He set his book down on the table and gave her the full measure of his gaze.
Theodore still could not understand how someone as pretty as she was.
And the worst part was that she was hardly trying - there was no rouge on her cheeks or lips, strands of her hair clung to her face… but her eyes…
Those eyes.
They were the most lively eyes he had ever seen. And for someone like him, it looked like after everything he had been through, someone like him no longer deserved such happiness. It was simply… a waste.
What was she even saying…?
Something along the lines of him having a problem with that back-stabbing friend of hers, was it not?
"That would be a waste of my time. We simply have different values."
She blinked.
"But a man like you should be willing to put aside such differences, should you not?"
He scoffed inwardly.
Men like him could compromise anything but their values…
It was the only thing that kept him… from becoming a killing machine in the first place.
