Chapter 57: The Road to the Edge
The world felt different outside Eryndor.
Not broken.
Not fractured.
Untouched.
For now.
The road stretched ahead.
Worn stone cutting through open land.
Fields long abandoned.
Structures half-collapsed.
Signs of life.
Gone.
"…People left fast," Lira said quietly.
Nyra knelt briefly near the road.
Her fingers brushing faint markings in the dust.
"…Not fast enough," she said.
Bram frowned.
"…What does that mean?"
Nyra stood.
"…There's no struggle here."
A pause.
"…No resistance."
Tovin's voice followed.
"…Which suggests displacement, not destruction."
"…Or something worse," Kael said.
They didn't ask.
Because they all felt it.
Something had passed through here.
Not violently.
But completely.
The further they traveled.
The quieter it became.
No wind.
No movement.
Even the air felt.
Still.
"…I don't like this," Bram muttered.
"…You say that a lot," Lira replied.
"…Because it keeps being true."
Kade walked ahead of them.
Silent.
Observing everything.
But even he.
Seemed more focused than usual.
That alone.
Was enough to raise the tension.
By midday.
The land began to change.
Subtle at first.
The ground.
Uneven.
Not broken.
Shifted.
As if something beneath it had moved.
"…We're close," Tovin said.
Kael didn't respond.
Because he already knew.
The pull had changed again.
Stronger.
Heavier.
Each step forward.
Felt like walking against pressure.
"…You okay?" Nyra asked.
Kael nodded slowly.
"…It's calling," he said.
A pause.
"…Not like before."
Lira frowned.
"…Meaning?"
Kael exhaled.
"…Before, it watched."
A pause.
"…This one waits."
That difference.
Was worse.
The sky darkened slightly.
Not clouds.
Something else.
The light itself felt dimmer.
Distorted.
"…That's not natural," Tovin said.
"…Nothing here is," Bram replied.
They moved over a ridge.
And stopped.
Because they saw it.
The outer ridge.
Or what remained of it.
The land dipped inward.
Forming a massive basin.
Not jagged.
Not chaotic.
Smooth.
Perfectly shaped.
Like something had pressed it down.
With impossible force.
"…That wasn't a collapse," Nyra said quietly.
"…No," Kade replied.
A pause.
"…That was impact."
Silence.
At the center of the basin.
The fractures pulsed.
Not spreading.
Beating.
Slow.
Heavy.
Like a heart.
Kael stepped forward slightly.
The pull surged instantly.
Stronger than anything before.
His breath caught.
"…Yeah…" he said under his breath.
"…This is it."
The others felt it too now.
Not the connection.
The pressure.
Bram's stance shifted slightly.
"…Feels like something's pushing back."
Lira's usual expression faded.
"…No…"
A pause.
"…It's not pushing."
Her voice lowered.
"…It's waiting for us to step closer."
Tovin's eyes locked onto the center.
"…Controlled environment."
A pause.
"…Deliberate."
Nyra's voice was steady.
But quiet.
"…This isn't a zone."
Silence.
"…It's a domain."
That word—
Changed everything.
Because domains—
Belonged to something.
Something powerful enough to shape reality itself.
Kade stepped forward.
"…Stay sharp," he said.
A pause.
"…From here on, everything reacts."
Kael didn't move.
Not yet.
Because now.
He could feel it clearly.
Not just presence.
Intent.
Heavy.
Crushing.
Different from Elyndra.
This wasn't curiosity.
This was dominance.
Power that didn't question.
It imposed.
"…Dravok," Kael said quietly.
The name settled over the group.
Like weight.
Bram exhaled slowly.
"…Sounds like something that hits hard."
Kael's eyes didn't leave the basin.
"…It does more than that."
A pause.
"…It breaks everything."
Silence.
The fractures pulsed again.
Stronger.
Closer.
As if reacting to them.
Or to him.
Kade looked at Kael.
"…We don't rush this," he said.
Kael nodded.
"…No."
A pause.
"…We step into it."
And as he took the first step forward.
The pulse stopped.
Instantly.
The entire basin.
Went still.
Not calm.
Held.
Like something had just.
Taken notice.
Deep within the basin.
Something shifted.
Massive.
Slow.
Awakening.
And this time.
Everyone felt it.
Not just pressure.
Presence.
Overwhelming.
Ancient.
Unstoppable.
Kael didn't stop walking.
"…Stay close," he said.
Behind him.
They followed.
Not because they weren't afraid.
But because they were.
And they chose to move forward anyway.
Far below.
Within the heart of the basin.
Something opened its eyes.
And the world.
Seemed smaller because of it.
