Chapter 46 - The Shadow of the Origin

The forest gradually gave way to a narrow dirt road, but the sense of unease never left Alex. Every step he took was heavy, measured, his instincts screaming that something larger than the masked figure still lingered. It wasn't just a threat—it was a presence. Cold. Patient. Observing.

Kael walked beside him, eyes scanning the treeline. Even after all the battles they had endured, he seemed unusually tense.

"Something about him…" Kael muttered quietly. "He wasn't just a test. He wanted to see if you—" He stopped, swallowing. "…if you're a threat to whatever made your system."

Alex frowned. The system interface flickered in his vision, showing faint glitches. He could feel it reacting strangely, like a magnet being pulled toward something invisible.

System Notification

Primary Objective: Stabilize System Core

Sub-Objective: Locate Origin Fragment

Distance: Unknown

External Influence Detected

Alex exhaled slowly. "It's coming from somewhere. And apparently, I'm being tracked."

Bren, walking a few paces behind, raised an eyebrow. "Tracked? Like a bounty? Or more like a ticking bomb?"

Alex didn't answer immediately. There wasn't time to explain yet. He was feeling it—an almost magnetic pull inside his core. The system wasn't just a tool anymore; it was alive in ways he had never imagined.

The group walked in tense silence for a few minutes. Even the injured adventurers moved cautiously, their eyes darting into the shadows. It was as if the forest itself had become an enemy.

Suddenly, the air shifted. The sound of rustling leaves, too soft to identify, brushed against their ears. Kael's hand went to his sword instinctively.

"Stop." Alex held up a hand. He closed his eyes for a moment, letting Battle Awareness Lv.2 scan the area.

Faint traces appeared in his vision: a series of almost invisible energy trails, pulsing with a rhythm that mirrored his own heartbeat. Something—or someone—was ahead. Watching. Waiting.

System Alert

Unknown Energy Signature Detected

Origin Fragment Nearby? Possibly Connected to Host

Caution: High Risk

Alex's pulse quickened. He had to move, but rushing blindly could be fatal. He motioned for Bren and Kael to follow his lead.

As they advanced carefully, the faint glow of the origin fragment began to coalesce in his vision—a shimmering light deep within the dense trees, barely visible but undeniably there.

"It's close," Alex whispered. "And it's strong. The system is reacting like it's… alive."

Kael glanced at him sharply. "Alive? You mean, like… thinking?"

Alex shook his head slowly. "Not thinking. Feeling. And judging."

The closer they got, the more the air seemed to vibrate. The system pulsed violently in Alex's vision, almost screaming, and he could feel the residual influence of the masked man intensifying around him. The system's energy, his own energy, and some unknown foreign energy all collided inside him.

Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows—a silhouette too tall and rigid to be human. Its outline glimmered faintly, like liquid silver flowing in the moonlight.

Alex froze. The energy pulses were coming directly from it.

"This… this is it," he muttered. "The origin fragment. And it's… conscious."

The figure stepped closer. Light bent around it, distorting the forest behind. No face. No features. Just a smooth, reflective surface, pulsing rhythmically like a heartbeat.

Bren and Kael raised their weapons. "What do we do?" Bren asked, tension evident in his voice.

Alex shook his head. "Not fight… yet. I have to connect."

The system interface glowed brighter than ever.

System Notification

Origin Fragment Detected: Interaction Required

Warning: Host Compatibility Critical

Outcome Uncertain

Alex's hands trembled slightly as he reached forward. The fragment pulsed once, then thrice, as if testing him. Then, the energy flared violently, throwing him back a few steps. Pain shot through every fiber of his body, his muscles screaming.

"Alex!" Kael shouted, rushing to his side.

"I… have to endure it," Alex gritted through the pain. "It's the only way."

The system pulsed in resonance with the fragment. His vision blurred, then sharpened beyond human limits. He could see threads of energy connecting the fragment, the masked man's residual influence, and his own system. All of it tangled in a complex web.

And then, a voice—soft, deep, almost ancient—echoed through his mind:

"You were not meant to exist. Yet here you are."

Alex gritted his teeth. "And I'm not leaving until I understand why."

The fragment shimmered brighter, reacting to his will. The system interface glowed around him, unstable but responsive.

Kael looked at him nervously. "Alex… don't push too far."

Alex didn't answer. His mind focused entirely on the fragment. This wasn't just power. This was knowledge. The secret behind the system. The truth of why he had it.

And somewhere far away, the masked man had already sensed this.

The game was no longer a test.

It was a war for the origin itself.
