Chapter 49 - Already Claimed

The words burned in Alex's vision.

Warning

Next Fragment is already claimed.

Silence fell over the group.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Something heavier.

Realization.

Kael was the first to speak.

"…Claimed by who?"

Alex didn't answer. Because he already knew.

There was only one person who made sense.

"The masked guy," Bren muttered.

Alex nodded slowly.

"Yeah."

The system pulsed again, as if confirming it.

Target: Fragment Host Identified

Status: Active

Threat Level: Critical

Kael let out a quiet breath.

"So it's not just about finding fragments."

Alex shook his head.

"No."

"It's about getting to them first."

Bren tightened his grip on his weapon.

"And if we don't?"

Alex met his gaze.

"…Then we fight someone stronger than before."

No one liked that answer. But no one argued.

Because they had already seen what that meant. The forest felt different now. Not just quiet. Tense. Like something had shifted.

Alex looked back at the fragment behind them.

Dim.

Inactive.

Left behind.

"We move," he said.

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"Just like that?"

Alex nodded.

"We don't have time."

The system flickered again.

Direction Locked

Distance: Far

Estimated Time: Unknown

"Far," Bren muttered. "Of course it is."

Alex started walking. Not rushing. But not hesitating either. Kael followed immediately.

The others exchanged glances— Then moved too. Because whether they liked it or not— They were part of this now.

Hours passed. The forest slowly thinned, giving way to rough terrain and scattered rock formations. No one spoke much. Everyone was thinking the same thing. If he's already there… What are we walking into?

Alex's mind wasn't quiet either.

Fragments.

Systems.

Only one allowed.

It didn't add up.

If the system wanted balance— Why guide him to more fragments?

Unless— It wasn't trying to fix itself.

It was trying to complete something else.

The thought lingered.

Uncomfortable.

Unanswered.

The system pulsed faintly again.

Passive Effect Gained

Fragment Resonance (Partial)

Nearby Fragments Increase System Activity

Alex's steps slowed slightly.

"…It's reacting."

Kael glanced at him.

"To what?"

"The next fragment."

Bren frowned.

"We're still far, right?"

Alex nodded.

"Yeah."

"But it's getting stronger."

That wasn't reassuring. As the sun began to set, the group reached a narrow pass between large rock formations. The path ahead was tight. Perfect for an ambush. Kael stopped.

"…This is a bad place."

Bren nodded.

"Too narrow."

Alex didn't argue. His instincts were already screaming.

Battle Awareness activated.

Everything sharpened.

The rocks.

The shadows.

The silence.

Then— He saw it.

A faint distortion.

Not movement.

Not exactly.

But something off.

"Stop," Alex said quietly.

The group froze.

"What is it?" Bren asked.

Alex didn't answer immediately. He stepped forward slowly. Eyes locked ahead. Then—

A voice echoed through the pass.

"…You're slower than I expected."

The temperature dropped instantly. Kael's hand went to his sword.

"…He's here."

The figure stepped out from the shadows.

No mask this time.

No disguise.

Just the man.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Waiting.

Alex's chest tightened.

"You got the fragment," he said.

The man nodded slightly.

"Yes."

A faint glow pulsed around him. Stronger than before.

More stable.

More complete.

"…And you didn't finish yours," he added.

Alex didn't deny it.

"Something interrupted it."

The man's eyes flickered slightly.

"…Interesting."

A pause.

Then— He stepped forward. And the pressure hit instantly. Heavier than before.

Stronger. Like the space itself resisted him.

Kael took a step back.

"…He's stronger."

Bren cursed under his breath.

"No kidding."

Alex didn't move. Not this time. Because now—He understood something. This wasn't random. This wasn't chance.

"You knew," Alex said.

The man stopped.

"What?"

"You knew where the fragments were."

Silence. Then—

"…Of course I did."

Alex's grip tightened.

"How?"

The man looked at him calmly.

"Because I've already done this before."

The words hit harder than any attack. Kael frowned.

"…What does that mean?"

But Alex already understood. Or at least—Part of it.

"You've been collecting them," Alex said.

"Completing your system."

The man didn't deny it.

"Yes."

"And now," he continued,

"I'm finishing the last variable."

His eyes locked onto Alex.

Cold.

Certain.

"You."

The system exploded in Alex's vision.

CRITICAL ALERT

Host Targeted

Combat Probability: Extreme

Alex exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

"I figured."

The man raised his hand. Not testing anymore. Not holding back.

"Then you understand," he said.

"This ends here."

Alex stepped forward. Despite everything. Despite the difference in power. Because now—Running wasn't an option. And neither was losing.

His system flared violently.

New Condition Met

Sealed Ability Reacting

Alex's eyes widened slightly.

Now?

The man moved.

Faster than before.

Stronger.

More decisive.

But this time— Alex didn't hesitate. Because whatever was sealed inside him— Was about to break.

As the attack closed in— The system flashed one final message:

Sealed Ability Unlock Condition Met

Do you accept the cost?
