Chapter 27 - THE AWAKENING

The clearing fell into stunned silence.

Blood dripped from the deep claw marks across Varkos's face.

Dark red streaks ran down through his thick gray fur, staining the ground beneath him.

His remaining golden eye burned like fire.

Every wolf in the clearing felt it.

The shift in his energy.

The anger.

Marcus swallowed hard.

"…that might've made him mad."

Rowan stared at the wounded Alpha.

"You think?"

Lena whispered quietly,

"He's never been injured like that before."

Across the clearing, Aria struggled to push herself up.

Pain shot through her shoulder where Varkos's jaws had crushed down.

Her breathing was uneven.

Her vision flickered slightly.

But her wolf refused to stay down.

Up.

Aria growled softly and forced herself back onto her paws.

Across from her, Varkos slowly shook his massive head.

Blood sprayed from his fur.

Then he looked at her again.

This time there was no curiosity in his gaze.

Only raw Alpha fury.

His growl rolled across the clearing like distant thunder.

Low.

Dangerous.

The surrounding wolves immediately lowered their heads.

Even the rogue army could feel the storm building inside their Alpha.

Kael's voice came out quietly.

"He's about to end this."

Marcus looked at him quickly.

"Then stop it!"

Kael's jaw clenched.

"If I step in now, the challenge is broken."

Marcus blinked.

"So?!"

Kael's eyes stayed locked on Aria.

"She'll never earn their respect."

In the clearing, Varkos began walking forward again.

Slow.

Heavy steps that shook the ground beneath him.

His voice echoed in the mind-link again.

But now it sounded darker.

You injured me.

Aria's chest rose and fell as she steadied herself.

You attacked first.

Another growl rumbled from his chest.

You should have stayed down.

Aria's wolf lowered slightly, ready.

You should have finished me.

The wolves surrounding them stirred.

No one spoke.

But the tension was unbearable.

Varkos suddenly stopped walking.

Then—

He threw his head back and howled.

The sound exploded across the mountains.

It was pure dominance.

Pure Alpha command.

The two hundred wolves behind him immediately howled back.

The ground seemed to vibrate with their voices.

Aria felt the sound slam into her chest like a wave.

Her legs nearly buckled.

Marcus grabbed Rowan's arm.

"…what just happened?"

Alder answered calmly.

"He's drawing power from his pack."

Rowan frowned.

"That's possible?"

"For strong Alphas."

Marcus groaned.

"Of course it is."

In the clearing, Varkos lowered his head again.

His wounded eye slowly opened.

Blood still streamed down his face.

But his gaze had grown even more terrifying.

Now, he said.

And he lunged.

This time Aria barely saw him move.

The massive wolf crashed into her with overwhelming force.

His claws tore across her side as they hit the ground.

Pain ripped through her body.

Her wolf cried out.

Varkos's jaws snapped again.

Aria twisted away just in time, but his teeth caught her hind leg.

She was thrown violently across the clearing.

Her body slammed into the dirt.

Gasps erupted from the watching wolves.

Marcus shouted,

"ARIA!"

She tried to stand—

But her injured leg trembled beneath her.

Blood dripped onto the ground.

Varkos stalked toward her again.

Slow.

Patient.

Like a hunter finishing wounded prey.

You are strong, his voice echoed.

But strength alone is not enough.

Aria's breathing grew heavier.

Her wolf struggled to rise again.

Get up, the voice inside her growled.

"I'm trying."

Varkos was only a few steps away now.

His shadow stretched across her body.

It ends now, he said.

Aria forced herself up again.

Her legs shook violently.

But she stood.

Across the clearing, Marcus whispered,

"…she can't keep doing this."

Rowan nodded grimly.

"She's exhausted."

Kael's fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Alder watched quietly.

But his silver eyes were focused intensely on Aria.

Something was changing.

In the clearing, Varkos lunged again.

Aria tried to dodge—

But her injured leg slowed her.

His massive paw slammed into her chest.

She crashed onto her back.

The giant Alpha pinned her to the ground.

His enormous jaws hovered inches from her throat.

The clearing went silent.

Aria's chest heaved beneath him.

Her wolf struggled.

But Varkos's weight was crushing.

His voice echoed quietly in the mind-link.

You fought well.

His jaws lowered closer to her neck.

But you are not ready to lead.

Marcus stepped forward instinctively.

"NO—"

Kael grabbed him instantly.

"Wait."

Marcus stared at him.

"He's about to kill her!"

But Kael's eyes were locked on Aria.

"Look."

Aria's wolf had stopped struggling.

Not because she was giving up.

Because something inside her was changing.

Her wolf's eyes slowly began to glow brighter.

Silver light flickered beneath her fur.

A strange energy pulsed through her body.

Varkos noticed immediately.

His golden eyes narrowed.

What is this?

The air in the clearing suddenly felt heavier.

The watching wolves shifted nervously.

They could feel it too.

A presence.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Aria's wolf growled softly beneath him.

But this growl was different.

It wasn't defiance.

It was command.

A deep silver glow spread through her fur.

Marcus stared wide-eyed.

"…do you see that?"

Rowan nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Alder's voice was quiet.

"It's happening."

Kael whispered,

"What is?"

Alder didn't look away from Aria.

"Her true power."

Varkos suddenly stepped back.

Instinct forced him to release her.

Even the giant Alpha felt it.

The energy pouring out of her body.

Aria slowly stood again.

Her injuries still bled.

Her leg still trembled.

But her wolf looked different now.

Stronger.

Her eyes glowed with brilliant silver light.

The surrounding wolves began shifting uneasily.

Some stepped backward.

Others lowered their heads without meaning to.

Marcus whispered,

"…why are they bowing?"

Rowan looked around the clearing.

He was right.

Dozens of wolves were lowering themselves.

Instinctively.

Without being told.

Varkos stared at Aria in disbelief.

For the first time—

The giant Alpha looked uncertain.

And Aria's wolf took one step forward.

The ground beneath her paws cracked.

Then her voice echoed across every wolf's mind.

Louder.

Stronger.

More powerful than before.

Now it's my turn. 🐺
