Ch93 Shen Que, Welcome Our New Companion
"Shen Que, did you meet anyone you liked when you were in the army?" Meng Ci asked directly.
If Shen Que really had some "white moonlight" or first love, Meng Ci vowed he'd kick him to the curb without hesitation.
What if, like in some novels, Shen Que saw him as a substitute?
Before his transmigration, Meng Ci hadn't read many novels.
But after the apocalypse struck, with more free time on his hands, his boss had downloaded tons of novels onto his phone.
Whenever he had free time, Meng Ci would read them.
And many of the novels on the bestseller lists were all about domineering CEOs and tortured love stories, which is precisely why Meng Ci had been so corrupted.
Shen Que heard this and his gaze toward Meng Ci turned strangely cold.
"Our training schedule back then was brutal, and we were all sunburned and tanned. Of course, we didn't find each other attractive."
"Besides, before meeting you, I didn't even know if I liked men or women."
Meng Ci was quite satisfied with the first part of that statement, but the latter part didn't sit well with him.
Not knowing whether he liked men or women-wasn't Shen Que bisexual? If so, wouldn't his chances of cheating double?
"So does that mean your chances of cheating will increase?"
Upon learning Meng Ci's thoughts through Shen Que's questioning, Shen Que found himself rather speechless.
"Have you ever heard the saying? Until you truly meet someone you love, you don't know whether you're attracted to men or women."
"I love you simply because of who you are, not because of your gender."
"Besides, even if I did like you, I'd still like you if you were a dog."
Meng Ci was satisfied with Shen Que's answer, but instantly felt displeased when he called himself a dog.
How could someone so handsome be compared to a dog!
But seeing Shen Que gently bandaging the white wolf's wounds, alarm bells started ringing.
Oh my god, could white wolf be in danger?!
Better keep Shen Que away from white wolf from now on.
What if Shen Que genuinely develops feelings for dogs?!
Then he might not find a dog and end up substituting the white wolf instead.
"Shen Que, your thoughts are dangerous!" Meng Ci blurted out.
Hearing this, Shen Que looked utterly confused, unsure what Meng Ci meant.
Meng Ci didn't explain, instead mentally revisiting a beastman novel he'd read earlier.
If Shen Que knew all these bizarre ideas of Meng Ci's came from fiction, he'd probably snatch his phone and delete every single novel.
Shen Que had studied bone setting before. After treating the white wolf's wounds, he stuffed a wooden stick into its mouth and began adjusting its bones.
"Ugh!"
Then Meng Ci watched as the previously expressionless white wolf suddenly stiffened its limbs, its eyes widening into round orbs.
Meng Ci gave Shen Que a thumbs-up, surprised this guy even knew bone-setting.
Shen Que had Meng Ci hold the white wolf's leg while he turned to chop two pieces of wood with his axe, securing them with rope. Next, Shen Que reached for cotton swabs to treat the wolf's wounds. But the moment Shen Que approached, the wolf, though unable to stand, strained to move away.
Meng Ci quickly snatched the cotton swabs from Shen Que's hand and soothed the wolf.
"It's okay, it's okay. It just doesn't understand you're doing this for its own good."
"Once its leg heals, it'll thank you."
Shen Que handed the alcohol bottle to Meng Ci with a cold snort.
"Not necessary."
He then rose and sat on the sofa.
Meng Ci removed the wood from the wolf's mouth. Spotting the pot on the stove filled with chunks of braised pork, he scooped a piece and fed it to the wolf.
"There, there. Eating something will make it feel better!"
The white wolf's eyes lit up at the taste of meat. It gobbled it down, even licking up the crumbs that fell to the floor, then looked expectantly at Meng Ci.
Meng Ci picked up two more pieces.
Recalling the fish he'd salvaged from outside and stored in his spatial pocket, Meng Ci felt relieved he hadn't discarded them-now he could secretly feed them to the white wolf.
This wolf might have already eaten human flesh before. He just hoped it had enough conscience not to devour him.
Shen Que sat on the sofa and spoke up, "In the late stages of the apocalypse, many plants and animals mutate."
"I just examined it-this wolf shows signs of acid rain
corrosion. We can feed it."
"By the late apocalypse, it might even protect you."
When encountering the white wolf, Shen Que had considered this possibility, which is why he returned to help Meng Ci restrain
it.
"Mhm." Meng Ci nodded.
After treating the wolf's wounds, Meng Cl moved it closer to the
stove.
The rabbits he had previously kept in a pen had grown larger. The cardboard walls could no longer contain them, and they had chewed a hole in one corner. Now they escaped whenever they could.
Meng Ci paid them no mind.
Just then, a small rabbit darted out. It eyed the white wolf from a distance. Having likely never seen such a massive creature before, it approached cautiously, inch by inch.
The white wolf's eyes locked onto the little rabbit. Meng Ci could even hear the wolf swallow.
Instantly alert, Meng Ci scooped the rabbit off the ground.
"White Wolf, you can't eat this rabbit!"
"If you do, watch out-I'll stew you next."
Woof!
The wolf let out a couple of howls, its eyes still gleaming at the sight of the little rabbit.
Placing the rabbit inside the cardboard box, Meng Ci patched up the hole.
The two large rabbits were huddled inside the iron cage. These few little rabbits were too small; they could squeeze through the gaps.
Meng Ci began planning in his head whether to build a new enclosure for the rabbits.
Shen Que suggested, "How about we build a wooden enclosure?"
"Alright." Meng Ci agreed.
They chose a corner of the wall and got to work.
First, they nailed two wooden planks to the wall. Then they tightly bound a roughly 80-centimeter wooden pole with rope and secured it to the planks.
Meng Ci tested it-it felt sturdy enough-and started moving the rabbits into their new home.
"You're not allowed to escape again this time, got it?"
"If you fall into the wolf's mouth, I can't do anything about it."
While cooking, Meng Ci placed two clay pots on the stove to steam rice. For dishes, he prepared braised pork and vegetables from Shen Que's spatial storage.
Braised eggplant, vinegar-tossed cabbage.
He found a bowl, mixed food for the white wolf, and placed it by its mouth.
The wolf had shifted from lying on its side to lying flat on the ground. Spotting the food in the bowl, it began eating without even lifting its head.
Meng Ci had heard before that cats and dogs shouldn't eat salt-too much could cause hair loss. But in the apocalypse, who had time for such concerns?
Shen Que also brought out a six-pack of beer. Meng Ci wasn't much of a drinker, but the aroma tempted him to ask Shen Que to pour him half a glass.
"Here, Shen Que, let's drink up!"
"To celebrate our new companion!"
"Right!"
