The battle grew increasingly fierce. If the original work had five leviathan ships entering this World, there were now at least ten. Both in quantity and quality, they far exceeded the movie version.
Unlike the original story, Black Widow and Captain America failed to successfully seize an alien Flyer!
Black Widow managed to hijack a Chitauri Flyer, but before she could steady herself, several other Flyers rammed into her, knocking her off.
The situation became more critical as the wormhole continued to expand. No one knew what else was behind it, Harry included.
Given the current situation, it was hard to believe that just a few Avengers could close the wormhole in time. Many parts of Manhattan had been reduced to ruins, and even half of the Osborn Tower had collapsed.
If the wormhole kept expanding and Chitauri space battleships charged into Earth, it would be a disaster.
Frank and his team were almost out of micro-Rockets and ammunition. Ordinary RPGs were not very efficient against the leviathan ships.
Under Norman's command, the casualty numbers for the National Guard began to rise, and the tide of battle started to shift.
According to the combat command channel and the evacuation and damage reports from ctOS, Harry knew he had to end this fight.
"We have to close that wormhole!" Captain America shouted to Harry in the sky.
"I know." Harry looked at Dr. Otto, who was about to reach the top of Stark Tower, escorted by Frank's squad.
Peter circled nimbly around Doctor Octopus. Besides constantly climbing, the mechanical arms would occasionally catapult Peter outward.
"Teamwork, this is great! Are we a superhero group now?" Peter said while kicking a Chitauri away.
"I'm a researcher, not a superhero. Kid, you really need to focus!" Dr. Otto said.
Soon, under everyone's escort, Dr. Otto reached the top floor of Stark Tower!
"Professor Selvig, we need to close the wormhole!" Otto said as he turned on the detection equipment and took over the local computer. "Did you set up any failsafes or anything?"
Selvig snapped out of it as if ending a sleepwalk.
"Dr. Otto? You were captured too? Wait... what have I done?"
Otto's hands moved rapidly over the computer. "Professor, there's a protective shield around the device. I need to know how to stop this thing! Where did you get such a terrifying energy source!"
The energy of the Tesseract was infinite. The way it pierced through space to open the wormhole was incompatible with any known theory.
"The scepter! Loki's scepter, that thing might be able to close the wormhole!" Selvig looked down. "It's right there!"
Otto didn't have time to look and shouted, "Spider-Man!"
As soon as he spoke, the scepter was thrown up by Peter, and the mechanical tentacles firmly caught the Mind Stone scepter.
"Happy to be of service, Doctor!" Peter landed beside the doctor. "Now what?"
The mechanical arms showed considerable interest in the scepter, circling around it.
"This scepter is imbued with a very powerful energy. Two things that defy the laws of science in one day?" Dr. Otto muttered to himself.
"Harry, I'm in position. We can close the wormhole!"
Otto's voice reached everyone's ears. Just then, Nick patched into the Avengers' communication channel.
"Avengers, there's a plane carrying a nuclear missile flying toward Manhattan!"
It didn't surprise Harry at all that HYDRA would launch a nuke regardless of the situation. To them, the explosion would eliminate many threats and cause the United States to fall completely.
As for whether they thought about how to deal with the wormhole? Harry felt they probably hadn't.
According to Dr. Otto's on-site observations, a nuke couldn't penetrate the shield around the Tesseract, so it naturally couldn't close the wormhole.
"How many minutes?" Tony asked.
"Three minutes!"
"I'll handle it. Osborn? There's a nuke flying this way!"
Tony immediately planned to divert all power to the thrusters. He wanted to change the nuke's course and send it into the wormhole!
"Doctor, stabilize the wormhole first. There's a nuke that needs handling!" Harry said as he stuffed an Arc Star into a leviathan ship's mouth.
"Seems we're on the same page?" Tony said while controlling the missile's flight path. "Jarvis, put all power into steering."
Harry looked at the battle; it had to end. This nuke was the most important part of this fight.
"Doctor, we'll send the nuke through. Close the wormhole the moment we're back."
Harry looked at Norman. "Father, we need to handle that nuke personally."
Norman was no innocent soul; he understood some things without Harry having to explain them.
The final blow had to be delivered by them.
The father and son each picked up a case from the ground, shared a smile, and chased after the nuke!
"We really are on the same page. Out of fuel, right? Looks like I win another round—but consider this one on the house."
Just before entering the wormhole, Harry's voice rang in Tony's ear. He found the voice surprisingly pleasant to hear!
Under the watch of the entire World, the three of them jointly controlled the nuke and completed the turn—
The nuke was sent into the wormhole!
Passing through the wormhole, the other side was the boundless starry sky, a place of deathly silence.
The Chitauri army Harry witnessed in space was also much larger than the scene in the movie.
In the movie, Tony only saw one mothership, but Harry saw dense clusters of various warships alongside the mothership.
No wonder Tony developed anxiety because of this. Seeing that army, Harry also felt his scalp go numb.
These Chitauri were flying toward the wormhole in an endless stream. Unlike the original story, these Chitauri could definitely catch Tony before he fell back out of the wormhole.
The father and son looked at each other and threw the cases toward the Chitauri army. The cases split open instantly, and two unique devices attached themselves to the nuclear warhead.
Harry thought: I'll give you something even bigger.
"Heading back!"
Harry hoisted Tony, and the father and son flew madly toward the closing wormhole!
This was the fastest his heart had beaten since he transmigrated! Most of what happened before had been close calls without real danger, but this time, he had truly come to another World!
A World without life, a dead World.
And behind him, a hydrogen bomb with a yield comparable to the Tsar Bomba was exploding—
Even though he knew he would make it, Harry's heart couldn't stop pounding.
Whoosh!
Passing through the wormhole, the sound of rushing air returned to his ears. They were back!
The whole World was cheering for this!
In the sky, Chitauri equipment that had lost its ship's command crashed toward the streets, and the soldiers entered the phase of cleaning up the battlefield.
Looking at this scene, Harry was in a great mood: it was time to start harvesting.
