After the kiss, things between Ethan and Lila became really awkward. She refused to look at him. Deep down, she was thrilled, but at the same time, scared. Scared that it might all be a one-time thing. Scared that maybe, just maybe, this was a big deal for her—but Ethan didn't feel the same.
Lost in those thoughts, Lila suddenly stood up. "Can you take me home?" she asked, her voice tight. Without waiting for an answer, she walked to the car abruptly, leaving Ethan standing there, confused.
"Wait for me!" he yelled, running after her.
He tried to start a conversation as she got in the car, but she remained silent, refusing to meet his eyes. He didn't know how to handle her sudden change in mood. After a few moments, he sighed and decided to let her be. He turned up the music, hoping it would drown out the tension between them.
On the drive to her house, Lila stayed quiet, staring out the window, her thoughts still spinning. Why did I do that? she wondered. What if it meant more to me than it did to him? She could feel her stomach twisting with nervous excitement and fear at the same time.
When they arrived, she got out quickly and started walking toward the door, but Ethan called her back. She froze without turning around.
"I'm sorry, Lila," he said quickly. "I saw that you weren't in a good mood after the kiss. I'm sorry if I did anything wrong. I… I should have—" He faltered, unsure how to finish.
Lila felt her chest tighten. She was sad, confused, and overwhelmed, but all she could manage was, "It's fine," before disappearing inside.
Her mom and brother noticed immediately. Her mom's eyes went to the dress she was wearing. "What happened at school?" she asked.
"I'm tired," Lila said softly. "I'll explain later."
Upstairs, Lila collapsed onto her bed. Why did I do that? she thought, her mind racing. She checked her phone and saw missed calls from Cassandra. She quickly typed, "I'll tell you everything that happened tomorrow," and set the phone aside.
Torn between excitement and fear, she stared at the ceiling. Was she really overreacting? She wanted to call Ethan, but her thumb hovered over his number, too scared to actually dial. Eventually, exhaustion and confusion took over, and she cried herself to sleep.
Meanwhile, Ethan got home in a foul mood. His parents noticed immediately.
"What's wrong, son?" his dad asked.
"Maybe someone pissed him off at school," his mom suggested, following him upstairs.
He ignored them and went straight to the bathroom. The water was freezing, but he didn't mind. His thoughts were too scattered. Maybe she didn't like the kiss. Maybe she didn't even like him. He stepped out quickly, grabbed his phone, and stared at a picture they had taken earlier. "She's so beautiful," he muttered. "Why is she upset with me?"
At school the next day, Cassandra finally broke the silence. "What? You guys kissed?!" she yelled, attracting stares from everyone around.
"Stop, Cassie!" Lila whispered, hiding her face in embarrassment.
"But why were you upset with him?" Cassandra pressed.
"I don't know," Lila admitted. "I was scared."
"Scared of what?"
"Maybe he's just using me…" Lila murmured.
"No! You know he's not like that…" Cassandra started, but chaos erupted. Ethan was there. Lila felt herself grow uncomfortable and grabbed Cassandra's hand, dragging her out of the classroom. Ethan noticed, and it pained him.
One week later...
A whole week had passed, and Ethan and Lila hadn't exchanged a single word. Every time their paths crossed in the halls or at the cafeteria, it was like they'd become invisible to each other. The air around them seemed to tangle into something thick and awkward, making even the simplest glance feel like a dare.
His friends started noticing. "Yo, what's up with you and Lila? You guys acting…weird," Marcus nudged him, eyebrow raised. Ethan just shrugged, forcing a laugh that didn't reach his eyes.
Victoria, ever the schemer, wasn't blind either. She hovered in the background, her plans weaving quietly, her smirk like a little storm waiting to break. Nothing seemed to shake her, not even the tension radiating from Ethan and Lila's silent war.
Each encounter made the silence heavier. Ethan found himself overthinking every small interaction, every glance Lila didn't give him, and it was exhausting. Little did he know, the next moment was about to throw all that tension into chaos…
Lila was alone in the school garden, the soft rustle of leaves around her. Cassandra was at her dance class, leaving Lila to her own thoughts. She found herself lost in memories of Ethan, replaying their brief moments together, a small smile tugging at her lips.
A girl approached, unfamiliar to Lila.
"Hey, are you Lila?" she asked.
"Yes," Lila replied, curiosity flickering in her eyes.
"Uhm… Cassandra asked me to give you this," the girl said, holding out a small package.
"Oh! Okay, thanks," Lila said, smiling. She opened it carefully and found her favorite drink inside. Her eyes lit up, and she took a large, satisfying gulp.
Then she noticed a folded note tucked in the package. Frowning, she realized the handwriting wasn't Cassandra's.
Before she could think further, a sharp, searing pain shot through her chest. Her breath caught, and she clutched herself, gasping. Panic flared as the pain refused to ease. Weak and dizzy, she struggled toward the hall, hoping someone would notice. Tears blurred her vision, each step heavier than the last.
Students in the hall began to shout, calling for an ambulance, some even recording the scene on their phones. But no one moved to help her directly.
Within seconds, her legs gave out, the world tilting violently. Darkness swallowed everything around her.
