Chapter 44 - The Weight of Silence

The days that followed the painful Monday night seemed to blur together in a strange, exhausting routine. Nothing truly changed between Maya and Calvin. If anything, the silence between them deepened, stretching wider and colder with each passing day.

They still shared the same space, the same bed, the same apartment, yet it often felt as if they existed in two completely different worlds.

Calvin moved through life with his usual ease, talking, laughing, going out, returning whenever he pleased. Maya watched him quietly, as if observing a stranger whose habits she had once known by heart.

Inside her, something fragile was slowly fading.

She still cooked when she could. She still spoke politely. She still tried to act normal, even when the effort drained the little energy she had left.

But deep inside, she felt like she was disappearing.

Every day she woke up with a heaviness pressing against her chest. Her sleep had become restless and shallow. Sometimes she stared at the ceiling for hours while the world around her slept, her mind replaying every moment that had led them here.

The bitter taste she had begun experiencing still appeared unexpectedly. It came without warning, spreading across her tongue like a reminder she could not escape.

Yet despite everything, Maya still clung to hope.

Perhaps things would change.

Perhaps Calvin would remember the girl he once loved.

Perhaps this distance was temporary.

When the next Monday evening arrived, the familiar uneasiness returned.

Monday evenings had become symbolic now.

They were reminders of the strange world Calvin belonged to—one where Maya no longer seemed welcome.

But this time, instead of avoiding the feeling, Maya made a quiet decision.

She would attend the youth session again.

The thought alone made her chest tighten, but she forced herself to prepare. Slowly she dressed, choosing something simple and comfortable.

As she stepped outside the apartment building, the evening air brushed gently against her skin.

The church premises were already active when she arrived. Groups of young people gathered around the courtyard, their laughter filling the warm evening air.

Maya took a quiet seat among them.

She scanned the crowd briefly.

Calvin was not there.

She was not surprised.

The session began shortly afterward. People sang, prayed, and discussed different topics together. Maya participated politely when she was asked to join in.

Despite everything, the atmosphere itself was pleasant.

For a moment she almost allowed herself to relax.

But about thirty minutes into the session, a small stir passed through the group.

Maya turned slightly.

Calvin had arrived.

He walked in casually, his familiar confident posture unchanged.

But he was not alone.

Danielle and Felicity walked beside him again, both of them chatting comfortably with him as they found seats among the others.

This time, however, there was someone new.

Esther.

The moment Maya noticed her, something inside her shifted.

Esther carried herself with an air of quiet pride, her movements controlled and deliberate. She seemed perfectly aware of her presence in the room.

Throughout the session, Maya noticed something else.

Esther kept glancing at her.

Not openly.

But subtly.

Small looks from the corner of her eyes.

Quick, dismissive glances.

Sometimes even faint smirks that barely touched her lips.

There was something in those looks that made Maya feel as though she was being measured and silently judged.

It was not friendly curiosity.

It felt like quiet superiority.

As if Esther believed she stood above her somehow.

Maya noticed every single one of those glances.

Yet she refused to react.

Instead, she continued participating in the activities with the same calm demeanor she had always shown.

If Esther expected discomfort or insecurity, Maya would not give her that satisfaction.

She simply remained herself.

Calvin, however, behaved exactly as he had the previous week.

He did not acknowledge her.

Not once.

When their eyes briefly met across the room, his expression remained distant and indifferent, as if she were merely another unfamiliar face in the crowd.

It was a strange kind of cruelty.

To exist so close to someone who once claimed to love you, yet be treated like a stranger.

The session eventually came to an end.

People began gathering their belongings and exchanging cheerful goodbyes.

Felicity approached Maya first.

"It was nice seeing you again," she said warmly.

Danielle joined them shortly afterward, smiling kindly as well.

They spoke casually for a few moments, discussing the evening's activities and sharing small pleasantries.

For that brief moment, Maya almost felt normal again.

But Calvin soon appeared beside them.

Without even glancing in Maya's direction, he continued chatting with the others.

A few minutes later, the four of them—Calvin, Felicity, Danielle, and Esther—began heading toward the exit together.

