Chapter Twelve: Bridget
The morning sun painted the Watson mansion in shades of gold and amber. Jay woke slowly, wrapped in Keifer's arms, the familiar warmth of him grounding her in a way she still couldn't quite believe.
Two weeks. It had only been two weeks since she'd fainted on that sidewalk.
Two weeks since her entire life had turned upside down.
She smiled against his chest, pressing a soft kiss to his skin.
He stirred, arms tightening around her. "Morning."
"Morning."
"Stop smiling. I can feel it."
"Can't help it."
He opened one eye, looking down at her. "Happy?"
"Ridiculously."
"Good." He kissed her forehead. "Me too."
---
They made their way downstairs together, following the sounds of chaos that had become the mansion's new normal.
The kitchen was already in full swing.
C.N. had somehow claimed permanent coffee duty and was distributing mugs with military precision. Rakii documented everything, her camera never far from her hands. David was attempting to teach Keigan some complex game while Freya watched with amused affection. Mica was on Calix's back, both of them raiding the refrigerator like they owned the place.
Percy and Honey were in their own world, feeding each other breakfast with exaggerated romance. Aries and Ella sat quietly together, reading separate things but touching constantly—his hand on her knee, her shoulder against his.
Felix stood at the stove, helping the chef cook mountains of food. He was laughing at something David said, but Jay watched him carefully. That same shadow lurked behind his eyes. The one she'd noticed yesterday. The one that hadn't gone away.
Keiran spotted her first. "MAMMA!"
He launched himself from his chair, tiny legs pumping, and crashed into her legs with the force of a small hurricane.
She laughed, scooping him up. "Good morning, baby!"
"Morning, Mamma! I helped cook! I put the sprinkles on!"
"Sprinkles? For breakfast?"
"Special day!" He nodded seriously. "Pappa said special day! Sprinkles for special day!"
Jay looked at Keifer questioningly.
He shrugged, smiling. "Every day is special when you're three."
---
Breakfast was chaos, as always.
Plates piled high. Conversations overlapping. Laughter constant.
Jay found herself beside Felix halfway through the meal.
"Hey," she said softly.
"Hey yourself." He smiled at her—warm, genuine, but tired. "You're looking better. Head okay? Hand?"
"Healing. Thanks to everyone hovering."
"That's what we do. Hover. It's our love language."
She laughed. "I know." She paused. "Felix. You okay? Really?"
His smile flickered. "I'm fine, Jay."
"You're not. I know you. Something's off."
He was quiet for a moment. Then: "Just tired. Long night."
"Nightmares?"
He didn't answer. That was answer enough.
She reached over, squeezing his massive hand. "I'm here. We're all here. You know that, right?"
"I know." He squeezed back gently. "Thanks, little sister."
---
An idea sparked in Jay's mind.
A ridiculous, probably terrible, definitely chaotic idea.
But sometimes the best things came from chaos.
"Felix," she said slowly. "I want you to meet someone."
He raised an eyebrow. "Someone?"
"A friend. Another friend. One who's not here yet."
"Another friend? How many friends do you have?"
"Apparently not as many as I thought, since half of them were secretly Keifer's friends too." She grinned. "But this one's all mine. Well, mine and C.N.'s and David's. She's been part of our crew for years. She's just been... away."
"Away where?"
"Studying. Abroad. Working on some fancy degree. She's brilliant. Like, scary brilliant. And she's back in town. Just got back yesterday."
Felix looked confused. "Okay? Why are you telling me this?"
"Because I think you two should meet."
His eyes widened slightly. "Jay—"
"Just meet her. That's all I'm asking. Coffee. Conversation. Five minutes. If you hate it, you never have to see her again."
" I don't hate easily."
"Then it's perfect."
He studied her for a long moment. "You're matchmaking."
"Absolutely not."
"You absolutely are."
"I'm facilitating a meeting between two people I love. What they do with that meeting is up to them."
Felix laughed—a real laugh, warm and genuine. "You're impossible."
"Learned from the best." She nodded toward C.N. and David. "Them. They're terrible influences."
"Hey!" C.N. called from across the room. "I heard that!"
"You were meant to!"
---
The idea spread through the mansion like wildfire.
By mid-morning, everyone knew.
Jay's mysterious friend Bridget was coming. And she was potentially being set up with Felix.
Percy was beside himself with excitement.
