Chapter 45 - Rani lakshmi bhai

Chapter Forty-Three: The Fort of Jhansi

They descended from the mountains with heavy hearts and lighter lungs.

The air grew thicker, warmer, more familiar. But something of Kedarnath stayed with them—a quietness, a stillness, a sense of having touched something eternal.

Percy was uncharacteristically subdued. "I miss the mountains already."

Honey squeezed his hand. "They'll still be there. We can come back."

"Someday," C.N. agreed. "When we're ready."

Keiran, recovered from the altitude, was bouncing again. "Where now, Mamma? More mountains?"

"No, baby. A fort. A very special fort."

"Fort like Rajasthan?"

"Different kind of fort. This one has a story. About a brave queen."

Keiran's eyes widened. "Queen? Like girl king?"

"Exactly like a girl king. Her name was Rani Lakshmibai."

"Rex wants meet queen!"

"Rex might be a few centuries too late, but we can visit her fort."

---

The train to Jhansi was an adventure in itself.

Percy had never been on an Indian train. This was a problem.

"THERE'S SO MANY PEOPLE! SO MUCH COLOR! SO MUCH—" He stopped as a chai wallah passed. "CHAI! I NEED CHAI!"

"Percy, we just ate."

"CHAI IS NOT FOOD! CHAI IS LIFE!"

C.N. rolled his eyes but bought chai for everyone. Even he had to admit—train chai hit different.

Keiran loved it. "Mamma! Hot milk! Spicy!"

"Masala chai, baby."

"Rex wants!"

"Rex can have a tiny sip."

Rex, being a stuffed dinosaur, did not actually drink. But Keiran pretended, and that was enough.

---

They arrived in Jhansi in the afternoon.

The fort rose on a rocky hill, dominating the skyline. Massive walls, ancient gates, and the weight of history pressing down.

Percy was pressed to the window of their taxi. "THAT'S THE FORT? IT'S HUGE!"

"That's the fort."

"I'M GOING TO CLIMB EVERY WALL!"

"Percy, no."

"PERCY YES!"

Honey grabbed his arm. "Babe, we just got here. Calm down."

"I CAN'T CALM DOWN! HISTORY IS EXCITING!"

---

They entered through the main gate—the famous gate where Rani Lakshmibai's forces had fought so bravely.

A guide met them, an elderly man with kind eyes and a wealth of stories.

"Welcome to Jhansi Fort," he said. "Here, the ground itself remembers bravery."

Keiran looked at Jay. "Mamma, ground remembers?"

"The stories say so, baby. The people who fought here, their courage is still here."

"Rex feels it."

"Rex has good instincts."

---

They walked through the fort slowly.

The guide pointed out where the Rani had reviewed her troops. Where she had planned her strategies. Where she had made her last stand.

Percy listened, actually listened, for once not interrupting.

C.N. took mental notes, but quietly.

Mica held Calix's hand, unusually still.

Felix and Bridget walked close, absorbing.

Even Yuri was quiet, camera down.

---

They reached the top of the fort, overlooking the city below.

The wind was strong, carrying the sounds of modern Jhansi—traffic, vendors, life. But up here, history lingered.

The guide pointed to a distant hill. "There. That's where the Rani escaped on horseback. Jumped from the fort walls with her son tied to her back. Fought her way through the enemy."

Percy's jaw dropped. "She jumped? WITH A KID?"

"With her son, yes. A child about this age." He nodded toward Keiran.

Keiran looked at Jay. "Mamma, queen jumped?"

"A very brave queen, baby."

"Rex says she's amazing."

"Rex is right."

---

They found a quiet corner near the Rani's palace within the fort.

Jay sat on a low wall, looking out at the city. Keifer sat beside her.

"She was only twenty-nine when she died," Jay said quietly. "So young."

"Lived more in those years than most people live in a lifetime."

"She loved her son. You can feel it in the stories. Everything she did, for him."

Keifer looked at Keiran, running in circles with Rex. "I get that."

"Yeah." She leaned into him. "You do."

---

Percy found them there. For once, he wasn't bouncing.

"Hey."

"Hey."

"This place is... heavy."

"In a good way?"

"In a real way." He sat on the wall beside them. "She was amazing. The Rani. I didn't know about her before today."

"Now you do."

"Now I do." He was quiet for a moment. "I'm glad we came. To all these places. They're making me think."

"About what?"

"About what matters. About what I want to leave behind. About..." He shrugged. "Being braver, maybe."

Jay squeezed his hand. "You're braver than you think."

"I hide it well."

"You do."

He grinned, the usual Percy returning. "I'm also VERY handsome."

"There it is."

"Can't let the profundity last too long. Bad for my brand."

---

They gathered near the main gate before leaving.

The guide had one more story. "Before the final battle, the Rani tied her son to her back and said, 'If I die, you will live. If I fall, you will rise.' She fought like a lioness. And though she fell, her son lived. Her legacy lived."

Keiran tugged Jay's sleeve. "Mamma, if you were queen, would you tie me to back and fight?"

Jay knelt beside him. "Baby, I would do anything to protect you. Anything. But I hope we never have to find out."

"Rex would help. Rex would fight too."

"I know, baby. Rex is very brave."

---

They left the fort as the sun began to set.

The stones glowed golden, warm and ancient.

Percy looked back one last time. "Goodbye, brave queen. Thanks for the inspiration."

C.N. stood beside him. "Never thought I'd hear you talk like that."

"Never thought I'd feel like this." He looked at C.N. "Travel changes you, huh?"

"Guess so."

"Even geniuses?"

"Especially geniuses." C.N. almost smiled. "We need it most. Too much in our heads."

Percy nodded. "Yeah." Pause. "We're friends, right? Like, actually friends?"

C.N. considered. "Yeah. I think we are."

"Good. Because you're annoying but you're also kind of great."

"That's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."

"Don't get used to it."

"Wouldn't dream of it."

---

The train back to Delhi was quieter.

Everyone tired, but a good tired. The kind that comes from experiencing something real.

Keiran fell asleep on Jay's lap, Rex clutched tightly.

Percy leaned against Honey, also asleep.

C.N. stared out the window, thinking.

Felix and Bridget shared earbuds, listening to something soft.

Mica was curled against Calix, peaceful.

David snored lightly, head on Freya's shoulder.

Yuri didn't film. Just watched the landscape pass.

Aries and Ella held hands, not speaking.

And Jay looked at Keifer. "One more place?"

"One more. Then home."

"Then home."

He kissed her forehead. "Best trip ever."

"Best everything."
