Chapter 10 - The bond strengthens

The words still echoed in the hall.

'She's the source.'

Lyra stood frozen at the center of the chamber, her pulse roaring in her ears. The invisible force around her hadn't disappeared—it lingered, pressing lightly against her skin, as if the Elders were still testing her… measuring her.

Judging her.

Her chest tightened.

And then—

A hand closed around hers.

Warm.

Firm.

Grounding.

Lyra's breath hitched as she looked to her side.

Kyle.

His silver eyes were locked on the Elders, sharp and dangerous, but his grip on her hand tightened slightly—as if silently reminding her she wasn't alone.

"Release her," he said, his voice low but commanding.

The air trembled.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then—

The invisible hold snapped.

Lyra staggered slightly, but Kyle was already there, steadying her before she could fall. His hand slid to her waist, holding her just a second longer than necessary.

"You okay?" he murmured, his voice softer now, meant only for her.

Lyra nodded, though her heart was racing for a completely different reason.

Before she could respond—

Rowan stepped forward, placing himself on her other side.

Too close.

His presence was heat and tension, his amber eyes scanning her face like he was searching for any sign of weakness.

"You shouldn't have touched her," he growled, his gaze snapping toward the Elders.

But his hand brushed against hers.

Intentional.

Lingering.

Lyra felt it instantly—the bond reacting, pulsing between them.

Her breath caught.

And then—

Azriel moved.

He stepped in front of them both, slightly blocking Lyra from view. Not aggressively… but protectively. His golden eyes gleamed with something unreadable as he looked back at her over his shoulder.

"Stay behind us," he said quietly.

But there was something different in his tone now.

Not just authority.

Concern.

Real concern.

Lyra swallowed hard.

The tension between the three Alphas had shifted.

It wasn't just rivalry anymore.

It was something deeper.

Something… personal.

---

"Interesting," one of the Elders murmured, watching the interaction carefully. "Even now… the bond strengthens."

Kyle's jaw tightened. "We didn't come here to be observed like a spectacle."

"No," another Elder replied. "You came because you're afraid."

Silence.

Sharp.

Cutting.

Rowan scoffed. "Afraid? Of you?"

"Not us," the Elder said calmly.

A pause.

Then—

"Of her."

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Lyra felt her chest tighten again.

But this time—

Kyle's hand found hers again.

Rowan stepped closer.

Azriel didn't move away.

They didn't deny it.

They didn't step back.

If anything—

They stood closer.

As if her being dangerous only made them more certain.

---

"She's not something you can control," Azriel said suddenly, his voice calm but firm.

The Elders shifted slightly.

"And you can?" one of them challenged.

Azriel didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He turned his head slightly.

Just enough to look at Lyra.

His golden eyes softened, just for a second.

"No," he said quietly.

"But she doesn't need to be controlled."

Lyra's heart skipped.

---

The room grew tense again.

"You're making a mistake," an Elder warned.

"No," Kyle said, his voice turning colder. "The mistake would be letting you near her again."

Rowan smirked slightly. "We've already seen what happens when you try."

The torches flickered.

The air thickened.

And then—

Lyra felt it.

The bond.

Not wild this time.

Not out of control.

But steady.

Warm.

Connecting her to all three of them at once.

She looked at them.

Really looked.

Kyle—steady, protective, intense.

Rowan—fiery, stubborn, unpredictable.

Azriel—calm, observant, quietly dangerous.

Three completely different men.

Three enemies.

And yet…

They were standing together.

For her.

Because of her.

Lyra's chest tightened, something unfamiliar blooming deep inside her.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Something softer.

Stronger.

"…I'm not afraid of you," she said suddenly, her voice quiet but clear.

The Elders stilled.

"I don't know what I am yet," she continued, her fingers unconsciously tightening around Kyle's hand. "But I know one thing."

Her gaze flickered briefly to Rowan.

Then to Azriel.

And back.

"I'm not alone."

Silence followed.

Heavy.

But different now.

Because this time—

It wasn't filled with uncertainty.

It was filled with something far more dangerous.

Choice.

And for the first time—

The bond didn't feel like something forced onto her.

It felt like something she was beginning to accept.

Something she was beginning to want.

And that…

That changed everything.