"THIS IS AMAZING! A BLIND DATE! IN OUR MANSION! I NEED TO PREPARE!"
"Percy, it's not a blind date. It's just meeting."
"Same thing! Honey, we need to decorate!"
Honey patted his arm soothingly. "We don't need to decorate, babe."
"But—"
"No decorating."
Percy deflated. "Fine. But I'm observing. From a distance. For science."
"There's no science."
"There's ALWAYS science."
---
Aries pulled Jay aside. "You sure about this? Felix has been through a lot. He doesn't open up easily."
"I know. That's why I think Bridget might be perfect for him. She's patient. Kind. Sees past the surface." Jay looked at her brother. "I'm not forcing anything. Just... creating an opportunity. What happens after that is up to them."
Aries studied her for a moment, then nodded. "Okay. But if it goes badly—"
"It won't."
"How do you know?"
"Because I know them both. Trust me."
---
Bridget arrived at noon.
The doorbell rang, and suddenly everyone found excuses to be in the entrance hall.
Percy "just happened" to be passing by. Honey "needed something from that area." C.N. was "checking the mail." Rakii was "photographing the architecture." Even Keigan wandered down, curious about the commotion.
Jay opened the door.
Bridget stood there, smiling—petite, with sharp intelligent eyes and wild curls escaping from a messy bun. She carried a small bag and an aura of calm competence that immediately filled the space.
"JAY!"
"BRIDGET!"
They collided in a hug, both talking at once.
"You're back!"
"I'm back!"
"You look amazing!"
"You look hurt! Your head! Your hand! What happened?"
"Long story. I'll tell you inside. Come in, come in!"
---
Bridget stepped inside and froze.
The entrance hall was full of people. All staring at her.
She turned slowly to Jay. "You didn't mention there would be an audience."
"There's not an audience. They're just... here. Existing. In the same space."
Percy waved. "HI, BRIDGET! I'M PERCY! I'M THE HANDSOME ONE!"
Bridget blinked. "Okay?"
Honey smacked his arm. "Percy, stop."
"What? I'm being welcoming!"
Jay grabbed Bridget's hand and pulled her through the crowd. "Ignore them. They're feral. Come meet everyone properly."
---
Introductions were chaos.
C.N. hugged Bridget fiercely. "Missed you, genius girl."
"Missed you too, genius boy."
David practically climbed her. "BRIDGET! You're back! FINALLY!"
Freya hugged her warmly. "Welcome home."
Rakii took approximately fifty photos. "For documentation. You've been gone so long."
Mica inspected her critically. "You look smarter than before. Did studying make you smarter?"
"Hopefully?"
Calix shook her hand politely. "Nice to meet you. Mica talks about you constantly."
"All good things, I hope."
"Mostly."
Ella and Aries greeted her warmly. Honey hugged her like they'd known each other for years. Yuri filmed everything, occasionally narrating.
Keigan waved shyly. Keiran hid behind Jay's legs, then peeked out.
"Who's that?" Bridget asked softly.
"That's Keiran. He's three. He calls me Mamma."
Bridget's eyebrows shot up. "Mamma?"
"Long story. Very long. I'll explain later."
"And that?" Bridget nodded toward the kitchen doorway.
Felix stood there, half-hidden, watching the chaos with an amused smile. He hadn't inserted himself into the introductions, hanging back like he always did.
Jay's heart squeezed.
"That's Felix," she said softly. "My other best friend. The one I told you about."
Bridget's eyes lingered on him. "The gentle giant?"
"The very same."
"He's... not what I expected."
"What did you expect?"
"I don't know. Something different." Bridget tilted her head, studying him. "He looks sad."
"He's been through some stuff. Doesn't talk about it."
Bridget nodded slowly. Then, without warning, she walked toward him.
Jay held her breath.
---
Bridget stopped in front of Felix, looking up at him with those sharp, intelligent eyes.
"Hi. I'm Bridget."
He blinked, clearly caught off guard. "I... Felix."
"I know. Jay talks about you constantly. You're the one who taught her to fight, right?"
"Uh. Yeah. A long time ago."
"She's terrible at it, by the way. Absolutely no instincts."
Felix laughed—surprised, genuine. "She's not THAT bad."
"She threw a punch at me once. Missed by a mile. Hit a wall instead. Broke her hand."
"That was a different situation—"
"She told you about that?"
"She told all of us. We still tease her about it."
Bridget grinned. "Good. She deserves teasing."
