Chapter 30: What He Let Go
The second attempt didn't begin gently.
It never would again.
"Stand."
Kade's voice cut through the fractured air.
Kael was already on his feet.
Bruised.
Breathing heavy.
But ready.
Or at least
Willing.
The terrain around them had grown more unstable. The floating stone fragments moved faster now, drifting in erratic patterns. The air pulsed unevenly, like something unseen was dragging at the edges of reality.
"…You're increasing it," Kael said, narrowing his eyes.
Kade didn't deny it.
"Yes."
A pause.
"You adapt faster under pressure."
Kael exhaled slowly.
"Or I break faster."
Kade's gaze didn't waver.
"Same thing."
Before Kael could respond
The world shifted violently.
Not just around him
Through him.
The ground disappeared beneath his feet.
Gravity twisted sideways.
His body was thrown
Hard.
But this time
Kael didn't try to stop it.
Not immediately.
He let the motion carry him.
Rotated mid-air.
Adjusted.
And landed.
Sliding.
But still upright.
"…Better," Kade said.
Kael steadied himself.
His breathing uneven.
His mind racing.
Don't control it…
Don't force it…
Another shift
Stronger.
Kael's body lifted again
Pulled upward this time
Then dropped suddenly.
His instincts screamed.
Stop it.
His power surged.
And for a split second.
He almost forced it.
Almost.
Then.
Something else surfaced.
Not power.
Not instinct.
Memory.
A younger Kael.
Falling.
Not from the sky.
From a cliff.
Loose stone breaking beneath his feet.
His body tumbling
His hands grasping at nothing
The panic
The desperation
Control it.
Grab something.
Stop
He remembered what happened.
He didn't stop it.
He hit the ground.
Hard.
Broken.
Powerless.
Kael's eyes snapped open.
The present crashed back in
The fractured world
The falling
The instability
But the feeling stayed.
That moment.
That helplessness.
"…I hate this," he muttered under his breath.
The ground shifted again
This time violently enough to tear the air apart.
Kael's body was thrown sideways
No footing
No balance
Nothing to control
And that's when it hit him.
Not the ground.
The realization.
I couldn't control it then.
And I can't control this now.
Silence.
Not outside.
Inside.
Kael exhaled.
Slow.
And for the first time
He stopped trying.
Not resisting.
Not guiding.
Not controlling.
Letting go.
The world didn't stabilize.
It didn't calm.
It didn't change.
He did.
His body moved with the shifts
Not reacting
Not predicting
Flowing.
Freely.
Naturally.
Like he wasn't separate from it anymore.
The force pulled
He turned with it.
The ground vanished
He stepped onto what replaced it.
Gravity twisted
He followed.
Not perfectly.
But without resistance.
Without fear.
Kade's eyes narrowed slightly.
"…There it is," he said quietly.
Kael landed again.
This time
Effortlessly.
No stumble.
No strain.
Just… there.
He looked at his hands.
The resonance was still there.
Strong.
But different.
Not something he held.
Something that moved with him.
"…I didn't control it," he said.
Kade stepped forward slowly.
"No."
A pause.
"You stopped needing to."
Kael looked up.
"…Is this it?"
Kade studied him.
Longer this time.
"…No."
Kael blinked. "Of course not."
A faint shift in Kade's expression.
"Now we see if you can use it."
Before Kael could respond
Kade moved.
Fast.
Not like before.
Faster.
Direct.
Kael barely reacted
But this time
He didn't force a defense.
He let the movement happen
His body shifted
Kade's strike passed by
Close.
Too close.
But missed.
Kael's eyes widened.
"…I didn't even think"
"That's the point."
Kade struck again.
Sharper.
More precise.
Kael moved
Not perfectly
But instinctively.
Flowing around the attack.
Not blocking.
Not dodging.
Becoming part of the movement.
Kade's next strike landed
But not clean.
Kael's body absorbed part of the motion
Redirected it
Less damage.
Less impact.
Kade stepped back.
Watching evaluating.
"…Interesting."
Kael steadied himself.
"…You sound surprised."
"I am."
That wasn't something Kade said lightly.
They circled each other slowly.
The fractured world shifting around them.
But Kael
Moved with it.
Not perfectly.
But naturally.
"You learned faster than expected," Kade said.
Kael smirked slightly.
"Don't sound so impressed."
Kade's gaze sharpened.
"I'm not impressed."
A pause.
"I'm concerned."
Kael frowned. "That's worse."
Kade stepped forward again.
This time
No restraint.
His hand moved
And that same absence
That same void-like presence
Surged toward Kael.
Kael felt it instantly.
Different from everything else.
Not unstable.
Not chaotic.
Nothing.
A space where everything stopped.
His instincts screamed
But this time
He didn't react with force.
He let go.
Moved.
Flowed
And slipped past it.
Barely.
But enough.
Kade stopped.
Completely.
For the first time
There was something in his expression.
Not surprise.
Not curiosity.
Recognition.
"…You're dangerous," he said.
Kael blinked.
"…That's new."
Kade straightened.
"You adapted to something you don't understand," he said.
A pause.
"And you did it by letting go."
Kael exhaled slowly.
"…That's what you wanted, right?"
Kade shook his head slightly.
"No."
A beat.
"That's what I needed to confirm."
Silence.
Kael's eyes narrowed.
"…Confirm what?"
Kade turned slightly, looking toward the distance
Toward the direction of the fractured titan.
"…That you might survive what's coming."
Behind them
The ground pulsed again.
Stronger.
Closer.
And this time
Kael didn't feel overwhelmed.
He felt ready.
Not fully.
Not completely.
But enough to face it.
Kade glanced back at him one last time.
"…We're not done," he said.
Kael smirked faintly.
"Wouldn't expect we were."
The training had changed.
And so had Kael.
