Chapter Forty-Two: The Journey to Kedarnath
The morning they left for Kedarnath, the energy was different.
Not the chaotic excitement of the first days. Not the peaceful reverence of the temples. Something else—anticipation mixed with awareness that this would be different from anywhere else they'd been.
Jay felt it as she packed. "Keif?"
"Yeah?"
"This place. Kedarnath. It's high in the mountains, right?"
"Very high. One of the holiest sites in Hinduism. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas."
"Will Keiran be okay with the altitude?"
"We'll take it slow. Listen to his body. Turn back if needed." He pulled her close. "We're not here to prove anything. Just to be."
She nodded against his chest. "Just to be."
---
Keiran was already awake, bouncing on the bed. "MAMMA! PAPPA! MOUNTAINS AGAIN? LIKE KASHMIR?"
"Different mountains, baby. Higher mountains. Very special."
"Rex ready! Rex has snow boots!"
Indeed, Rex now sported tiny felt boots that Honey had made. They were adorable.
"Rex looks very prepared."
"Rex ALWAYS prepared."
---
The flight to Dehradun was short.
Then began the long drive to Gaurikund—the last point accessible by road. The mountains rose around them, bigger than Kashmir, wilder than Manali.
Percy was quiet for once. Just watching.
Honey held his hand. "You okay?"
"Yeah. Just... taking it in."
C.N. was similarly subdued. No research. No arguments. Just watching.
Mica leaned against Calix. "It's so big."
"The Himalayas," Calix said softly. "Biggest mountains in the world."
"We're really here."
"We're really here."
---
They reached Gaurikund in the late afternoon.
The trek to Kedarnath would begin tomorrow—a 16-kilometer journey through some of the most breathtaking terrain on earth.
Not everyone would make the full trek.
Aries and Ella had arranged porters for those who needed help. Felix, built like a tank, was determined to walk the whole way. Percy... well, Percy was Percy.
"I CAN DO THIS! I'M STRONG! I'M READY!"
"Percy, you've been sitting in a car for six hours."
"DETAILS!"
Honey patted his arm. "We'll see how far we get."
"WE'LL GET ALL THE WAY! TO THE TEMPLE! TO THE GOD!"
Keiran tugged Jay's sleeve. "Mamma, can Rex walk?"
"Rex can ride with you, baby. In the carrier."
"Rex happy."
---
They stayed overnight in Gaurikund, in simple but clean accommodations.
The air was thinner here. Cooler. The sound of the Mandakini River filled the night.
Jay lay awake, Keifer beside her, Keiran asleep between them.
"Thinking?" he murmured.
"Just... feeling. This place. It's different."
"The mountains have that effect."
"I'm glad we're here. All of us."
"Me too." He kissed her forehead. "Now sleep. Big day tomorrow."
---
The trek began at dawn.
Porters carried the heavier bags. Everyone wore layers, good shoes, determined expressions.
Percy started strong. "I'M LEADING THE WAY! FOLLOW ME!"
He made it approximately five hundred meters before needing to stop.
"OKAY, PAUSE. BRIEF PAUSE. CATCHING BREATH."
Honey patted his back. "The altitude, babe. It's hard."
"ALTITUDE IS MY ENEMY!"
C.N., annoyingly, was fine. "The key is steady pace. Not too fast."
"I HATE THAT YOU'RE RIGHT!"
"I'm always right."
"NOT HELPFUL!"
---
The trail wound upward through pine forests, past waterfalls, alongside the roaring Mandakini.
Keiran rode in a carrier on Keifer's back, Rex tucked in beside him. "Pappa! Look! WATERFALL!"
"Beautiful, buddy."
"Rex wants swim!"
"Rex might find the water cold."
"Rex brave!"
---
Felix set a steady pace, Bridget beside him. David bounced ahead, then back, then ahead again. Freya followed calmly.
Mica complained approximately every twenty minutes. Calix encouraged her. They were a team.
Yuri filmed everything, but carefully, not slowing the group.
Rakii photographed constantly, capturing the light, the mountains, the expressions.
Aries and Ella walked together, quiet and steady.
And Percy... Percy struggled.
But he kept going.
---
Two hours in, he sat on a rock, gasping.
"I can't. I literally can't. My legs are dead."
Honey sat beside him. "Then we rest. No shame in resting."