Felix smiled down at her—real, warm, reaching his eyes. "You're different than I expected."
"Different how?"
"I don't know. Smaller? Smarter-sounding? Jay talks about you like you're some kind of genius."
"I am a genius. But I'm also just a person." She shrugged. "A person who's been traveling for eighteen hours and really wants coffee. Is there coffee?"
"In the kitchen. I'll show you."
He led her toward the kitchen, and Jay watched them go.
C.N. appeared beside her. "Well. That was fast."
"They're talking."
"They're definitely talking."
David joined them. "She's good at this. Putting people at ease."
"Always has been."
Rakii snapped a photo of them disappearing into the kitchen. "For the record. This is the beginning of something."
"Don't jinx it," Jay warned.
"I'm not jinxing. I'm documenting. There's a difference."
---
The kitchen, usually chaos central, had gone strangely quiet when Bridget and Felix entered.
The chef, used to madness, simply nodded and pointed toward the coffee maker. Felix handled the rest—pouring, adding sugar the way he'd noticed she liked it, handing it over without asking.
Bridget raised an eyebrow. "How did you know how I take my coffee?"
"Jay mentioned it. Years ago. She said you were particular."
"She remembers that?"
"She remembers everything about people she loves."
Bridget was quiet for a moment, sipping her coffee. "She's lucky. To have friends like you."
"WE'RE lucky to have her." Felix leaned against the counter. "She's the heart of our group. Keeps us together."
"You're not from here originally, right? Jay mentioned something about—" She stopped. "Sorry. That's probably too personal."
"It's fine. I'm from up north. Small town. Came to the city for work, stayed for the people." He shrugged. "Found family here."
"Found family is the best kind." Bridget looked around the kitchen, at the chaos leaking in from other rooms. "This is... a lot."
"It's always like this. Since Jay arrived, anyway. Before her, this house was quiet. Too quiet." Felix smiled. "She fixed that."
"She fixes a lot of things. Doesn't always realize it."
They stood in comfortable silence, drinking coffee, watching the madness through the doorway.
Then Bridget spoke again. "Jay told me you've been through some hard times."
Felix tensed slightly. "She—"
"Not details. Just that you've been hurting. And that she's worried." Bridget met his eyes. "I'm not going to pry. But if you ever need someone to talk to—someone not connected to all this chaos—I'm a good listener."
He stared at her. "You just met me."
"I know. But Jay trusts you. That's enough for me." She smiled—open, honest, kind. "Also, you made me coffee exactly right. That counts for something."
Felix laughed. Actually laughed.
Bridget's smile widened.
---
By mid-afternoon, something had shifted.
Bridget had been absorbed into the chaos like she'd always been there. She played with Keiran, who adored her immediately. She talked philosophy with C.N., who actually met his match for once. She discussed photography with Rakii. She even survived Percy's dramatic retelling of his love story with Honey.
But she kept gravitating back toward Felix.
They sat together on the patio, overlooking the gardens. Talking. Laughing. Comfortable.
Jay watched from inside, heart swelling.
Keifer appeared beside her. "You did good."
"I didn't do anything. They just... clicked."
"That's the best kind of matchmaking. When it doesn't look like matchmaking at all."
She leaned into him. "You think it'll work?"
"I think they're both good people who deserve happiness. Whether it's together or apart, they'll figure it out." He kissed her temple. "But yeah. I think it might work."
---
Dinner was even more chaotic than usual.
Bridget fit in like she'd always been there. She traded stories with C.N. and David about their shared past. She made Freya laugh—actually laugh out loud, which was rare. She challenged Mica to a trivia contest and won (barely). She let Keiran feed her grapes, which earned her his undying loyalty.
And she sat beside Felix.
Not obviously. Not intentionally. Just... there. Close. Comfortable.
He was different around her. Softer. Less guarded. The shadows in his eyes seemed lighter.
Percy noticed, of course. "Dude. You're smiling. Like, actually smiling. Not your usual thing."
Felix shrugged. "I smile."
"Not like that. That's a REAL smile. With teeth and everything."
"Percy—"
"It's BRIDGET! She's making you smile! This is HUGE!"
Bridget laughed, unbothered. "I have that effect on people."
"Apparently!"
---
After dinner, the chaos spread through the mansion like usual.
Game room. Living room. Pool. Library. Every corner filled with laughter and noise.
Jay found Felix alone on the balcony again.
