Chapter 43 - Krishna

Chapter Forty-One: In the Footsteps of Krishna

The morning in Jaipur dawned soft and golden.

Jay woke to find Keiran already awake, sitting by the window with Rex, watching the city come to life.

"Morning, baby."

"Morning, Mamma. Rex and me watching birds."

"Any interesting birds?"

"Brown ones. And one blue. Rex likes blue."

"Rex has excellent taste."

Keifer emerged from the bathroom, already dressed. "Ready for another adventure?"

"Where we going today, Pappa?"

"Somewhere very special. We're going to see where a god grew up."

Keiran's eyes widened. "God? Like temple god?"

"Exactly like that. Lord Krishna."

"Rex wants meet Krishna."

"Rex might get his wish."

---

The lobby was quieter than usual.

Percy stood by the door, actually calm. Honey held his hand, equally serene.

C.N. had his phone out, but he wasn't researching aggressively. Just reading.

Even Mica was subdued, leaning against Calix.

Jay raised an eyebrow at Aries. "What's happening?"

"Vrindavan. Mathura. These places are... different. Everyone feels it."

She did feel it. Something in the air. Something sacred.

---

The drive to Vrindavan was long but beautiful.

Flat plains gave way to greener landscapes. Temples appeared at every turn. The energy shifted—softer, somehow. More devotional.

Keiran pressed to the window. "Mamma, so many temples!"

"Lots of temples here, baby. This is a very holy place."

"Krishna lives here?"

"He lived here, yes. A long time ago."

"Rex excited."

"Rex should be excited."

Percy, in the seat ahead, was actually quiet. Just watching.

Honey caught Jay's eye and mouthed, "Is he okay?"

Jay shrugged. "Processing?"

"Must be serious."

---

They arrived at Prem Mandir—the Temple of Divine Love.

White marble rose before them, covered in intricate carvings depicting scenes from Krishna's life. The detail was overwhelming—every panel told a story, every corner held meaning.

Percy finally spoke. "Whoa."

"Yeah," C.N. agreed. "Whoa."

They walked through the gates, removing shoes, feeling the cool marble under their feet.

The main temple soared above them, but the real magic was in the details. Scenes of Krishna's childhood—stealing butter, playing with the gopis, lifting Govardhan Hill—carved in exquisite detail.

Keiran pointed at one. "Mamma! Baby god stealing food!"

"That's Krishna stealing butter, baby. He loved butter."

"Rex loves butter too!"

"Rex and Krishna have things in common."

---

They moved through the temple slowly, each absorbed in their own way.

Percy stopped at a carving of Krishna dancing. "He looks so happy."

"He was," C.N. said quietly. "In the stories, he was always happy. Always playing. Always loving."

"I want that."

Honey squeezed his hand. "You have that, babe. You have love."

"I know. But... I want to be like that. Always happy. Always loving."

"Work in progress?"

"Always."

---

Felix and Bridget found a quiet corner with a carving of Radha and Krishna.

"They look so peaceful," Bridget whispered.

"They were the ultimate love story," Felix said. "In Hindu mythology, Radha and Krishna represent the soul's longing for the divine."

Bridget looked at him. "How do you know that?"

"I read. Last night. Wanted to understand."

She smiled softly. "You're sweet."

"Just interested."

"Interested is sweet."

---

The gardens outside Prem Mandir were equally beautiful.

Fountains, flowers, more carvings. Keiran ran ahead, Rex held high, chasing butterflies.

"Mamma! Pappa! Butterflies!"

"Slow down, baby!"

"CAN'T! BUTTERFLIES FAST!"

Percy chased after him. "I'LL HELP! TOGETHER WE CATCH BUTTERFLY!"

"TITO PERCY! RUN FASTER!"

"I'M TRYING!"

Honey watched them, laughing. "Two toddlers."

"Accurate," Jay agreed.

Keifer wrapped an arm around her. "Happy?"

"Ridiculously."

"Good."

---

After Vrindavan, they drove to Gokul.

Smaller, quieter, but no less sacred. This was where Krishna spent his early childhood, hidden from the demon king Kamsa who sought to kill him.

