Chapter 45 - Fractures

The forest didn't feel the same anymore.

Even after the masked man disappeared, something lingered.

A pressure.

Invisible.

Unshakable.

Alex sat on the ground, one knee pressed into the dirt, his breathing still uneven. The power from the override had completely faded, leaving behind a hollow weakness that crawled through his muscles.

It wasn't just exhaustion. It felt like something had been taken from him. Kael crouched beside him, watching closely.

"Can you stand?"

Alex let out a slow breath.

"…Yeah."

It wasn't entirely true. But he forced himself up anyway. His legs trembled slightly, but they held. That was enough.

Behind them, the rest of the group was slowly recovering. Bren had managed to sit up, though his expression was darker than usual.

No one spoke for a few seconds. Then—

"What the hell was that?" one of the adventurers finally asked.

No one answered. Because no one knew.

Bren pushed himself to his feet, wincing slightly.

"…That wasn't a monster," he said.

Kael nodded.

"No."

Alex stared at the ground where the man had stood.

"…He said there's only supposed to be one system."

That got everyone's attention. Bren frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Alex shook his head.

"I don't know."

But the system flickered again—faint, unstable.

System Status: Recovering

Core Stability: 61%

Warning: External Influence Residue Detected

Alex's expression tightened.

Residue…?

So whatever that man did— It hadn't fully disappeared.

Kael noticed his reaction.

"It's still affecting you, isn't it?"

Alex hesitated.

"…Yeah."

"Bad?"

Alex thought about it. The pain was fading.

But something deeper… Wasn't.

"It's like… it touched the system itself," he said.

Kael didn't respond immediately. Then—

"That's not good."

"Yeah. I figured."

Bren stepped closer.

"Can you still fight?"

Alex met his gaze.

"…If I have to."

That was enough for now. Bren exhaled slowly.

"Then we move."

"Back to the road. No more detours."

No one argued.

The group began moving again, slower this time. Injured members were supported, and no one strayed far from the center.

But the tension didn't leave. If anything— It grew. Alex walked in silence, his thoughts racing.

One system.

A refined version.

Not supposed to exist.

Every word echoed in his mind.

And then— Another thought.

Compatibility: 87%.

His steps slowed slightly.

Kael noticed.

"What is it?"

Alex glanced at him.

"…He's like me."

Kael frowned.

"Not exactly."

"No," Alex said quietly. "Stronger."

That much was obvious. Even with the override— Even with everything he had—

Alex hadn't been winning. He had barely kept up. And that was when the man wasn't trying.

Kael's expression darkened.

"Then next time, we don't fight him."

Alex didn't respond. Because deep down—

He knew. There would be a next time.

And running wouldn't always be an option.

The system flickered again.

Stronger this time.

New Objective Detected

Primary Task Updated

Alex stopped walking.

"…Wait."

The group paused.

"What now?" Bren asked.

Alex stared into nothing as the system interface expanded in front of him.

Primary Objective: Stabilize System Core

Sub-Objective: Locate Origin Fragment

Status: Unknown Location

Alex's eyes narrowed.

"Origin… fragment?"

Kael crossed his arms.

"That doesn't sound simple."

"No," Alex said.

"It doesn't."

Bren looked between them.

"Explain."

Alex hesitated. Then—

"My system… isn't complete."

Silence.

"He said it too," Alex continued.

"Incomplete."

Kael nodded slowly.

"And now it's giving you a way to fix that."

"Looks like it."

Bren exhaled sharply.

"Great."

"Another unknown."

Alex almost smiled.

"Yeah. But this time…"

He looked ahead.

"…it's ours."

The group started moving again. But now—

There was a direction.

Not just survival.

Not just fighting.

A goal.

Somewhere out there— Was something connected to the system. Something important enough to be called its origin.

And if that man knew about it— Then it wasn't just a chance. It was a race.

The system pulsed faintly.

Warning

Host Progress Now Monitored

Alex's steps slowed for just a fraction of a second.

"…Monitored?"

Kael glanced at him.

"What now?"

Alex shook his head.

"Nothing."

But it wasn't nothing. Because now— It wasn't just about getting stronger. It wasn't just about surviving.

Something had noticed him.

Something bigger than the system itself.

And it was watching.

As the group moved deeper toward the road, the forest slowly returned to life. The wind picked up again. Leaves rustled. Distant sounds of wildlife crept back in.

But for Alex— None of it felt normal anymore.

Because now he knew the truth.

He wasn't just someone who got a system.

He wasn't just a lucky survivor.

He was something that— Was never supposed to exist.

And whatever created the system…

Was starting to realize that mistake.
