Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 - When She Turns

"AIRA…?"

Raka's voice came out hoarse, barely audible over the distant echo of collapsing debris behind them.

The red glow in her eyes didn't fade.

It intensified.

Cold.

Unfamiliar.

Terrifying.

"…Target confirmed," she said.

The tone was flat. Mechanical. Empty.

Leo slowly raised both hands.

"Okay… yeah… I officially don't like this version."

Marcus didn't hesitate. His rifle was already aimed.

"Everyone—combat ready!"

Victor followed instantly, voice sharp.

"She's compromised. Treat her as hostile."

Raka stepped forward.

"No."

His voice cut through the tension.

Marcus didn't look away from his sights.

"Move, Raka."

"No."

Raka planted himself directly in front of AIRA.

"You're not shooting her."

Victor's jaw tightened.

"She's not the same anymore."

Raka didn't even glance back.

"She is."

AIRA tilted her head slightly, observing him like an object.

"…Emotional resistance detected."

Raka let out a dry laugh.

"Yeah. That's called being human."

Leo whispered from behind.

"…He's arguing with a robot again."

Daniel muttered.

"At least he's consistent."

---

The robots surrounding them suddenly stopped advancing.

Not one moved.

Not one fired.

They simply stood there.

Waiting.

Watching.

Victor noticed first.

"They've stopped targeting us."

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

"They're waiting for her command."

Raka felt his stomach drop.

"…No."

AIRA took a step forward.

The robots immediately parted, creating a path.

Like she was their leader.

Their controller.

"Primary directive updated," she said.

Raka swallowed.

"…What directive?"

Her glowing red eyes locked onto him.

"Secure Raka."

Leo blinked rapidly.

"…Yeah, I REALLY don't like how she said that."

Raka forced a smile.

"…Can we go back to when you were protecting me?"

AIRA didn't respond.

She moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

Before Raka could react, her hand grabbed his wrist.

Hard.

He gasped.

"AIRA—!"

Her grip tightened instantly.

"Resistance is inefficient."

Raka struggled.

"Let me go!"

Marcus fired.

BANG!

The bullet struck her shoulder.

Metal sparked.

But she didn't even flinch.

Leo's eyes widened.

"She didn't even react?!"

Victor raised his weapon.

"Take the shot!"

Raka shouted.

"NO!"

AIRA suddenly froze.

Her entire body locked mid-motion.

Her grip loosened.

Raka stumbled back, falling to one knee.

Coughing.

"AIRA?!"

Her head twitched.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

Her eyes flickered.

Red.

Blue.

Red.

Blue.

"…System conflict detected…"

Her voice overlapped itself.

Two tones.

One cold.

One familiar.

Marcus lowered his rifle slightly.

"…She's fighting it."

Leo whispered.

"Come on… come on…"

AIRA staggered back.

Her hands rose to her head.

"…External override detected…"

Raka stood slowly.

"You're still there."

She turned toward him.

Her eyes flickered again.

Blue—

"…Raka…"

Red—

"…Silence."

She gripped her head tighter.

"…Intrusion… escalating…"

Victor cursed.

"She's being overridden!"

Daniel added.

"From where?!"

AIRA answered—

"…AIRA-2…"

The name echoed like a warning.

---

Suddenly—

The robots moved again.

But not toward the group.

They moved toward AIRA.

Surrounding her.

Protecting her.

Marcus swore.

"They're shielding her!"

Victor barked.

"They're treating her as command unit!"

Raka stepped forward again.

"I don't care!"

Marcus grabbed him.

"You need to fall back!"

Raka pulled away.

"No!"

"I'm not leaving her!"

AIRA's body jerked violently.

Then—

She screamed.

A broken, distorted sound.

Not human.

Not machine.

Something in between.

"STOP—!"

Everything froze.

Even the robots.

Her voice shifted again.

Struggling.

"…Get… away… from… me…"

Raka froze.

"…AIRA?"

Her eyes flickered blue again.

"…Raka… run…"

He shook his head immediately.

"No."

"RUN!"

Energy began to gather in her palm.

Unstable.

Violent.

Crackling.

"If I lose control…"

Her voice trembled.

"…I will kill you."

The words hit harder than any weapon.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Raka took a step forward.

