Chapter 43 - The Night She Couldn’t Breathe

The distance between Maya and Calvin had not appeared suddenly. It had crept into their lives quietly, settling in the small spaces between conversations, in the pauses between messages, and in the coldness that now lingered where warmth once lived. For weeks, perhaps even months, Maya had felt it growing. Every day felt heavier than the last, as though she was carrying something fragile that was slowly breaking in her hands.

Yet despite everything, she still tried.

She tried in the little ways that seemed almost invisible. She spoke softly when he was irritated. She cooked meals he liked even when she was exhausted. She laughed when he joked, even when the jokes were no longer funny to her.

But none of it seemed to reach him anymore.

Monday evenings had become particularly strange. Those evenings belonged to the youth session at church, something Calvin never missed. No matter how tired he was or how busy the day had been, he always made time for it. At first Maya had admired his dedication, believing it was a sign of discipline and faith.

Lately, however, something about it unsettled her.

That Monday evening, she finally made a decision.

If this youth session was so important to Calvin, she would see it for herself.

The decision did not come easily. Maya sat for nearly an hour staring at her wardrobe before she found the strength to move. Her body felt strangely heavy, as though even dressing required more energy than she possessed.

But eventually she forced herself to stand.

She chose a simple outfit, nothing too noticeable. As she brushed her hair, she studied her reflection in the mirror. The woman looking back at her seemed tired in a way that sleep could not fix.

Still, she took a deep breath and left the apartment.

As she reached the entrance of the apartment building, she saw someone familiar approaching.

Arnold.

He was walking toward the building, pushing Calvin's beloved bicycle beside him.

The sight made Maya pause for a moment.

She greeted him politely. "Good evening."

Arnold looked up, clearly surprised to see her.

His eyes moved quickly over her, as though trying to figure something out.

"Good evening," he replied slowly. "Where are you going?"

Maya kept her tone calm.

"I'm attending the youth session at church."

For a moment Arnold simply stared at her.

There was something odd in his expression, something almost suspicious.

Then he nodded slowly.

"Alright," he said.

Maya gave a small polite smile and continued walking past him.

But as she moved further away, she heard his voice again.

He was on the phone.

"Yeah… she's coming," Arnold said quietly.

Maya did not need to guess who he was speaking to.

A small smirk appeared on her lips, though there was no real amusement behind it.

She kept walking.

The church premises were already lively when she arrived. Groups of young people stood in small circles talking and laughing. Some were seated along the steps, others leaning against the walls as they chatted.

Maya looked around.

Calvin was nowhere to be seen.

She stood near the entrance, feeling slightly awkward but trying to remain composed.

Ten minutes later, Calvin arrived.

He wasn't alone.

Two women walked beside him.

They seemed comfortable with him, laughing easily as they approached. One of them had bright eyes and an energetic presence. The other carried herself with quiet confidence.

From the way the other members greeted them, Maya quickly learned their names.

Felicity.

Danielle.

As people spoke around them, bits of conversation floated through the air.

Apparently Calvin had gone to Danielle's house earlier to wait for her so they could come together. After that, they had stopped by Felicity's place so she could join them as well.

Maya stood still, absorbing the information silently.

Then Calvin's eyes met hers.

For a brief moment.

There was no warmth in them.

No recognition.

Just cold distance.

He looked away as if he had never seen her before.

The youth president soon noticed Maya standing alone and approached her with a friendly smile.

"Welcome! I don't think we've met before."

Maya introduced herself politely.

Moments later, the youth president began introducing her to others.

When they reached Calvin, something strange happened.

Calvin behaved as if he were meeting her for the very first time.

He nodded politely, his expression neutral.

"Nice to meet you," he said.

Maya felt something twist painfully inside her chest.

But she forced a small smile.

"Nice to meet you too."

The group soon began moving toward another location where the forum would be held. Maya walked quietly among them, trying to focus on the discussions that followed.

The forum itself went surprisingly well.

People spoke passionately about different topics, sharing ideas and experiences. At some point, Maya even found herself becoming engaged in the conversation.

For a while, she almost forgot about the earlier incident.

Almost.

When the session ended, it was already late.

The youth president began organizing transportation arrangements to ensure everyone returned home safely. Those who lived close to one another were paired together so they could share rides.

Felicity turned to Maya.

"Where are you headed?" she asked kindly.

Maya mentioned her neighborhood.

Felicity's face brightened.

"Oh! Calvin lives around there too. You two can go together."

Before Maya could respond, Calvin spoke quickly.

"I won't be going that way tonight," he said.

Everyone turned toward him.

"I need to stop by Danielle's place to pick something up."

