Chapter 35: The Things She Doesn't See
Lira never stood still.
Even now.
Even when Kade called her forward
She didn't walk.
She drifted.
Light on her feet, movements effortless, like she was always half a step ahead of the world around her. Her frame was lean, built for speed rather than strength, every motion precise without looking like it required effort.
A blade flicked between her fingers.
Casual.
Comfortable.
Like it belonged there.
"…My turn, huh?" she said with a half-smile.
Kade watched her.
"Yes."
She spun the dagger once more, then caught it.
"Try not to break me too badly," she added.
Kade didn't respond.
But there was something different in his gaze this time.
Focused.
Careful.
Lira noticed.
"…What?" she asked.
A pause.
"You're the hardest one here to teach," Kade said.
Her smile widened slightly.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"It's not."
That wiped the smile away.
Just a little.
Kade stepped forward.
"You rely on speed," he said.
Lira shrugged.
"Works pretty well."
"For now."
A pause.
"But speed isn't the problem."
Lira tilted her head slightly.
"…Then what is?"
Kade met her eyes.
"You don't see enough."
Silence.
Lira scoffed lightly.
"I see more than most people here."
"Not when it matters."
That hit.
Not hard.
But deep.
Lira's grip on the dagger tightened slightly.
"…Alright," she said.
"Show me."
Kade didn't move immediately.
Instead
The world around them shifted.
Not violently.
Subtly.
The terrain blurred.
Not fully
Just enough.
Edges softened.
Depth distorted.
Movement became harder to track.
"…Oh, I hate this already," Lira muttered.
"Good," Kade said.
Then
He moved.
Fast.
Lira reacted instantly
She stepped aside
Clean.
Perfect.
His strike missed completely.
She smirked.
"Still fast enough."
Kade didn't respond.
He struck again.
Different angle.
Lira moved
Dodged
Another clean evade.
Then
The third strike came.
And it landed.
Not hard.
But enough.
Lira blinked
"…What?"
"You saw the first two," Kade said.
A pause.
"You predicted the third."
Lira frowned.
"…Yeah. That's what you do."
Kade shook his head slightly.
"No."
A beat.
"That's what gets you hit."
Before she could respond
The world shifted again.
More distortion.
More uncertainty.
Lira moved
Fast.
Circling.
Trying to regain control of the space.
But something felt off.
Her movements were still sharp
Still precise
But her timing
Was just slightly off.
Kade appeared in front of her
Closer than expected.
His hand stopping just short of her throat.
"…Too fast," he said.
Lira stepped back immediately.
Frustration flickering now.
"…That doesn't make sense."
"It does," Kade replied.
"You move before you understand."
Silence.
That one landed.
Lira looked away briefly.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
"…Where I'm from," she said quietly,
"…if you stopped moving, you didn't get a second chance."
The air shifted.
Not the fractured zone.
Something else.
Kael glanced at her.
He hadn't heard that tone from her before.
"…Crowded districts," Lira continued.
"Lower tiers. No guards. No protection."
A faint smile returned
But it didn't reach her eyes.
"You learn fast or you don't last."
She spun the dagger again
But slower this time.
More deliberate.
"I wasn't the strongest," she said.
"Wasn't the smartest either."
A pause.
"…But I was fast."
Silence.
"Fast enough to run."
Another pause.
"…Fast enough to take what I needed."
Her eyes flickered slightly.
"…Fast enough to not get caught."
Kael frowned slightly.
"…And when you couldn't run?"
Lira didn't answer immediately.
"…Then you made sure no one touched you first."
The meaning sat there.
Clear.
Heavy.
Kade stepped closer.
"…So you move before anything can reach you," he said.
Lira met his gaze.
"…Yeah."
Kade's voice lowered slightly.
"And that's why you'll lose."
Her eyes sharpened instantly.
"…Careful."
But Kade didn't back down.
"You're not reacting to what's happening," he said.
A pause.
"You're reacting to what might happen."
Silence.
Lira didn't move.
Didn't speak.
Because that was true.
"…You don't trust what you see," Kade continued.
"You trust your fear."
That one
Hit.
Hard.
Lira looked down slightly.
Her grip tightening again.
"…So what," she said quietly,
"…I slow down and get hit?"
Kade shook his head.
"No."
A pause.
"You learn to see before you move."
Without warning.
He attacked again.
Lira's body reacted.
Instinctively.
She moved.
Fast.
But this time
She stopped herself.
Just for a split second.
She watched.
Really watched.
Kade's movement.
The shift in his weight.
The direction of his strike.
Then.
She moved.
Cleaner.
Sharper.
More precise.
The attack missed.
Closer than before
But intentional.
"…That's it," Kade said quietly.
Lira blinked.
"…That felt slower."
Kade nodded.
"It was."
A pause.
"But better."
Lira exhaled slowly.
"…I hate that you're right."
Kade didn't respond.
But there was something in his expression now.
Subtle.
But there.
Understanding.
"…We're not done," he said.
Lira smirked faintly.
"…Didn't think we were."
She stepped forward again.
Slower.
More deliberate.
The dagger spun once
Then stopped.
Her eyes focused.
Not on everything.
Not on every possibility.
Just what was real.
And for the first time
Lira didn't move first.
She waited.
And saw.