Maya watched them walk away.

Once again, she found herself alone.

The quiet that followed felt heavier than before.

She slowly left the church premises and began the familiar walk toward home.

The streets were calm, illuminated by soft yellow streetlights.

Her footsteps echoed faintly against the pavement as she walked.

Inside her chest, emotions swirled restlessly.

Sadness.

Confusion.

Humiliation.

Yet strangely, hope still lingered somewhere within her.

Perhaps she simply needed to talk to Calvin properly.

Perhaps if she asked him directly, he would finally be honest with her.

Lost in these thoughts, she barely noticed the sound approaching from behind.

A bicycle wheel rolled softly against the road.

She turned slightly.

Calvin was beside her.

He walked calmly, pushing his beloved bicycle as he usually did.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

The silence between them felt thick and uncomfortable.

Finally, Maya broke it.

"Is that Esther?" she asked quietly.

Calvin glanced at her.

"What?"

"The Esther you've been talking about."

He nodded casually.

"Yes."

Another silence followed.

Maya swallowed slowly.

"What's so great about her?" she asked.

Calvin frowned slightly.

Maya continued before she could lose her courage.

"What makes her better than me?"

Calvin stopped walking for a brief moment, clearly annoyed.

Maya forced herself to continue speaking.

"Because as far as I can see, I'm prettier than Esther," she said softly.

"And even sexier than her."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"So what makes her better than me to you?"

Calvin's expression hardened.

"That's exactly why I don't like talking to you," he said coldly.

"You're always like this."

Maya stared at him.

"What do you want me to say?"

"I want the truth," she replied quietly.

"If you think Esther is better than me, just say it."

She paused before continuing.

"And tell me what's really going on between you two."

Her eyes searched his face desperately.

"Because she definitely doesn't look like nothing is going on."

Calvin suddenly laughed.

A short, dismissive laugh.

"I don't know what you're talking about," he said.

Then he resumed walking.

The conversation ended there.

They continued the rest of the journey in silence.

Calvin walked beside his bicycle, occasionally adjusting the handlebars.

Maya walked beside him, her arms wrapped tightly around herself.

Tears slowly began forming in her eyes.

She tried to blink them away.

But they escaped anyway.

Quietly.

One after another.

She lowered her head slightly, hoping he would not notice.

But Calvin did notice.

And instead of concern, a faint snicker escaped his lips.

The sound pierced through her like a sharp needle.

Neither of them spoke again until they reached the apartment building.

The moment Maya stepped inside the condo, she walked straight to the bathroom.

She closed the door behind her and leaned against it, breathing slowly.

Her reflection stared back at her from the mirror.

Her eyes were red and swollen.

Her face looked pale and exhausted.

After a moment she turned on the sink and splashed cold water across her face.

Meanwhile, Calvin remained in the living room.

She could hear the faint sound of his phone as he scrolled through it.

Laughing occasionally at something on the screen.

The normalcy of it all made her chest ache even more.

Eventually she left the bathroom and went to bed.

Calvin joined her later.

He lay down beside her without saying a word.

Within minutes, his breathing slowed into the deep rhythm of sleep.

But Maya remained awake.

Sleep had become a stranger to her.

Night after night she lay in the darkness, her thoughts circling endlessly.

Her body felt drained in every possible way.

Physically exhausted.

Emotionally shattered.

Mentally overwhelmed.

Sometimes she felt as if her mind was slowly unraveling under the weight of everything she was trying to hold together.

And yet she still refused to give up.

She had invested so much in this relationship.

She had sacrificed time, energy, trust, and pieces of herself she could never fully recover.

To walk away now felt almost impossible.

Because if she left, she would have to face the painful truth that everything she had endured had been for nothing.

So she stayed.

Holding on to the fragile hope that somehow things would change.

That one day Calvin might look at her again the way he once had.

That the warmth they once shared might somehow return.

But deep down, a quiet voice inside her was beginning to understand something else.

Something she was not yet ready to admit.

That the person she was fighting so hard to keep no longer existed.

And that the girl she once was was slowly disappearing in the process.