But this time, he wasn't alone for long.
Bridget appeared beside him, two mugs in hand. "Hot chocolate. The chef made it. Apparently it's Keiran's favorite, so they keep it stocked."
Felix took it, surprised. "Thanks."
They stood together, looking out at the city lights.
"Overwhelming, isn't it?" Bridget said quietly. "All of them. All the time."
"Sometimes. But in a good way."
"I know what you mean. My family's like that. Loud. Chaotic. Always there." She sipped her hot chocolate. "It's why I left, actually. Needed quiet to think. To figure things out."
"Did you?"
"Figure things out? Some. Not all." She glanced at him. "Still working on it."
"Me too."
They were quiet for a long moment.
Then Bridget spoke again. "Jay told me you're single."
Felix choked on his hot chocolate. "She WHAT?"
"Relax. It wasn't a setup. She just mentioned it. In passing." Bridget smiled. "I'm single too. By choice. Been focusing on school, work, life."
"And now?"
"And now I'm back. And everything's different." She looked at him. "I'm not saying I'm looking for something. But I'm also not NOT looking, if that makes sense."
Felix stared at her. "You're very direct."
"Always have been. Jay says it's my best and worst quality."
"It's... refreshing."
"Good. I'd hate to be boring."
They laughed together—easy, natural, right.
Inside, Jay watched through the window, tears in her eyes.
Keifer wrapped his arms around her from behind. "Happy tears?"
"The best kind."
---
Later, much later, the mansion finally settled.
Couples dispersed to their various rooms. C.N. and Rakii. David and Freya. Percy and Honey. Aries and Ella. Mica and Calix.
Keigan disappeared to his room with a quiet goodnight. Keiran had fallen asleep on Jay's lap hours ago.
Felix walked Bridget to the guest room she'd claimed.
"Thanks for today," he said quietly. "For... talking. Listening. Being you."
"Thanks for being you." She smiled up at him. "It was nice. Meeting someone real. In the middle of all this chaos."
"Chaos seems to follow Jay."
"Chaos seems to find people who need it." She opened her door, then paused. "Felix?"
"Yeah?"
"I'd like to see you again. Not as a setup. Just... as friends. Getting to know each other. If you want."
He smiled—that real smile, warm and open. "I'd like that."
"Good. Tomorrow. Coffee. Just us." She grinned. "I'll even let you make it."
Then she disappeared inside, leaving him standing in the hallway with a smile he couldn't seem to shake.
---
Jay found him there a few minutes later, on her way to Keifer's room.
"Felix? You okay?"
He turned, and his face said everything.
"Jay." His voice was rough. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"For introducing us. For seeing something I didn't see. For—" He shook his head. "Just... thank you."
She hugged him—fierce and tight. "You deserve happiness. Both of you. Whatever happens, I'm glad you met."
He hugged her back carefully, mindful of her injuries. "Me too."
---
In Keifer's room, Jay crawled into bed beside him.
"Good day?" he murmured, pulling her close.
"The best." She nestled against his chest. "Felix is happy. Bridget's happy. Everyone's happy."
"Everyone except us?"
"Us are the happiest."
He kissed her forehead. "Damn right."
She laughed softly. "I love you."
"I love you too. Now sleep. Tomorrow's probably going to be chaos again."
"Probably." She smiled in the dark. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
---
Morning
Jay woke to sunlight and the sound of laughter.
She found Felix and Bridget in the kitchen, making breakfast together. Not touching. Not obvious. Just... comfortable. Happy.
Bridget was teaching him some complicated recipe. He was messing it up on purpose, making her laugh.
Jay watched from the doorway, heart full.
C.N. appeared beside her. "Well. That happened fast."
"They're just friends."
"For now."
"You're already planning their wedding, aren't you?"
"Absolutely. I've got color schemes and everything."
She laughed, leaning into him. "You're terrible."
"Terribly romantic, you mean."
Keifer appeared on her other side, wrapping an arm around her waist. "What'd I miss?"
"Felix and Bridget being cute."
"Already?"
"Apparently."
He smiled, kissing her temple. "Told you. You did good."
"I didn't do anything."
"You introduced them. That's everything."
She looked at Felix and Bridget, laughing together in the kitchen. At her family scattered through the mansion. At the man beside her. At the life she'd never expected.
"Look at us," she whispered.
Keifer held her close. "Yeah. Look at us."