They visited a small temple on the banks of the Yamuna.

The river was quieter here, more peaceful. Devotees performed aarti, small lamps floating on the water.

C.N. explained quietly. "This is where Krishna grew up. With his foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda."

Percy listened, actually listened. "So he had two sets of parents? Like... like adoption?"

"Sort of. His birth parents placed him here for safety."

Percy looked at Keifer. At Keiran. Something shifted in his expression.

"That's... that's beautiful."

"Yeah." Keifer's voice was soft. "It is."

---

Keiran tugged Jay's hand. "Mamma, Krishna had two mamma?"

"Two people who loved him as a mother, yes."

"Like me? I have you AND first mamma?"

Jay's heart clenched. "Yes, baby. Just like you."

"Krishna like me?"

"In many ways, yes. Loved. Protected. Cared for."

Keiran nodded solemnly. "Rex says that's good."

"Rex is right."

---

They ate lunch at a small dhaba by the river.

Simple food—dal, roti, sabzi—but somehow the best they'd ever tasted.

Percy was quiet through most of it, but it was a peaceful quiet. A thinking quiet.

Honey didn't push. Just sat with him.

C.N. didn't argue once.

Mica shared her food with a stray dog. Calix watched with a soft smile.

Felix fed Bridget a bite of roti. She blushed.

Yuri took photos, but gently. Documenting, not intruding.

---

After lunch, they drove to Mathura.

The birthplace of Krishna.

The temple complex was massive, bustling with pilgrims from all over India. The energy was different here—joyful, celebratory, alive.

They entered the Keshav Deva temple, built on the site of Krishna's birth.

The sanctum was small but powerful. Devotees crowded around, offering prayers, singing bhajans.

Keiran clung to Jay's hand. "Mamma, this is where god born?"

"Right here, baby. A long time ago."

"Rex says thank you for letting us come."

Jay's eyes filled with tears. "Tell Rex he's welcome."

---

They found a quiet spot in the complex, away from the crowds.

Percy sat on a low wall, staring at nothing.

Honey sat beside him. "You okay?"

"Yeah. Just... thinking."

"About what?"

"About how big the world is. How many people believe. How many stories. And how small I am." He looked at her. "But also how lucky. To be here. With you. With all of them."

She kissed his cheek. "That's pretty profound for Percy."

"Don't tell anyone. Ruins my image."

"Your secret's safe."

---

C.N. found Jay near a small shrine.

"Baby girl."

"Genius boy."

"Today was... different."

"Good different?"

"The best different." He paused. "I don't believe in much. You know that. Science. Facts. Evidence."

"I know."

"But today... I felt something. I can't explain it."

"You don't have to."

He nodded slowly. "Thanks for making us come."

"Thank you for being here."

---

The sun began to set as they left Mathura.

Gold and pink and purple, painting the sky over the sacred city.

Keiran fell asleep in the car, Rex clutched tightly.

Percy leaned against Honey, also half-asleep.

C.N. stared out the window, thinking.

Felix and Bridget held hands.

Mica was quiet for once.

Aries pulled Ella close.

Yuri had his camera down.

And Jay leaned against Keifer, watching the colors fade.

"Today was perfect," she whispered.

"The most perfect."

"Thank you for bringing us here."

"Thank you for being here." He kissed her hair. "With me. Always."

"Always."

---

Back at the hotel, they gathered one last time before bed.

No one wanted the day to end.

Percy broke the silence. "So... tomorrow?"

"Back to Delhi," Aries said. "Then home."

"Oh." Percy looked around. "I'm not ready."

"Me neither," C.N. admitted.

Mica nodded. "This trip was... I don't have words."

"Best trip ever?" David offered.

"More than that."

They all felt it.

Something had shifted. Something had grown. They'd started as a chaotic group of individuals. They were ending as something else.

Family.

---

Jay tucked Keiran in, Rex beside him.

"Night, baby."

"Night, Mamma." His eyes were already closing. "Tell Krishna thank you for today."

"I will, baby."

"And tell him Rex says hi."

"I'll tell him."

She kissed his forehead.

And the night was peaceful.
