The violet light exploded from Ivy's hands and destroyed three trees at once.
She'd been trying to heal the broken oak branch. Just one branch. Instead her power had surged wild and angry and now half the courtyard was smoking.
"Again," Kai called from across the training ground. Like she hadn't just failed. Like destroying things was practice.
Ivy's hands shook as she tried to gather another branch. Her power was getting bigger every day. Stronger. Harder to contain. Sometimes she felt like a glass jar filling with water and nobody had told her what happened when it overflowed.
She focused on the branch. Tried to remember what Zara taught her about breathing. Ground yourself. Feel your center. Don't let emotion control the magic.
But her emotions were huge right now. Huge and angry and scared because Magnus's bounty had brought hunters pouring toward the Free Lands like water through a broken dam.
The branch in her hand started glowing violet.
