Chapter 8 - Eye Overuse

My eyes began to open, Steel was standing over me, pacing back and forth, forth and back.

It was scary, I've lived with him for a few months now, I've never seen him scared, what happened.

"Steel, come down here real quick."

Steel immediately turned and walked out of the room.

As soon as he did that, I got up and the bed was small, to small. We didn't own any bed this big, not even Marcilene's.

Marcilene's bed was just big enough to fit her and only her.

Steel's bed was super big, it fit more than both me and Steel together, but after a while of not being able to sleep in the bed Steel would sleep in the Livingroom.

I've felt him wake on many occasions to get off the bed.

I looked around the room many times and saw the things around the room and saw a plain room, with one window, that didn't have any curtains and the wind blowing in to let it circulate air into the room then out again.

"How did I get here?"

I turned my head and saw a nightstand that was in the left peripheral is no longer there, I reach up to my left eye and try to grab at it.

At the same moment someone comes into the room again, with Steel right behind them.

The man is an older man, looking even older than Steel with his hair kept in a comb over and a beard long, but kept neat.

"Don't touch the eye patch, boy."

He says as soon as he turns his head to take sight of me, nearly grabbing the thing that, I only now notice is blocking out half my vision.

As of right now, my eye can't see even the color of their aura, nor can it see my hand that is right in front of it.

Steel is right behind him. Walking around the older man, that's a tad bit shorter than him, also wearing what seems to be sleeping garments.

"What happened to me?"

I ask not fully remembering what happened to me.

The man walks closer to me and takes my hand into his, moving myself from taking off the eye patch.

Steel looks at me and walks closer, the guy turns to Steel and backs away to let Steel get closer.

"You okay, Lazuli?"

Steel says as he gets closer and touches the side of my face, that I can't see his hand from.

"I feel fine, but what's on my face? What happened? Where are we?"

I start to stretch my neck and pop it as Steel looks at my face with worry.

"It seems that, since you are still on of the few people in the world with the Soul Eye, you can somewhat absorb Soul Energy through your eye."

"What does that mean?"

Steel takes a deep breathe.

"It means… I released to much Soul Energy into the air and your eye absorbed to much, making your eye suffer."

I tilt my head and as my mind focuses on my eye, I start to breathe a little more erratically.

"What does that mean? I'm I blind in my eye…?"

My hand wants to fly to pull the patch off my eye, but the guy told me not to.

My hand hovers just above my face.

Seriously thinking about pulling it off.

Steel doesn't look to me, he turns his head to look over toward Vic.

"He should be fine, but I'll have to say this Steel, you'll need to find him something to cover his eye."

Steel gives him a look of concern, then he looks toward me with the same look, then back toward Vic.

"Like what?"

Vic shrugs his shoulders, but a smile grows on his face as he does so:

"The Centennial Festival is coming along, many people will come from all across the other villages to celebrate it, especially since it's here this year."

Steel gives a smile, but it doesn't look like he's happy behind it.

"That's a good thing right, Lazuli?"

He says to me as he turns his head toward me again, his hand off my cheek.

He tilts his eye just a bit and the shift shows, he's looking at my eye.

'I know deep down he didn't mean it, and now that I'm not going to lose my eye, I think I'll be fine enough to continue on with my day.'

Those thoughts are true, but deep down I'm still scared.

I smile at Steel, great big smile, as if to mask my uncertainty about my eye.

"I'll be fine Steel, I don't think it's okay for you to get angry at yourself over the fact you didn't know about the Soul absorbing thing with my inherited Soul Ability."

My smiles wavers just a bit, as I hold it wide, deep down, I'm still scared as well.

Steel pauses and looks at me surprised, slowly after he pulls me into a hug, his muscles wrapping around my neck and sweezing enough to show that he loves me and cares and not to choke me out.

"I'm greatful. Thank Rodany that you were one of the children gifted to me even if not biological."

'Rodany..? Sounds like a magician back in my world… what was his name?'

Vic smiles at us from the place he's standing in.

"The people of Ken Nell have many different patches that can be used over your eyes. Like I said the festival is just around the corner, I'll check his eye weekly and if it becomes worse then I'll take it…"

My heart physically stopped at that.

"But I thought you said…"

"No I said you SHOULD be fine, there is still a small chance that you won't be able to see regularly with your other eye, but I just want you to know that, it's way more likely that you'll be able to see just fine."

I let out the air in my chest.

"Now back to what I was saying…"

He pauses for a quick second, then he smiles now that we are back to a nice topic.

The people of Ken Nell or very artistic with their things, they will more than likely have a nice eye patch for the boy."

He walks up to me, Steel, still crouched next to me, as Vic puts his hand on my head and ruffles it a bit, before moving a step away.

"But I will say this Steel, I understand what you told me before, you want to train him to be a person that can protect himself, but you were raised a different way, you were raised for war, don't make the same thing out of your boy."

I frow my eyebrows at that.

'What does that mean that Steel was raised for war. What war? The same one that they keep calling the Centennial War?'

Steel was looking at Vic, and Vic looked down at him.

"I understand what you are saying, but he said that he wants to protect his sister, I just want him to be able to go through with that, and not hate himself when he can't pick up his fists to fight if the time ever came…"

Steel told Vic, his voice full of determination and a drive for me to be strong.

A smile grows on my face at the heartfelt words he was saying about me.

Thankful that he as a father figure wants to guide me.

"Plus is it that bad if I want to brag about having a strong little boy?"

'And he's lost me.'

My face loses its smile and I give him a frown that lands on the back of his head, and bounces right off, since he can't see me.

"It's that right Lazuli?!"

Steel makes his hand land beside me on my shoulder and he gives one good squeeze on my shoulder.

Steel turns to look at me with a great big smile on his face, his own even wider than I could make right now, with great big teeth being shown.

"Yeah!"

I say with enthusiasm as I smile as big as I can back.

Vic looks happy at the two.

"Okay time to leave."

Or not…
