Chapter 44 – Honoring the Past
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii – March 2016
The morning sun shone on the tranquil waters of Pearl Harbor, reflecting the deep blue of the sky. The light breeze carried the salty scent of the ocean, mingled with the aroma of the flowers that grew around the memorial.
Jason Gibbs and Ziva David walked side by side, observing the historic site with respect.
Both had seen war up close, had lost comrades on the battlefield, and had understood the weight of sacrifice.
But Pearl Harbor…
Pearl Harbor was where it all began for a generation before theirs.
They crossed the white bridge leading to the USS Arizona Memorial, built over the wreckage of the ship sunk during the Japanese attack of December 7, 1941.
Jason looked at the immaculate structure on the water, feeling a weight on his chest.
—Pearl Harbor.— he murmured. —The war began here for the United States.
Ziva nodded, crossing her arms.
"And it changed history forever."
The silence between them wasn't awkward.
It was respectful.
Inside the memorial, a large white wall displayed the names of the 1,177 sailors and marines who died aboard the USS Arizona.
Jason and Ziva stood there, silently reading the names.
Jason ran his fingers over one of the engraved names.
"All young. Some weren't even 20 years old."
Ziva sighed.
"Soldiers die, but their stories continue."
Jason took a deep breath.
He had seen many names engraved in marble and steel. Comrades who never returned home.
But this…
This was different.
Because it was here that the United States learned the price of war.
They left the memorial and stood on the outer platform, observing the ship's wreckage just below the surface of the water.
"Sometimes I wonder…" Jason began, his voice firm but thoughtful. "What would these men think of us today?"
Ziva looked at him.
"If you want to know if they would approve of what we did… I believe so."
Jason smiled slightly, but his eyes were still fixed on the sea.
"It's strange. We've always been fighting wars in the shadows. But these guys… they were on the front lines without advanced technology, without satellite information, without immediate air support. Just courage and determination."
Ziva touched his arm gently.
"And yet, they won."
Jason nodded.
"Yes. They won."
After a while, they started walking back.
"Thank you for suggesting that," Jason said, looking at Ziva.
She shrugged, a small smile on her lips.
"I knew you'd like it."
He put an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close.
"It always amazes me how well you know me."
She chuckled softly.
"After so many years by your side, Gibbs, it would be worrying if I didn't know you."
Jason kissed the side of her head as they walked.
The day wasn't about adventure.
It was about respect, remembrance, and gratitude.
And sometimes, that was all that mattered.
Chapter 45 – Waves and New Friendships
North Shore, Oahu – April 2016
The sun shone brightly on North Shore beach, one of the world's most famous surfing spots. The waves broke in perfect sets, and the warm wind carried the scent of the sea and sunscreen.
Jason Gibbs and Ziva David paddled out to the outside, confidently crossing the break, boards under their arms.
They weren't professionals, but both learned quickly, and after a few weeks in Hawaii, surfing had become an unexpected passion.
Jason, lying on his board, looked at Ziva, who was a few meters to his left.
"Are you sure you want to take on this wave?"
Ziva smiled, her eyes shining with excitement.
"If you can do it, Gibbs, then I certainly can."
Jason laughed.
"Oh, so now we're competing?"
She raised an eyebrow.
— When aren't we?
Jason just shook his head, laughing, and positioned himself to catch the next wave.
A large wave began to form, and Jason and Ziva paddled hard, synchronizing the perfect moment to stand up on their boards.
Jason managed to stand up first, gliding smoothly over the wave's face, feeling the wind cut his cheek.
Ziva came right behind, maintaining her balance, but leaning a little too far.
— Watch out, Ziva! — Jason shouted.
But it was too late.
Her board flipped, and she fell straight into the water, disappearing into the foam of the wave.
Jason finished riding the wave and, as soon as he was out of the break, turned to look for Ziva.
Seconds later, she emerged from the water, coughing and pushing her wet hair back.
— That wave was treacherous. — she murmured, swimming back to her board.
Jason smiled slightly. — Or maybe you were a little aggressive.
— I prefer 'determined.'
Jason laughed and reached out to help Ziva back onto her board.
— Let's try again.
While they waited for another set of waves, a third surfer appeared beside them.
She had sun-kissed skin, dark brown hair tied in a ponytail, and a confident smile.
— You're new here. — she said, sitting on her board with ease.
Jason and Ziva exchanged glances before replying.
— Yes. We're learning. — Jason replied.
The woman smiled even wider.
— Well, you have potential… but her fall was kind of comical.
Ziva raised an eyebrow.
— If you don't know me, then you're not allowed to laugh at me yet.
The woman laughed and extended her hand to her.
— Kono Kalakaua. Now you know me.
Ziva smiled, shaking her hand.
"Ziva David."
Jason also shook Kono's hand.
"Jason Gibbs."
Kono tilted her head slightly at the sound of his name.
"Gibbs… that name sounds familiar."
Jason smiled slightly.
"I'm just a guy trying to surf."
Kono laughed.
"Of course you are."
As they chatted between the waves, Kono revealed a little about herself.
"I used to be a professional surfer. I almost made it to the world circuit."
Ziva raised an eyebrow.
"And why 'almost'?"
Kono sighed and looked at the horizon.
"My family has always had a strong tradition in law enforcement. I followed that path."
Jason narrowed his eyes.
"You're a police officer?"
Kono nodded.
"Yes. I work for Five-0."
Jason and Ziva exchanged a quick glance.
"The elite unit here?" Jason asked.
Kono smiled.
"The very same."
Ziva laughed.
"Funny… we heard about you guys recently."
Kono raised an eyebrow.
"And what did you hear?"
Jason shrugged.
"That you're basically a military squad disguised as a police force."
Kono laughed loudly.
"Well, I wouldn't say that's a wrong description."
After a few more waves and some laughter, they got out of the water and walked to a nearby kiosk to get something to drink.
While drinking coconut water, Kono looked at the two of them curiously.
"Now that I've told you a little about myself… and you guys? What do you do?"
Jason and Ziva exchanged glances.
"We're 'retired'," Ziva replied, with a slight smile.
Kono raised an eyebrow.
"Retired from what?"
Jason smiled slightly.
"Long story."
Kono laughed.
"Then I'll have to find out for myself."
Jason and Ziva knew they wouldn't be able to remain anonymous for long.
But for now, they just wanted to enjoy the day and their new friendship.
