Chapter 58: The Weight That Shouldn't Exist

The moment it opened its eyes.

Everything changed.

The air collapsed.

Not moved.

Not disturbed.

Crushed.

Kael's body locked.

His breath.

Gone.

Pressure slammed into them.

From every direction.

Not like the titan.

Not like Elyndra.

This was different.

Absolute.

"…DOWN!" Kade's voice cut through the suffocating force.

They didn't think.

They reacted.

Instinct.

Bram dropped first.

Slamming one knee into the ground.

Forcing his body lower.

Nyra followed.

Her power expanding.

Trying to stabilise.

But.

It buckled.

"…It's too much—!" she gasped.

Lira hit the ground.

Flat.

Her breathing uneven.

"…I can't—move—" she choked.

Tovin collapsed beside her.

His hands trembling.

"…Pressure exceeds… output threshold…" he forced out.

Even Kade.

Tensed.

Not overwhelmed.

But strained.

That alone.

Was terrifying.

Kael stood.

Barely.

His body shaking.

Not from fear.

From resistance.

The pull surged violently.

Not calling.

Demanding.

"…Kneel."

The voice didn't echo.

It didn't travel.

It existed.

Inside them.

Around them.

Through them.

Bram's teeth clenched.

"…Not happening…" he growled.

But his body dropped lower.

Forced.

Nyra's control shattered

Her breath breaking.

"…This isn't… pressure…" she gasped.

"…It's… authority…"

That word.

Explained everything.

This wasn't force.

It was command.

And their bodies.

Were obeying.

Kael's knees buckled.

He caught himself.

Barely.

The ground beneath him cracked.

Not from impact.

From resistance.

"…You stand?"

The voice shifted slightly.

Not anger.

Interest.

The basin trembled.

Not violently.

Controlled.

Measured.

Something moved below.

Slow.

Massive.

Each movement.

Felt like the world adjusting to it.

Kade's voice came low.

"…We don't engage."

A pause.

"…We survive."

Lira forced her head slightly up.

"…How?!"

Kade's eyes scanned the terrain.

Fast.

Calculating.

Then.

"…There."

A shallow break in the basin's edge.

Not deep.

But enough.

"…Move," he said.

No one could.

Their bodies.

Wouldn't respond.

Kael clenched his fists.

The Forgotten surged.

Not wildly.

Pushing.

Fighting back against the pressure.

"…Get… up…" he forced out.

Not to himself.

To them.

The connection spread.

Not consuming.

Stabilizing.

Nyra felt it first.

"…Kael…" she whispered.

Her breathing steadied.

Just enough.

Then Bram.

"…He's… offsetting it…" he muttered.

Lira pushed herself up slightly.

Shaking.

"…Okay… okay… we move…" she said.

Tovin forced his body forward.

"…Partial resistance… window limited…" he said.

Kade moved first.

Low.

Controlled.

Not fighting the pressure.

Working within it.

"…Don't push against it," he said.

A pause.

"…Move with it."

That didn't make sense.

But they followed.

Each movement.

Small.

Measured.

Painful.

The pressure surged again.

Stronger.

"…Still resisting…" the voice said.

A pause.

"…Break."

The ground beneath them dropped slightly.

The weight increased instantly.

Nyra cried out.

Her control slipping again.

Bram slammed his hand into the ground.

Holding himself steady.

Lira nearly collapsed.

Catching herself at the last second.

Tovin's breathing broke.

"…System… failing…" he muttered.

Kael stepped forward again.

Further than he should.

The pressure hit him hardest.

But he didn't stop.

"…Look at me!" he shouted.

The team turned.

Barely.

"…Stay with me," he said.

A pause.

"…We're not done."

The words.

Simple.

But they grounded them.

Nyra steadied.

Bram pushed forward.

Lira forced movement.

Tovin recalculated.

Together.

They moved.

Closer to the break.

The pressure resisted.

Pushed back.

Tested them.

But they didn't stop.

Not this time.

Not after everything.

Finally.

They reached it.

The shallow drop.

Kade moved first.

Sliding into the depression.

The pressure easing slightly.

"…Down!" he ordered.

They followed.

One by one.

Dropping into the cover.

The difference was immediate.

Not gone.

But less.

Manageable.

Breathing returned.

Barely.

Above them.

The basin pulsed again.

And something rose.

Not fully.

Not yet.

But enough to see.

A massive shape.

Forming.

Solidifying.

"…You hide," the voice said.

Not mocking.

Observing.

"…Correct."

A pause.

"…For now."

Kael stared upward.

Breathing heavy.

"…We're not ready," Lira whispered.

No one argued.

Because they weren't.

Not for this.

Not yet.

Kade's voice was low.

"…Then we learn."

A pause.

"…Or we die."

Kael didn't look away from the rising shape.

The pull still there.

Stronger than ever.

"…No," he said quietly.

A pause.

"…We adapt."

Above them.

Dravok's presence settled.

Not attacking.

Not chasing.

Watching.

Waiting.

Like a force of nature.

Deciding when to move.

And for now.

It allowed them to live.
