Chapter 53 - Chapter 53:When strength isn't enough

Chapter 53: When Strength Isn't Enough

It didn't happen in battle.

There was no warning.

No enemy to fight.

Just a decision.

Kael didn't resist.

That was the worst part.

The Obsidian Hand moved quickly—

Clean.

Efficient.

By the time the others realized.

He was already gone.

"…No."

Bram's voice broke the silence first.

Low.

Dangerous.

"…No, that's not happening."

Lira was already moving.

"Where did they take him?!"

A guard stepped forward.

But hesitated.

Because the pressure from the group.

Was different now.

"They… invoked authority," he said.

Tovin's expression hardened.

"…Political override," he muttered.

Nyra's voice was quiet.

"…They planned this."

Bram turned

Already heading toward the central district.

"…Then we break it."

Kade's voice stopped him.

"You won't."

Silence.

Bram turned slowly.

"…Move."

Kade didn't.

"…You'll start a war you can't win," he said.

"I don't care."

That was the truth.

Bram's fists clenched.

"…They took one of ours."

Lira stepped beside him.

"…We're not leaving him there."

Nyra didn't move.

But her voice

Was colder than before.

"…If we act now, we lose everything."

Silence.

That landed.

Because it was true.

Tovin spoke next.

"…They want us to react," he said.

"…To justify what they do next."

A pause.

"…Control him. Contain him. Or worse."

Bram looked between them.

"…So we just wait?" he asked.

No one answered immediately.

Because that.

Felt like betrayal.

Elsewhere…

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

Kael sat in the center.

Not bound.

Not restrained.

But surrounded.

Three figures stood across from him.

Obsidian Hand.

Watching.

Evaluating.

"…You didn't resist," one of them said.

Kael didn't look up.

"…I didn't need to."

A pause.

"…Confident," another noted.

"…No," Kael replied.

Finally looking up.

"…Just tired."

Silence.

"…You understand why you're here," the leader said.

Kael nodded once.

"…You're afraid."

That didn't provoke them.

Because it was true.

"…We're cautious," the leader corrected.

"…You're connected to them."

A pause.

"…That makes you unpredictable."

Kael's gaze didn't waver.

"…So is what's coming."

Silence.

"…Tell us everything," the leader said.

Kael leaned back slightly.

"…You won't like it."

"…That's not your concern."

A long pause.

Then.

Kael spoke.

About the void.

The voice.

The Devourers.

About being seen.

Chosen.

Connected.

The room grew heavier with every word.

Even they.

Could feel it.

"…And you expect us to believe you're still in control?" one asked.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Then

"…No."

That answer.

Was honest.

Too honest.

"…Then you understand our position," the leader said.

Kael nodded.

"…You want to decide what I am."

A pause.

"…Before I decide it myself."

Silence.

That unsettled them more than anything else.

Outside…

The team didn't move.

Didn't act.

Didn't speak.

And that.

Was worse than any fight.

Lira paced.

"…I hate this," she muttered.

Bram sat.

But not relaxed.

Like something barely held back.

"…He let them take him," he said quietly.

Nyra nodded.

"…He chose not to fight."

Tovin's voice followed.

"…Which means he believed we shouldn't either."

That hurt.

Because it made sense.

But it didn't feel right.

"…What if they hurt him?" Lira asked.

No one answered.

Because they didn't know.

And that uncertainty.

Was unbearable.

Kade stood apart from them.

Watching.

Not intervening.

Because this.

Was something they had to endure.

Not overcome.

"…This is what it means," he said quietly.

They looked at him.

"…To be part of something bigger."

A pause.

"…You don't always get to fight."

Bram's jaw tightened.

"…Then what do we do?"

Kade's answer was simple.

"…You wait."

Silence.

"…And trust him."

Back in the room

Kael sat still.

Unmoving.

Unafraid.

But not untouched.

Because even now.

He could feel it.

That presence.

Watching.

Waiting.

Interested.

"…They think they have time," the voice whispered inside him.

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…They don't."

The leader leaned forward.

"…What was that?"

Kael looked up.

Calm.

"…You're asking the wrong questions," he said.

A pause.

"…You should be asking how long you have left."

Silence.

And for the first time

Even they felt it.

Not fear of him.

Fear of what was coming.
