Chapter 48 - The One Who Interferes

Darkness swallowed everything.

No sound.

No pain.

No system.

For the first time since Alex had awakened the system…

There was nothing.

And that was what terrified him the most.

Did it… fail?

A flicker.

Then— A voice.

Not the system.

Not the masked man.

Something else.

Something deeper.

Older.

"…You forced it."

Alex's consciousness stirred.

Slowly.

Pain followed immediately—sharp, overwhelming, flooding every part of him at once. He gasped. And the world came rushing back.

The forest.

The fragment.

Kael shouting his name.

"Alex! Wake up!"

Alex's eyes snapped open. His body was on the ground, surrounded by faint, flickering light. The fragment in front of him had dimmed, no longer pulsing as violently as before. But something had changed. He could feel it. Inside him.

Not just power— Structure.

Like something had been added to the system. And something else had been… blocked.

System Rebooting…

Alex pushed himself up slightly, groaning.

"Don't move," Kael said, kneeling beside him.

"You almost died."

"…Almost?" Alex muttered weakly.

Bren crossed his arms, watching closely.

"That thing nearly tore you apart."

Alex let out a breath.

"Yeah… I felt that."

The system flickered again.

Synchronization Status: 51%

Core Stability: 78%

Foreign Interference Detected

Alex's eyes narrowed.

"Interference…"

He looked back at the fragment. It was still there. But weaker. Like something had interrupted the connection before it could finish.

"I didn't complete it," Alex said.

Kael frowned.

"That's obvious."

"No," Alex said, shaking his head slightly.

"I mean… something stopped it."

Silence fell. Because that was worse. Much worse. Bren's expression darkened.

"You're saying that wasn't just the system?"

Alex didn't answer right away. Because he remembered the voice.

"You forced it."

That wasn't the masked man.

It wasn't the system either.

It was something else entirely.

The system flared again.

New Condition Applied

Partial Synchronization Achieved

Sealed Ability Detected

Unlock Condition: Unknown

Alex blinked.

"Sealed ability…"

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"Is that good or bad?"

Alex let out a tired laugh.

"At this point? Both."

He slowly stood up again, his body still weak but more stable than before. The difference was clear. Even without the override—He felt stronger.

Sharper.

More aware.

But also— Watched.

The system flickered again.

Warning

External Observer Active

Alex's expression tightened.

"Yeah… definitely watched."

Kael's grip on his sword tightened.

"Explain."

Alex looked at him.

"There's something else."

"Not the masked guy."

"Something bigger."

Bren muttered under his breath.

"Great. Just what we needed."

Before anyone could say more— The fragment reacted again. A faint pulse. Weaker than before. But still there. Alex turned toward it.

"It's not done," he said.

Kael frowned.

"You're not seriously thinking about touching that again."

Alex hesitated. Just for a moment. Then shook his head.

"Not now."

Even he wasn't that reckless. Not after what just happened. But something else caught his attention. The ground beneath the fragment… Was cracked. Not from the fight.

From something deeper.

A pattern.

Faint.

But visible now that the energy had calmed.

Alex crouched slightly, brushing away dirt.

Lines.

Symbols.

Not random.

Structured.

Like— A map.

"…Wait," he said.

Bren stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Alex traced one of the lines with his finger.

"It's not just a fragment."

"It's a marker."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"For what?"

Alex looked up.

"…For more."

Silence.

The realization settled heavily over the group.

This wasn't the origin. Not fully. Just a piece.

A fragment pointing to something bigger.

Something hidden.

The system pulsed again.

New Objective Updated

Locate Additional Fragments

Progress: 1 / ?

Bren let out a long breath.

"You've got to be kidding me."

Alex stood up slowly.

"No."

"This makes sense."

Kael crossed his arms.

"Explain."

Alex looked at them both.

"If there was only supposed to be one system…"

"And it broke…"

"Then it wasn't destroyed."

"It was split."

The forest felt colder again. Like the truth itself carried weight. Bren muttered,

"And now you're collecting the pieces."

Alex didn't deny it. Because that's exactly what this was. And worse— If he knew it…

Then so did the masked man.

The system flickered one last time.

Alert

Another Fragment Activated

Distance: Unknown

Direction: Calculating…

Alex's eyes widened slightly.

"…We're not the only ones searching."

Kael's expression darkened.

"Of course we're not."

Because somewhere out there— Another piece had awakened. And this time— They wouldn't be the first to reach it.

As the system finalized the direction—

One last message appeared:

Warning

Next Fragment is already claimed.
