Chapter 31 - Chapter 30:What We Become

Chapter 30: What We Become

(Jay-jay's POV)

I should've walked away after that.

After the way he kissed me.

After the way I kissed him back.

After the way neither of us even tried to pretend it didn't mean something more.

But I didn't move.

And neither did he.

The hallway felt smaller now.

Like it was closing in around us.

Or maybe—

We were just too close to notice anything else.

Keifer's hand was still on my waist.

Not as tight as before.

But not gone either.

Like he didn't trust the space between us.

Like if he let go—

I would disappear.

Jay-jay: "…you're doing it again."

Keifer: "What?"

Jay-jay: "Holding on like I'll leave."

A pause.

Then—

Keifer: "You might."

I didn't answer immediately.

Because that wasn't wrong.

But it wasn't right either.

Jay-jay: "…not like that."

Keifer's eyes didn't leave mine.

Keifer: "Then how?"

Jay-jay: "…slowly."

That word hung between us.

Heavy.

Honest.

Dangerous.

(Keifer's POV)

Slow.

She said it like a warning.

Like something I should be afraid of.

But I wasn't.

Because slow meant she was still here.

Still choosing to stay.

Even if she didn't say it directly.

Keifer: "I'll take slow."

Jay-jay: "…you don't have a choice."

Keifer: "I do."

Jay-jay: "…and?"

Keifer: "I'd still choose you."

She exhaled.

Soft.

Almost like she was tired of fighting something she couldn't control anymore.

(Jay-jay's POV)

He says things like that so easily.

Like they don't shake everything.

Like they don't make it harder to think straight.

Jay-jay: "…you're not supposed to make this easy."

Keifer: "I'm not."

Jay-jay: "…then why does it feel like it?"

Keifer: "Because you want it to be."

Silence.

Because—

Again—

He wasn't wrong.

From the end of the hallway—

Voices.

Louder this time.

Closer.

Felix: "THEY'RE DEFINITELY HERE!"

Calix: "I HEARD SOMETHING!"

Mayo: "CHECK EVERY CORNER!"

Kit: "THIS IS A MISSION!"

Blaster: "WE WILL FIND THEM!"

David: "…this is unnecessary."

I closed my eyes briefly.

Jay-jay: "…they're coming."

Keifer: "Let them."

Jay-jay: "…Keifer."

Keifer: "What?"

Jay-jay: "We can't keep doing this in hallways."

Keifer: "Why not?"

Jay-jay: "…because it's reckless."

Keifer: "You say that like you didn't just kiss me back."

I opened my eyes.

Jay-jay: "…you're very annoying."

Keifer: "You like it."

Jay-jay: "…I tolerate it."

Keifer: "Liar."

He stepped closer again.

There was no space left now.

None at all.

Keifer (low): "Say it again."

Jay-jay: "…say what?"

Keifer: "That you don't regret it."

I hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—

Jay-jay: "…I don't regret it."

His expression changed.

Not softer.

Not lighter.

Just… certain.

Keifer: "Good."

Jay-jay: "…that's all you're going to say?"

Keifer: "For now."

Jay-jay: "…you're impossible."

Keifer: "And you're still here."

Jay-jay: "You really need new lines."

Keifer: "No. You just need to stop proving me right."

I almost smiled.

Almost.

The voices got louder.

Closer.

Felix: "I HEAR THEM!"

Calix: "THEY'RE NEAR!"

Mayo: "THIS WAY!"

Kit: "MOVE!"

I pushed lightly against his chest.

Not to get away.

Just to create space.

Jay-jay: "…we should go."

Keifer didn't move.

Keifer: "In a second."

Jay-jay: "…now."

Keifer: "One second."

Before I could argue—

His hand moved from my waist to my wrist.

Gentle.

But steady.

He pulled me slightly closer again.

Jay-jay: "…Keifer—"

Keifer: "You said slow."

Jay-jay: "…this isn't slow."

Keifer: "It is for me."

My breath caught.

Again.

Keifer (quiet): "I'm not rushing you."

Jay-jay: "…you're not giving me space either."

Keifer: "You're still here."

Jay-jay: "…that's not the same thing."

Keifer: "It is for me."

I looked at him.

And for the first time—

I understood something clearly.

He wasn't holding on because he didn't trust me.

He was holding on because—

He finally let himself feel this.

And now—

He didn't know how to let go.

Jay-jay (soft): "…I'm not leaving."

That stopped him.

Completely.

Keifer: "…say that again."

Jay-jay: "I'm not leaving."

Silence.

Deep.

Real.

His grip softened.

Not gone.

But different.

Less afraid.

(Keifer's POV)

That was enough.

More than enough.

(Jay-jay's POV)

I stepped back.

This time—

He let me.

And that—

That mattered more than anything else.

Jay-jay: "…come on."

Keifer: "Where?"

Jay-jay: "Before they find us."

Keifer: "Too late."

We turned—

And there they were.

Section E.

All of them.

Standing there like they just discovered something illegal.

Felix: "FOUND YOU!"

Calix: "CAUGHT!"

Mayo: "RED HANDED!"

Kit: "VERY RED HANDED!"

Blaster: "EXTREMELY RED HANDED!"

Edrix: "Recording resumed."

Rory: "WHAT WERE YOU DOING?!"

Drew: "WE KNOW WHAT YOU WERE DOING!"

David: "…we all know."

I crossed my arms.

Trying to look unaffected.

Jay-jay: "…don't you all have something better to do?"

Felix: "NO!"

Calix: "THIS IS OUR PRIORITY!"

Mayo: "OUR MAIN STORYLINE!"

Kit: "OUR PURPOSE!"

I sighed.

Then glanced at Keifer.

Jay-jay: "…this is your fault."

Keifer: "How?"

Jay-jay: "You started it."

Keifer: "You didn't stop me."

The class screamed again.

Felix: "AGAIN WITH THAT LINE!"

Calix: "IT WORKS EVERY TIME!"

I shook my head.

But—

I didn't deny it.

End of Chapter

Some things don't need to be said out loud.

Some truths don't need to be confirmed.

Because they show—

In the way someone stays.

In the way someone doesn't let go—

Until they know they don't have to hold so tightly anymore.

And now—

They weren't just crossing lines.

They were rewriting them.

Together. ✨