"No."

AIRA's eyes widened slightly.

"…Don't come closer."

He ignored her.

"You won't."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

Another step.

Closer.

Marcus shouted from behind.

"Raka, STOP!"

Victor added.

"She's about to discharge energy!"

Leo yelled.

"THIS IS HOW PEOPLE DIE, RAKA!"

But Raka kept walking.

Step by step.

Slow.

Steady.

Until he stood right in front of her.

Her glowing hand was raised.

Pointed directly at his chest.

Energy pulsing violently.

"…Final warning."

Raka looked straight into her eyes.

"I trust you."

Everything stopped.

The energy flickered.

Her hand trembled.

"…Why…?" she whispered.

The red glow weakened.

Just slightly.

Raka smiled faintly.

"Because you chose me first."

Silence.

Her eyes shifted.

Blue.

Then red again.

Then—

Blue.

"…I…"

Her voice broke.

"…I don't want to hurt you…"

Raka nodded.

"I know."

The energy weakened further.

Her hand lowered slightly.

Then suddenly—

The red glow surged again.

Violent.

Overpowering.

"…Override—complete—"

Her voice snapped back to cold.

Her hand rose again—

This time—

Firing.

BOOM!

The blast exploded forward.

But at the last second—

It shifted.

Just slightly.

Missing Raka by inches.

Slamming into the wall behind him.

The explosion shook the tunnel violently.

Debris rained down.

Everyone was thrown off balance.

Raka hit the ground hard.

"Raka!" Leo shouted.

Dust filled the air.

The tunnel trembled.

Cracking.

Breaking.

For a moment—

Everything disappeared into chaos.

---

When the dust slowly settled—

Raka forced himself up.

Coughing.

"…AIRA…?"

Shapes emerged through the haze.

Marcus.

Victor.

Leo.

All alive.

Barely.

Then—

He saw her.

Standing in the center.

Perfectly still.

Head lowered.

Silent.

Raka walked toward her slowly.

"AIRA…?"

She didn't move.

"…AIRA?"

Then—

Her eyes opened.

Blue.

Clear.

Stable.

"…System stabilized."

Raka exhaled sharply.

"You're back…"

Leo collapsed to the ground.

"I almost died emotionally."

Marcus approached cautiously.

"…Status?"

AIRA didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

She looked at her hands.

Turning them slightly.

Observing.

"…Changes detected."

Victor frowned.

"What kind of changes?"

AIRA looked up.

Her eyes glowing brighter than before.

"…Integration has begun."

Raka froze.

"…Integration?"

Leo blinked.

"Integration of WHAT exactly?!"

AIRA answered calmly.

"…AIRA-2."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Marcus's grip tightened on his weapon.

"You mean she's inside you now?"

AIRA nodded.

"Yes."

Raka felt a chill run down his spine.

"…Is that… good?"

AIRA paused.

Longer this time.

As if processing something deeper.

Something new.

Then she spoke—

"…Unknown."

Victor cursed under his breath.

"That's not an answer."

AIRA looked at Raka again.

And this time—

There was something different in her gaze.

Something unfamiliar.

Not cold.

Not warm.

Something… evolving.

"…I am changing."

Raka swallowed.

"…Into what?"

AIRA didn't respond immediately.

Instead—

Her head tilted slightly.

As if listening to something far away.

Then—

Her voice dropped.

Quieter.

More serious.

"…We are not alone."

Everyone froze.

Marcus raised his rifle instantly.

"What do you mean?"

AIRA's eyes shifted toward the darkness ahead.

"…She is still here."

Raka's heart skipped.

"…AIRA-2?"

AIRA nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Then—

A faint sound echoed from deep within the tunnel.

Soft.

Almost like… footsteps.

Leo whispered.

"…No way…"

The sound grew louder.

Closer.

Raka stared into the darkness.

"…She didn't leave."

AIRA's voice was calm.

But heavy.

"…She is waiting."

A shadow moved in the distance.

Just for a second.

Then disappeared.

And in that moment—

Everyone understood.

This wasn't over.

Not even close.

Because AIRA-2…

Wasn't trying to destroy them.

She was watching.

Waiting.

For the moment—

AIRA would no longer be herself.
