Chapter 52: The Line Between Ally and Threat

The city didn't recover.

It shifted.

What happened in the street spread faster than truth.

Faster than reason.

"People were turned"

"No, reshaped"

"It was one of them"

"No… it was him"

Kael heard it all.

Every whisper.

Every accusation.

And none of it was fully wrong.

The central hall of Eryndor filled again.

But this time.

Not with urgency.

With division.

Guild leaders stood apart.

Not unified.

Not aligned.

Opposing.

"…This is exactly what we warned about," a Silver Dominion envoy said sharply.

"…An uncontrolled anomaly within our walls."

Bram stepped forward immediately.

"…Watch your words."

The envoy didn't flinch.

"…Or what?"

Tension spiked instantly.

"Enough."

Kade's voice cut through the room.

Silence followed.

But not peace.

The Iron Vanguard leader stepped forward.

"…We all saw what happened," he said.

A pause.

"…That thing came because of him."

Eyes turned to Kael.

Heavy.

Evaluating.

Judging.

Kael didn't look away.

"…It didn't come because of me," he said.

A pause.

"…It came through me."

That made it worse.

Murmurs spread instantly.

"…Then you admit it."

"…You're a gateway"

"…A liability"

"Or an asset."

The voice came from the side.

All eyes turned.

A new figure stepped forward.

Leader of the Obsidian Hand.

Calm.

Measured.

Dangerous.

"…If what he says is true," she continued,

"…then he's the only one who can interact with them directly."

Silence.

"…Which makes him valuable."

Tovin's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Or volatile," he added.

Nyra stepped beside Kael.

"…He's neither," she said.

A pause.

"…He's necessary."

That word hung in the air.

Not comforting.

Unavoidable.

The Silver Dominion envoy scoffed.

"…Necessary threats are still threats."

Lira stepped forward slightly.

"…You want to test that theory?" she said.

Bram cracked his knuckles.

"…I don't mind."

The tension snapped tighter.

This wasn't discussion anymore.

It was fracture.

Kade stepped forward again.

"…You're all missing the point," he said.

Silence fell.

"…That thing wasn't a Devourer Lord."

A pause.

"…It was a fragment."

That landed.

Hard.

"…A fragment?" someone whispered.

Kade's gaze moved across the room.

"…And it nearly broke you."

No one argued.

Because no one could.

"…So your choices are simple," Kade continued.

A pause.

"…Work together."

"…Or fall apart before they even arrive."

Silence.

The truth was clear.

But truth didn't erase fear.

The Iron Vanguard leader spoke again.

"…Then what do you suggest we do about him?"

The room stilled.

Because now

It was direct.

Kael.

Not the threat.

The variable.

Kael stepped forward.

"…You don't do anything," he said.

A pause.

"…I decide what I do."

That shifted the tone instantly.

Not defiance.

Authority.

"…And what exactly is that?" the Silver envoy asked.

Kael's voice didn't waver.

"…I get stronger."

A pause.

"…And I stop them."

Silence.

Not because they believed him.

Because they wanted to.

But fear

Still lingered.

Tovin stepped forward slightly.

"…Logically," he said,

"…he remains our highest probability of success."

A pause.

"…But also our greatest risk."

That was the truth.

Nyra looked at Kael.

Not uncertain.

Steady.

"…Then we manage the risk," she said.

Bram nodded.

"…We don't abandon him."

Lira smirked slightly.

"…Yeah, that'd be stupid."

The room divided again.

Some nodding.

Some hesitating.

Some already deciding against it.

The Obsidian Hand leader smiled faintly.

"…Then it seems we have factions within factions now."

And just like that

It became official.

Not unity.

Alignment.

Temporary.

Fragile.

Kade turned away.

"…Then decide quickly," he said.

A pause.

"…Because they won't wait."

The meeting broke soon after.

Not resolved.

Not unified.

Just… delayed.

As they stepped outside

The air felt heavier.

Not from pressure.

From doubt.

Lira exhaled.

"…So… half the city trusts us…"

Bram snorted.

"…And the other half wants to lock Kael up."

Tovin adjusted his cloak.

"…Or weaponize him."

Nyra looked at Kael.

"…And you?"

A pause.

"…Do you trust them?"

Kael looked back at the city.

At the people.

The guilds.

The tension.

Then

He shook his head.

"…No."

A pause.

"…But I trust you."

Silence.

That

Was enough.

Kade stood ahead of them.

"…Good," he said.

A pause.

"…Because from here on…"

His voice lowered slightly.

"…you won't just be fighting them."

A glance back at the city.

"…You'll be fighting everything around you too."

And far away

Beyond sight

Beyond reach

Something shifted again.

Not subtle.

Not distant.

Closer.

Watching.

Waiting.
