Chapter 43 - Chapter 43

This was basically a loophole Killian had exploited back when he launched Baymax.

Because if Baymax had been released as a medical robot, then not only would it have needed to go through technical review, it also would have faced all kinds of regulatory controls. Without a year or two, there would have been no chance of getting it certified.

So Killian had simply released it under the title of a robotic consultant.

That directly sidestepped the issue, and it was exactly that loophole that Alex and the pharmaceutical company representatives had targeted when they dared to sue Killian.

"Senator, please allow me to direct your attention to page forty-six, clause seven, item two, of the materials we provided."

"After conducting market analysis on Baymax, we strongly suspect that its so-called human health scanning is actually performed using a powerful, high-dose X-ray radiation scan."

"And according to currently known scientific data, one chest X-ray exposes a person to about 1.1 mSv, while an upper gastrointestinal scan involves around 2.55 mSv."

"And for a full-body scan like the one Baymax appears to perform, the radiation dose would be at least 5 mSv."

"For an ordinary person, the recommended radiation exposure limit per year is 1 mSv. Based on the currently available data, we therefore have strong reason to suspect that Baymax's scanning technology may cause severe damage to the human body, no less dangerous than nuclear radiation."

"And senators, please note that this is under controlled conditions, once per year."

"But Pioneer Tech has provided no detailed recommendations or safeguards whatsoever. That means many people may have already undergone multiple scans, perhaps many more than that."

"So on behalf of the Senate Federal Food and Drug Administration Committee, as well as the pharmaceutical companies in the same field, I formally demand that Pioneer Tech disclose the related patented technologies."

After finishing the materials he had prepared, the room fell into silence.

Because if what Alex said were true, then Baymax's scanning technology really would carry tremendous hidden danger, perhaps even to the point of being called criminal manslaughter.

"Heh. That is nothing more than one-sided malicious speculation."

"In fact, it's malicious slander against a competitor."

"So let me ask you this. Since you claim Baymax's scan uses X-ray radiation, have you conducted any relevant radiation measurements? Any X-ray exposure testing?"

"If you have any actual proof that Baymax carries X-ray radiation hazards, then I, on behalf of my company, will buy back every Baymax sold at ten times the original price on the spot."

"But if you don't, then I'm sorry. After this hearing ends, I will, on behalf of Pioneer Tech, sue every pharmaceutical company here, along with the Senate Federal Food and Drug Administration Committee."

"I am only a law-abiding federal citizen, and my Pioneer Tech is also a law-abiding company whose only intent is to benefit the public. Yet now, simply because we produced cutting-edge technology, we are being maliciously suppressed by all of you."

"I would very much like to see whether this is still the United States of America at all, whether it is still the country that claims to revere freedom and democracy."

After hearing Alex's statement, Killian was practically amused into anger.

It was like someone selling phones being accused that their phones had radiation levels comparable to a nuclear plant. It was absurd.

So Killian slammed the table, stood up, and spoke with righteous indignation toward Alex and the others.

Between his words and his tone, many people watching him began to imagine the scene in their minds: a new tech company develops world-changing technology, only to be jointly suppressed by the industry giants.

It was practically the exact face of monopolistic corporate bullying everyone despised.

And as the live broadcast continued, more and more people joined the discussion.

Without exception, the overwhelming majority stood on Killian's side.

Because on this land, the stories people grew up with were always about lone heroes, about Captain America, about people who had been suppressed by their peers, rejected by society, only to finally rise, and then, just when they wanted to serve their country, were dragged into meaningless publicity by those who only cared about money.

"Heh. Perhaps you're right. Or perhaps we were short-sighted. For that, I can apologize."

"But what I want to say is this. Today's issue is about something that benefits all humanity. Whether it's Baymax's intelligent chip or its vital signs scanner, every one of these technologies is epoch-making."

"You are a genius. That much must be admitted."

"But what I want everyone to understand is that if you were to make all of these technologies public, then everyone in the world could enjoy the highest possible sense of security."

"Every person could detect problems in their body before getting seriously ill, take medicine or make changes in time, and improve their health."

"You cannot do this alone. Let me point something out. An entire quarter has already passed, and your company's market penetration is still less than one percent."

"How long will it take before every American citizen, or even everyone in the world, can benefit from this?"

"Ten years? Twenty years? Or one hundred years, until everyone is already ashes?"

"And Baymax has enormous potential. It could become more than just a medical health consultant. It could become a bodyguard, protecting every individual's safety. It could become a police officer, so that when facing criminals, no human officer would ever again have to risk their life."

"It could become a firefighter. In the face of fire, if equipped with dry extinguishing powder, it could put out the flames directly, eliminating casualties and losses entirely."

"And that is something your company cannot possibly achieve alone. It needs the combined strength of the entire federal people."

"Baymax belongs to America. It belongs to the world. It should not remain in the hands of a single private individual."

"Thank Baymax. Thank the federal government."

Seeing that force had not worked, Alex immediately switched to a gentler face. Then he stood up and spoke warmly to the senators and everyone present.

And after he finished, part of the room actually began applauding.

Because after listening to Alex, some people suddenly felt that he really did have a point.

If Baymax stayed in Killian's hands, they might not get to enjoy it for decades. But if Baymax's technology were made public, then all the major and minor medical companies could begin producing it. In that case, perhaps in less than a year, everyone would be able to enjoy it.

"Well said, Mr. Alex."

One of the five senators even could not help clapping as he spoke.

Killian looked over.

This was the same man who, earlier, had shown no reaction at all when Killian met his eyes.

So this, then, was where Alex and the others had found their confidence.
