like that—

The battlefield ended.

Silence returned.

Real silence this time.

Kael stood still, trying to process everything.

The Devourers.

The Veil.

The Forgotten King.

Dain.

"…What kind of world is this?" he asked quietly.

Lyra looked toward the distant horizon.

"A broken one," she said.

Riven sheathed his blades. "Yeah. And it's about to get worse."

Seris nodded. "The seals are weakening faster now.

That Lord… it wasn't just watching."

Kael clenched his fists.

"It was waiting."

Dain walked past them.

No sound.

No presence.

But his voice came quietly:

"Not waiting."

He stopped.

"…Preparing."

The wind carried his words into the mountains.

And far below—

Something ancient shifted.

The game had changed.

And Kael was no longer just part of it.

He was becoming the center of it.