"But the temple—"
"Will be there. We'll get there when we get there."
C.N. stopped too. "She's right. This isn't a race."
Percy looked at him. "You're not making fun of me?"
"Why would I? This is hard. Altitude doesn't care about ego."
Percy stared. Then, slowly, smiled. "Thanks, C.N."
"Don't get used to it."
"Wouldn't dream of it."
---
They made it to Kedarnath in the late afternoon.
The town was small, simple, nestled in a valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks. And there, at the end, stood the temple.
Ancient stone. Black against the white mountains. Timeless.
Everyone stopped.
Even Percy.
"Oh," he breathed. "Oh, wow."
C.N. nodded slowly. "Yeah. Wow."
Keiran pointed. "Mamma! God house!"
"God house, baby."
"Rex says it's beautiful."
"Rex is right."
---
They checked into their guesthouse—basic but warm—and immediately went to the temple.
The queue was long but moved steadily. Pilgrims from all over India, all over the world, waiting to glimpse the Jyotirlinga.
Keiran held Jay's hand tightly. "Mamma, so many people."
"All here for the same reason, baby. To pray. To feel close to God."
"Rex feels close already."
"Rex is special."
---
Inside the temple, the atmosphere was electric.
Devotees chanted. Bells rang. The air was thick with incense and devotion. And there, in the inner sanctum, the Jyotirlinga—a manifestation of Shiva, ancient and powerful.
Jay felt tears come. Couldn't stop them.
Keifer pulled her close. "I know."
"It's just... so much. So powerful."
"Yeah." He kissed her hair. "I feel it too."
Keiran, on Keifer's hip, stared at the shrine. "Mamma, that's Shiva?"
"That's a form of Shiva, baby. A very holy form."
"Rex says thank you for letting us come."
"Rex is very polite."
---
They moved through the temple slowly, each in their own space.
Percy stood before the shrine, eyes closed, hands folded. Honey watched him with soft eyes.
C.N. was unusually still, just... present.
Felix and Bridget stood together, not touching, but connected.
David held Freya's hand tightly.
Mica was quiet, leaning on Calix.
Aries and Ella, as always, were solid.
Yuri had his camera down. Just watching.
Rakii took one photo—the group, silhouetted against the inner sanctum—then put her camera away.
---
After the temple, they sat by the Mandakini River.
The water was icy, fed by glaciers. The sound was soothing, constant, eternal.
Percy broke the silence. "I don't know what I expected. But it wasn't this."
"Peace?" C.N. offered.
"More than peace. Something... bigger."
"That's the mountains. That's the faith of millions."
"Yeah." Percy looked around. "I'm glad we came."
"Me too," C.N. admitted.
Mica leaned against Calix. "Me three."
David raised a hand. "Me four."
"Okay, we don't need to count," Freya laughed.
"COUNTING IS FUN!"
---
Dinner was simple—dal, rice, vegetables—but somehow the best meal of the trip.
Everyone was tired, quiet, content.
Keiran fell asleep in Jay's lap halfway through.
Percy watched him. "He's so peaceful."
"He's exhausted."
"No, I mean... always. He's always peaceful. Even when he's chaos, there's peace underneath."
Jay looked at her son. "He's had that since birth. Even through everything."
"Because you and Keifer gave it to him."
She blinked. "Percy."
"I'm serious. You two... you made a home. A real home. For him, for Keigan, for all of us." He shrugged. "Just... thanks."
Jay reached across, squeezed his hand. "Thanks for being part of it."
He grinned. "I'm the best part."
"There it is."
"Had to bring it back."
---
That night, Jay and Keifer stood outside their guesthouse, looking at the stars.
Millions of them. More than she'd ever seen. The mountains loomed dark around them, silent and eternal.
"I don't want to leave," she whispered.
"We don't have to. Not yet."
"Eventually."
"Eventually. But not tonight." He pulled her close. "Tonight, we're here. Together."
She leaned into him. "Together."
---
Keiran's voice from inside. "Mamma? Pappa?"
They went in.
He was half-asleep, reaching for them. "Love you."
"Love you too, baby."
"Love you, buddy."
He smiled, already asleep again.
Jay looked at Keifer over his head.
"Best decision I ever made," she whispered.
"What?"
"Fainting on that sidewalk."
He laughed softly. "Best catch I ever made."
She kissed him. "Best everything."
