For a few seconds, Daniel couldn't move.
The café noise faded into the background as Emily's words echoed in his mind.
"Noah is your son."
Daniel looked at the small boy sitting beside her.
Noah was still happily sipping his chocolate milk, completely unaware that his world had just changed.
Daniel slowly leaned back in his chair.
"I… don't understand," he said quietly.
Emily nodded.
"I know. It's a lot to take in."
Daniel ran his hand through his hair, trying to process everything.
"You're telling me… that for six years… I have a son… and I never knew?"
His voice wasn't loud, but the pain inside it was clear.
Emily lowered her eyes.
"Yes."
Daniel stood up and walked a few steps away from the table.
He looked out the café window, breathing slowly.
Seven years ago Emily had disappeared without explanation.
And now she was standing here telling him that he had missed the first six years of his child's life.
Emily watched him nervously.
"I wanted to tell you," she said softly.
Daniel turned around.
"Then why didn't you?"
Emily's eyes filled with emotion.
"Because everything was falling apart back then," she replied. "My mother was sick, my father had lost his job… and I had just started studying in a new city."
Daniel didn't respond.
Emily continued.
"When I found out I was pregnant… I was terrified."
Daniel's expression softened slightly.
"I didn't know what to do," she said. "I felt like I had already complicated your life by leaving. I didn't want to ruin your future too."
Daniel stared at her.
"You thought having a child with me would ruin my life?"
Emily shook her head quickly.
"No. I thought forcing you into responsibility before you were ready would."
Daniel sighed and sat down again.
He looked at Noah.
The boy had finished his drink and was now drawing shapes on a napkin with a crayon the waiter had given him.
Daniel studied the child's face carefully.
Something about the boy's smile felt strangely familiar.
"Does he know?" Daniel asked quietly.
Emily shook her head.
"No. He only knows that you're someone important from my past."
Daniel nodded slowly.
Then Noah suddenly looked up at him.
"Are you my mom's friend?" the boy asked innocently.
Daniel felt something warm and painful in his chest at the same time.
He smiled gently.
"Yes… something like that."
Noah grinned.
"That's good. My mom doesn't have many friends."
Emily looked embarrassed.
Daniel chuckled softly.
For the first time since hearing the truth, his expression relaxed a little.
But his mind was still full of questions.
He looked at Emily again.
"Why tell me now?"
Emily answered quietly.
"Because I'm moving back to this town."
Daniel's eyebrows lifted.
"And Noah deserves to know his father."
Daniel looked at the boy again.
A strange new feeling began growing inside him.
Fear.
Shock.
Responsibility.
But also something unexpected.
Hope.
Because for the first time in years, the future in front of him looked completely different.
And this time… he wasn't facing it alone.
