The clearing felt different.
Quieter.
Heavier.
Like the forest itself was holding its breath.
Kael held Aria in his arms as the last traces of silver light faded from her skin.
Her body was still.
Too still.
Marcus hovered nearby, panic written all over his face.
"She's not waking up."
Rowan frowned, kneeling beside them.
"She's breathing."
"Barely," Marcus snapped.
Kael's jaw tightened.
"Move."
The command was low but sharp.
The wolves around them stepped aside immediately.
Without hesitation, Kael carried Aria toward the pack house.
His steps were fast.
Controlled.
But there was urgency in them.
Behind him, the others followed.
Varkos. Rowan. Marcus. Lena. Alder.
No one spoke.
The weight of what had just happened pressed down on all of them.
Inside the pack house, Kael placed Aria gently on a large bed.
Her face was pale.
Her breathing uneven.
Marcus ran a hand through his hair.
"I don't like this."
Rowan crossed his arms.
"No one does."
Lena stepped closer.
"She used too much power."
Alder stood near the window, his silver eyes distant.
"She used power she does not understand."
Kael didn't move away from the bed.
His gaze remained fixed on Aria.
"When will she wake up?"
Alder didn't answer immediately.
That silence was enough to make Marcus nervous.
"…Alder."
The older man finally spoke.
"That depends."
Marcus threw his hands up.
"On what?!"
Alder turned slowly.
"On whether her body accepts what she has awakened."
The room went still.
Rowan frowned.
"…and if it doesn't?"
Alder's voice was calm.
"Then her body will reject it."
Marcus blinked.
"…reject it how?"
No one answered.
And that was worse.
Kael's voice cut through the silence.
"She won't die."
It wasn't a question.
It was a statement.
A promise.
Alder met his gaze.
"That is not guaranteed."
The air in the room shifted.
Dangerous.
Tense.
Kael stepped forward slightly.
"Say that again."
Rowan immediately moved between them.
"Not now."
Marcus nodded quickly.
"Definitely not now."
Alder didn't react.
He simply looked back at Aria.
"She has awakened something ancient."
His voice softened slightly.
"But she is still human."
Lena whispered,
"She's not just human anymore."
Alder nodded.
"Exactly."
Silence fell again.
Then—
A small movement.
Everyone froze.
Aria's fingers twitched.
Marcus gasped.
"She moved!"
Kael was already at her side.
"Aria."
Her eyelids fluttered slightly.
Slow.
Heavy.
Then—
They opened.
Her silver eyes flickered faintly before returning to normal.
Confusion filled her gaze.
"…what happened?"
Marcus let out a long breath.
"Oh thank goodness."
Rowan smiled slightly.
"Welcome back."
Aria pushed herself up slightly.
But pain shot through her body instantly.
She winced.
"…okay. That hurts."
Kael steadied her.
"Don't move."
She looked at him.
Then around the room.
Memories rushed back.
Darius.
The fight.
The power.
Her expression changed.
"I felt it."
Alder stepped closer.
"What did you feel?"
Aria hesitated.
Then said quietly,
"Everything."
The room went still.
She looked at her hands.
"They were all there."
Marcus frowned.
"…who?"
Aria's voice dropped.
"The wolves."
Rowan blinked.
"All of them?"
She nodded slowly.
"I could feel them."
Her breathing quickened slightly.
"Their fear… their strength… their voices…"
She looked up.
"And they listened."
Silence.
Heavy.
Alder studied her carefully.
"You touched the bond."
Aria frowned.
"The bond?"
"The connection between a Luna and her pack."
Marcus whispered,
"That sounds powerful."
Rowan nodded.
"It is."
Aria swallowed.
"It didn't feel… stable."
Kael's voice was quiet.
"It wasn't."
She looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Kael's eyes darkened slightly.
"You collapsed."
Aria exhaled slowly.
"Right."
Alder stepped forward again.
"You forced the bond open."
Aria frowned.
"I didn't mean to."
"That does not matter."
His voice remained calm.
"You did it."
Marcus raised a hand.
"So… what does that mean exactly?"
Alder looked at Aria.
"It means your power is no longer dormant."
Rowan's expression shifted.
"So it's active now?"
"Yes."
Marcus blinked.
"…is that good or bad?"
Alder answered simply.
"Both."
Aria leaned back slightly.
Trying to process everything.
"So I'm stronger now."
Alder nodded.
"Yes."
She frowned.
"But I can't control it."
"Yes."
Marcus sighed.
"Of course."
Rowan rubbed his chin.
"So if she uses it again like that…"
Alder finished the thought.
"She may not survive it."
Silence.
Heavy.
Unavoidable.
Aria looked down at her hands again.
Then clenched them slightly.
"I don't have a choice."
Kael's voice was firm.
"You do."
She shook her head.
"No."
She looked up at him.
At all of them.
"Darius is coming."
No one argued.
"He has hundreds of wolves."
Still silence.
"And more will follow him."
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Unfortunately, yes."
Aria took a breath.
"If I don't use this power…"
Her voice steadied.
"…we lose."
The truth of it settled into the room.
Cold.
Unforgiving.
Varkos spoke for the first time.
"Then you learn to control it."
All eyes turned to him.
Aria frowned.
"How?"
Varkos's golden eye gleamed.
"The same way all warriors learn."
Marcus tilted his head.
"…how's that?"
Varkos's voice was simple.
"By fighting."
Rowan sighed.
"I had a feeling he'd say that."
Alder didn't disagree.
"It is the fastest way."
Kael looked at Aria.
"You're not ready."
Aria met his gaze.
"I don't have time to be ready."
Their eyes locked.
Tension.
Understanding.
Conflict.
Then—
A loud howl echoed from outside.
Sharp.
Urgent.
Everyone turned.
Another howl followed.
Then another.
Marcus frowned.
"…that doesn't sound good."
Rowan moved toward the door.
"That's the perimeter."
A wolf burst into the room seconds later.
Breathing hard.
"They've reached the outer ridge!"
Silence slammed into the room.
Aria slowly swung her legs off the bed.
Kael stepped in front of her.
"No."
She stood anyway.
"Yes."
Her voice was calm now.
Steady.
Dangerously steady.
"They're not waiting."
The wolf nodded.
"At least a hundred… maybe more."
Marcus whispered,
"They came faster."
Rowan looked back at Aria.
"…what do we do?"
Aria took a slow breath.
Her eyes sharpened.
And for the first time since waking—
There was no hesitation in her voice.
"We fight."
Outside—
The distant howls of Darius's army echoed closer.
And this time—
They weren't stopping at the border.