The words came too quickly.

Almost rehearsed.

Maya felt something sharp stab through her chest.

But she nodded calmly.

"That's alright," she said gently. "I'll be fine on my own."

She smiled politely and slowly distanced herself from the group.

It took everything inside her to maintain that smile.

Because inside, something was collapsing.

The pain rose suddenly, like a wave crashing through her chest. It wasn't just emotional. It felt physical, pressing down on her ribs, squeezing the air from her lungs.

Hurt.

Sadness.

Bitterness.

Anxiety.

Anger.

All of it swirled together until she could barely separate one feeling from another.

She felt like she was dying inside.

Fortunately—or perhaps unfortunately—the youth president had brought his car.

When he realized how far some people needed to travel, he insisted on driving a few of them home.

That was how Maya ended up in the car with Calvin, Felicity, and Danielle.

She tried to decline politely, but there were no buses available and the nearest train station was far away.

The moment the car doors closed around them, Maya felt trapped.

It quickly became her worst nightmare.

Calvin seemed completely relaxed.

He laughed easily, joking with Danielle and Felicity as if the evening had been perfect. His voice filled the small space of the car as he told stories and teased them playfully.

Everyone responded warmly.

Everyone except Maya.

She sat quietly in the back seat, staring out the window.

She had never felt so lonely.

Not even when she was truly alone.

Her chest felt tight.

She tried to breathe slowly, but the air would not come properly.

Each breath felt shallow and incomplete.

She glanced at the rearview mirror.

Calvin's eyes met hers for a brief moment.

There was the same coldness she had seen earlier.

Then he looked away and continued talking.

Something inside Maya shattered.

Her breathing became uneven.

She pressed her hand lightly against her chest, trying to steady herself.

But it only grew worse.

Tears began to slip down her cheeks silently.

Felicity noticed first.

She turned slightly in her seat, concern filling her expression.

"Are you okay?"

Maya shook her head quickly.

"I'm fine," she whispered.

But Felicity was not convinced.

"What's wrong?"

Others in the car began to look back as well.

Maya knew if she spoke, her voice would betray her.

The sobs pressing against her throat would escape.

So she forced a small smile and repeated quietly, "I'm okay."

The conversation slowly resumed, though the atmosphere had shifted slightly.

Calvin, however, seemed completely oblivious.

When they reached the church premises again, Maya asked to be dropped there. From that point, it was only a short walk home.

The words tasted bitter as they left her mouth.

Everything tasted bitter lately.

Since the day she had overheard Calvin calling her his mother.

Since the recording incident.

Since all the little humiliations that followed.

The car drove away, leaving Maya standing alone beneath the dim streetlights.

The moment it disappeared, her composure broke.

Tears flowed freely as she began walking.

Her steps were slow and unsteady.

By the time she reached the apartment building, she was sobbing openly.

She barely managed to unlock the door and enter the condo.

Once inside, she walked straight to the bathroom.

There, she undressed slowly and sank to the floor.

The sobs that followed were deep and uncontrollable.

All the pain she had been holding back poured out at once.

For nearly an hour, she remained there, crying until exhaustion finally dulled the intensity of the storm inside her.

Eventually she washed her face and changed into comfortable clothes.

When she returned to the bedroom, she sat quietly on the bed and opened a movie on her phone.

The screen glowed softly in the dark room.

Sometime later, the door opened.

Calvin entered.

He looked cheerful at first, but the moment he saw her sitting there, his expression hardened into a scowl.

Maya gathered what little strength she had left.

"Calvin," she said softly.

He paused.

"Why were you so cruel to me today?"

The question hung heavily in the air.

Calvin's response came quickly.

"It's your fault."

Maya blinked.

"My fault?"

"You came to the youth session on purpose," he said coldly. "You wanted to catch me doing something."

Her voice trembled.

"What act are you talking about?"

Calvin shrugged.

"I don't know."

Then he turned and walked into the bathroom.

Maya wiped an escaped tear from her cheek and focused her eyes back on the movie playing on her phone.

When Calvin returned, he lay down and fell asleep almost immediately.

But Maya could not sleep.

Hours passed slowly.

Sometime deep in the night, Calvin stirred beside her and reached for her.

His hands moved with familiar confidence.

Maya's body tensed.

Part of her wanted to resist.

But another part of her—the part that still loved him—remained silent.

She did not push him away.

When it was over, Calvin drifted back into sleep without a word.

Maya lay beside him in the darkness.

Tears slid quietly down the sides of her face.

She made no sound.

The room was completely silent.

And for the first time that night, she finally understood how someone could feel utterly alone even while lying next to the person they loved most.
